NC State 74 SC State 49 (Updated Sunday)

SCSt

A lot of different guys played legitimate minutes for the Wolfpack today. State ‘advances’ to 5-3 despite shooting 2 of 16 from the three-point line and 18-30 from the free throw line.

Of note:
* Javi Gonzalez played more minutes than Farnold Degand
* Tracy Smith played double figure minutes (but went 0-4 from the free throw line).
* Simon Harris also played a lot in the first half (so, it wasn’t just mop-up minutes).

If you are a little concerned about the final score, note that State led 60-33 with almost thirteen minutes remaining when Gavin Grant and JJ Hickson were relegated to the bench for the rest of the game. We did not score another basket for approximately nine minutes.

More from ACCNow is available here.

State coach Sidney Lowe used more players, 10 in the first half, perhaps sending a message to incumbents like Courtney Fells who played only four minutes in the first half, that anyone unwilling to play defense or rebound will not be on the floor.

ACCNow also highlighted what we proposed as NC State’s most important key to having a good season after the first game of the year – outside shooting from the point guard position. (Obviously, we presumed that any college basketball team would be able to play adequate defense and rebound)

As we said before – the Wolfpack does not need a point guard to make 3 to 5 three pointers per game for us to succeed. What we need is for our point guard to simply hit the majority of 3-point attempts when they are WIDE – I mean WIDE – open.

Our offense – and the zone defenses that we will see because of the strength of our front court – will create two or three WIDE open looks for the point guard. It’s just that simple. Hitting those shots from the point guard position will ultimately create an inordinate impact on our performance.

The N&O expressed it as follows on Saturday:

Degand went three straight possessions without taking the shot, but finally stepped into the gap of the zone and knocked down the 3. If N.C. State is going to be better than the team that started 4-3, Degand, or Javier Gonzalez, has to be able to reprise Engin Atsur’s role at point guard.

That means one of the two, or Tennessee transfer Marques Johnson who’s eligible to play against Davidson on Dec. 21, has to be able to knock down an outside shot.

Clearly Hickson’s good enough to handle the inside portion of the equation, but even an undersized team like S.C. State had some degree of success in double-teaming him on Saturday.

The inside-out philosophy doesn’t work without the out.

    We still stink

  2. charger17 12/15/2007 at 3:35 PM #

    WE NEED A PG! ! ! ! !

  3. chilly water 12/15/2007 at 3:36 PM #

Its not the PG, Its the effort, and we ran out of it in the second half.

  4. charger17 12/15/2007 at 3:39 PM #

I really think the effort was there today. I just agree with JeremyH’s comment: we just don’t have the basketball IQ on the floor to provide leadership.

  5. redfred2 12/15/2007 at 3:39 PM #

Wow, 73 points, against SC State. This team is a dynamo.

  6. charger17 12/15/2007 at 3:41 PM #

Scored 5 points from 12:55 to roughly 4:25 in the second half.

  7. redfred2 12/15/2007 at 3:41 PM #

Correction, it was 74 points, the team is still a dynamo, and I still can’t type.

  8. RAWFS 12/15/2007 at 3:48 PM #

We need to be able to shoot the three with some accuracy, or we’ll see zone defenses all year.

Oh, for an Archie Miller type bombadier!

I thought Johnson was supposed to be eligible for todays game?

With that having been said…often times on a basketball team, leadership is one of the responsibilities of the point guard. The point guard is the man that brings the ball down the court and the way in which he does that either feeds energy to his team or takes it away. Degand doesn’t push the ball down court. He walks it. I’m not asking him to run top speed, outta control, I’m asking him to push the ball down court and if no easy baskets are available pull it out and run the offense.

One thing I was glad to hear was the use of Simon Harris and other players off the bench. I think they did help with the overall energy of the team by actually putting some effort and hustling like they appreciated the opportunity for some playing time.

I worry about this next game against Davidson. We will need to amp our energy level up and play that way for the entire game in order to win.

At this point I think…well…after the last game I considered changing my allegiance, but today…I may be able to admit that I am a wolfpack fan to others. I’m still not proud of it though.

    charger17,

So, to break it down even further, basically what you’re saying is that we have a dumb basketball team? But wait, how can that be? Almost all of these players were recruited Mr X’s & O’s himself.

I thought finals have to be over the semester to be officially over. They end Tuesday, so he should play Friday then unless he has to wait for the start of next semester.

  12. JimValvano 12/15/2007 at 3:51 PM #

ah…thanks RBCRowdy…I look forward to his addition

I AGREE!!! about walking the ball up the court. It sets the tone on the offensive end and we suffered enough of that crap with the former coach. Lowe said in the post game interview that this team could, and should, push the ball.

    Well Coach, we’re waiting.

  14. WestCoast 12/15/2007 at 3:56 PM #

A win is a win, sure.

But to shoot so poorly at the FT line is terrible. Most, if not all, of us played some hoops from the time we could spell basketball. And from that very moment, the coach made us shoot free throws in practice with the entire team watching. If we didn’t make them, the entire team ran suicides! What the hell is going on with shooting so poorly from the line guys? It does boil down to effort, and if you want to win bad enough you make the free throws and the plays with effort alone…not always talent.

the only person who looks to push the ball or wants to is Gavin Grant. Too bad we already know how well he plays pg or else we could have something else to hope for with great optimism. Also lets not crown MJ yet because last year we were praising the arrival of Tferg

But to shoot so poorly at the FT line is terrible.

Agreed, but after the extremely lackluster, ok ok piss poor, showing against EZU, Sid may have had these guys running a lot in the shorter practices, and that may have taken away the opportunity to shoot as many FT’s. Granted, if you lace up, you should be able to shoot FT’s PERIOD, but practicing them is still vital. Just a thought.

Someone wrote.. “60-33 good guys 12:43 left”

We did not score another basket until like 4 minutes left in the game..we did make 3 of 7 FTs during this period of time. Sid took JJ and GG out and I wondered who was going to score… as it turned out no one did.

I thought we played good defense and did a better job of rebounding for the most part. I think a great rebounding team would still kill us on the boards. we had better intensity in this game than the last two and we can only hope the guys got bored at the 12:43 mark and that is why we had the 8 minute basket drought.

It is a step in the right direction but we still have to play better.

Javi played pretty well but he threw 3-4 passes that he had no buisness doing. (2 TOs out of those).
    Simon hustled.
Fells got 2 fouls early and did not play much in the 1st. He was quite until about 2 mnutes left in the game and then he went off in those 2 minutes.

Not sure why JJ disappeared in the 2nd.

Ben and Costner played better..really the whole team did (save Fells).

“the only person who looks to push the ball or wants to is Gavin Grant.”

I’m thankful Grant, ill advised passes, turnovers and all!!! just like last season, if it wasn’t for Gavin Grant, this team wouldn’t need any opposition on the court, they would loose to the shotclock without any other opposing players on the court.

  19. PAPacker 12/15/2007 at 4:08 PM #

wow, 2-16 behind the arc against sc state. that’s the grimmest statistic for me. zone defenses here we come

  20. redfred2 12/15/2007 at 4:12 PM #

I think maybe they’re dwelling on the one in four offense during practice. The “one part” would be either JJ, or Gavin putting all of the pressure on the opposing defenses, and the “in four” part would be like, four thumbs, in four rectums.

  21. Stoner 12/15/2007 at 4:17 PM #

Team played well for about 30 minutes, but then thought the game was over.

Fortunately we had built a large enough lead up and we were playing a very outmanned team, that it didn’t seem to effect the outcome.

On a flip note about wanting to crush SCSU by 80 million points, or whatever, I have bad memories of Dean Smith, because during the 1992-1993 season he ran up the score to avenge himself against losing twice to the Gugs-lead NCSU squads the prior year.

I wish we didn’t fall asleep, after 30 minutes of elapsed in the game and weren’t out of it mentally, but I’m also glad Coach Lowe started going into his bench, by giving Tracy Smith and Simon Harris minutes, so we weren’t drying to run up the score.

I think going deeper into the bench and giving Javi extended mintues, probably also hurt our offensive efforts late in the second half.

What really stinks is not scoring 75 points and allowing the fans to get free washer fluid. Bah Humbug!

Hi, I am an anonymous cynic at the keyboard. I’m a State fan, so with the early body of work they have dispalyed combined with playing one of the most puetrid of opponents this side of Savannah State, I would have to conclude that no objective commentary could come forth following this contest. None. Go Pack!

I know, my wiper fluid is running low too…

Wish I could have listened/watched all of it but with some major exams coming up this week I couldn’t manage it. Glad to see our boys finally put forth together an effort on the offensive and defensive end, even if it only lasted 30 minutes, that’s 25 minutes longer than all year so far. Good to see Javi put in some good minutes against quality competition, and for the 5-10 minutes I did listen to it on the radio, I especially like what I’m seeing from him as far as pressure on the ball. It seems he was trying to get his hand on it for a steal on multiple possessions.

Only negative other than our perimeter shooting so far is Tracy’s inability to hit FT’s, I’m hoping it’s simply the pressure getting to him, because with experience he’ll regain his ability. He’s only taken 10-12 FT’s so far, but he’s currently shooting 10% from the charity stripe… which is far too low for him, since he does seem to have a nice soft touch on his shots.

I’ve got my student tickets for the Davidson game though, sitting pretty close to the court, so I’ll have a report for how Johnson plays when that comes up. I hope he can be our leader that we need badly.

I may be out of the loop on this but I didn’t see Trevor Ferguson on the bench today. Anyone know what that is about?
