If Arkansas was ready to go with JG for $2.2M — why not bring home the native son — BMFD. At this point — when people turn you down to stay at WF for $1.1 M per year — the embarassment factor is starting to set in, recruits are opting out, and the alumni donors are getting ticked. Look for a big money play for a big name.

I wonder if the Arkansas AD “Knows Football.” This is just too familiar.

I wonder if TV commentator Terry Bowden will fill the Steve Lavin role in this too-familiar scenario.

Beo, I guess that would be fitting since Frank Broyles is filling in for Jed as the AD who is a “football guy”.

The good news is that Jed was at least more efficient that Arkansas since he found a way to bungle up the search on his own while Arkansas has 2 ADs (Frank Broyles-retiring & Jeff Long-to be AD) botching up their search. I like efficiency…

Fringe, that just proves the fact it takes two men to foul things up as well as Fowler does all alone.

RAWFS (you know me as ‘1980) I also think this same media explosion contributes to the idea that ‘the season is over’ because we lose to a NO (like Jimmy V NEVER lost early to a mid-major, except like…every season!). Or that ‘we’re going to a bowl!’ because we get a spark and win a couple of games (my senior year we were 7-4 and won the ACC and DIDn’t go bowling, and you’re gonna tell me THIS team deserved it if it hadn’t laid an egg against UMd?!)

I also like to compare it to the MTV generation as well, everything in your personal life is a melodrama and everyone has to put their life on hold while YOU go through your little crisis because your feelings are hurt……..give me a break!

He isn’t your coach till David Glenn says he is.

^”‘the season is over’ because we lose to a NO (like Jimmy V NEVER lost early to a mid-major, except like…every season!).”

I keep hearing this and it is not even close to being true. In 10 years, V lost early at Loyola-Chicago, at Santa Barbara and at home to East Tenn. State in his last season. Where does this idea come from?

“Fringe, that just proves the fact it takes two men to foul things up as well as Fowler does all alone.”

Best quote I have seen in a long time.

^Some upset loses in the V era:
    81 Rice, 82 Chattanooga, 85 Loyola-Chicago, 86 Tampa, 87 Santa Barbara, 88 Murray State, 88 SMU, 89 ETSU
That’s where I get that idea.
But if you don’t want to believe it that’s A-OK with me.

“like Jimmy V NEVER lost early to a mid-major, except like…every season!)”

The key words in your orginal post are “early”, “mid-major” & “every season”. Chattanooga & Murray State were early in the NCAA tournament but hardly early in the season. Rice & SMU were in the same conference as Texas and hardly mid-majors. They were also terrific teams – we were underdogs in both games. And by-the-way, Valvano wasn’t within 500 miles of the Tampa game when it was played.

    ^Agreed on both counts^

I think we’re arguing over trivia here. Yes, there were some unexpected losses to small schools even under Valvano. It happened often enough and long ago that it certainly seemed like a regular occurrence. I remember well the Murray State loss and how shocked and angry I was about it when it happened. I also remember the Les Robinson/ETSU loss and how I was sure that Les would be the sort of coach that would lead NC State even further than Valvano did. The Tampa loss was a bummer too.

But the main point about those losses not spelling the end of the world or the end of the season are dead on, and that’s how I am choosing to look at our losses so far this season.

Ask yourself, were you thinking one minute about disappointments in the regular season last year when we were playing Duke? Or neck and neck with the Heels in the ACC Tourney finals? Nope, would be my guess.

I have faith in Coach Lowe and I think that he and his coaches will have this team working well down the stretch when it matters the most. I’d much rather have that than one that peaked in January, as it happened two seasons ago.

Thanks for the history lesson (but I imagine I’m older than you). Fine, fire Sid then!LOL. He lost early to a mid-major.
The fact remains that V lost some games along the way to people he shouldn’t have lost to, period, undeniable (and that list didn’t even include weak conference teams). My point is that if it were not for the internet and sports talk radio would anyone be having a cow over the loss? Probably not, we would have called it a fluke (which is what we did when V was here).

Arkansas made as many as three offers to Butch. Maybe even a 4th prior to going to Grobe. He was definitely their top candidate along with Tubberville, Bowden 3rd and Grobe 4th.

    Maybe Whit wants this job???

  17. RBCRowdy 12/06/2007 at 8:14 PM #

Moral of the story, good coaches wont touch good (not great) programs with unrealistic alumni/fan bases.

Big difference when Florida expects to win the SEC compared to Ole Miss expecting to win the SEC…

  18. VaWolf82 12/06/2007 at 8:45 PM #

That’s not the moral at all. If it were, there would be all sorts of jobs in FB and BB without coaches.

    GoldenChain Says:
“Nothing changes, Wake will still beat us every year.”

MAN, you gotta LOVE the plethora of positive energy oozing from this one!

    yeah, I said oozing.

  20. choppack1 12/06/2007 at 8:59 PM #

RBCRowdy – That ain’t the moral of the story.

Each situation is different. IMHO, Arkansas isn’t attractive to a guy like Grobe because it’s not a big enough step up from Wake Forest. It’s definitely a step up – but Grobe going there would be a risk. I do think that if he was allowed to bring his staff Grobe would have gone to Nebraska or Michigan – he may yet leave for a Tennessee, a West Viginia or Notre Dame or somewhere else. Did the expectations of Razorback fans weigh on his mind – I don’t know.

  21. RabidWolf 12/06/2007 at 9:05 PM #

choppack, I would respecfully disagree…I would have to say that ArKANSAS is, at best at this point in time, a lateral move (excepting the money). Besides they are in the SEC, and you only hear about the SEC when it includes an NCAA investigation. Who wants to be associated with a dirty conference?

  22. Primewolf 12/06/2007 at 9:06 PM #

It is hard not to like Grobe.

But I don’t like him. I don’t like the way his team holds while blocking. I don’t like how they chop occasionally. Wake does it better than any team I have seen. Every lineman on every play keeps his arms in front of him and latches on.

They have gotten better at it each year. Must be OL 101 at Wake.

But, heck, I wish we could hold that much and not get whistled for it. At State we would be called for holding every other play if we blocked like Wake does.

  23. RabidWolf 12/06/2007 at 9:16 PM #

At State, we get called for holding when we don’t, and called for “the business” whatever that is.

  24. RAWFS 12/06/2007 at 10:57 PM #

I would love to sit down with an accomplished referee and go through a Wake game film to see what they thought.

Does anyone know if the former NFL ref who sold insurance in Raleigh is still around. Memory fades, Red somebody or another.

Seriously, this would be an awesome project to get an independent and expert opinion.

Things look to be getting interesting in Florida where Butch Davis is concerned.

This is going to get really ugly, really soon.

Let’s just say that accredited journos read the boards like everyone else and you guys do too.
