(UPDATED 10:25pm) We Don’t Think This Was One Of Grant’s Four Predicted Losses: UNO 65, NC State 63

Video Highlights | Box Score | Recap | Photos

After watching both performances turned in by this year’s Wolfpack, it is already clear to me that we will be facing two primary challenges/hurdles that need to be overcome if we are going to have a successful 2007-2008 Basketball campaign:

(1) Effectively managing minutes, playing time, and egos.
(2) Outside shooting.

Neither of these items was unexpected heading into this season, but effects of both issues couldn’t be more obvious after two games.

The guard rotation of Farnold Degand, Dennis Horner, Javi Gonzalez, Courtney Fells and Trevor Ferguson simply MUST nail open three pointers when provided the opportunity. We aren’t suggesting that they need to be Terry Gannon out there…but, these guys will be provided anywhere between 4 and 10 WIDE OPEN jumpers per game and they simply MUST nail the attempt (for points AND to open the floor for our big men) if the Wolfpack expects to win 20+ games this season.

Tonight, this group shot 2 of 10 from behind the three point arc and Trevor Ferguson didin’t even attempt a shot in twelve minutes of playing time.

Speaking of Ferguson, after reviewing tonight’s game we (unfortunately) uncovered a phenomenon we now think is called the “Trevor Tremor” to describe the impact to the scoreboard that takes place when Ferguson is on the floor. Tonight, NC State was outscored 20-7 in the twelve minutes Ferguson was on the floor. (We only lost by two points).

(a) In the first half, Ferguson entered at the 14:44 mark with the Pack up 13-9; he exited the game with Pack down 13-16 with 9:32 remaining.

(b) In the second half, Ferguson entered the game with State ahead 41-33; he left with 8:17 remaining and State holding just 48-46 lead.

Coach Lowe needs to scrap this concept of a 10-man roster if we aren’t going to press &/or exert more effort on defense. What is the point of playing 10 men if the players don’t play hard enough to get tired when they are out there? Hell, you could play your 7 or 8 best players and have a much better opportunity of winning games if you aren’t playing a pressuring defense.

State’s bench of Gonzalez, Ferguson, McCauley, Smith and Horner scored only three points in 52 minutes of play! ‘The bench’ combined for 1 of 11 shooting from the field on offense; and whomever Ferguson was supposed to be guarding played with the confidence and offensive proficiency of Michael Jordan.

In short, the following contributed to tonight’s unexpected and unacceptable upset:

– Continued poor shooting from the outside (31.2% from the three point line)
– Lazy Defense
– Idiotic intentional foul
– No emotion
– Lack of intensity and focus
(a) just look at the free throw shooting of 52.6%
(b) we were OUT REBOUNDED by a team who fielded a significantly shorter player than us at EVERY position.

I think McCauley has a right to be upset about his lack of playing time. He proved last year he is a legit center / power forward in at this level of play.

If people want to throw 2004 Carolina analogies around, Marvin Williams, had a ton of talent but came off the bench.

Sometimes you don’t play your most talented players together because other line ups give you better chemistry.

I have a sinking feeling about this year being a real bust.

One thing that’d cure some of the problems, in a hurry, is hitting outside shots and better free throw shooting. We seem to get plenty of those but miss too high a percentage of them.

i agree with the poor shooting, but this game took a final turn at the Fells intentional foul.

    Absolutely bonehead play.

personally, i think/hope it was just a bad night. . . but, man, did they ever look like complete shit! Out of sync from the beginning to the end. We deserved to lose this game!

I think one of my pre-season posts said that finding someone to consistently nail 3 pointers would be the biggest thing we had to do to be successful this year. The line in college basketball MANDATES effective 3-pt shooting if you are to be a really good to great team. Fortunately, the ACC office didn’t think that those of us in Texas should be allowed to watch the game so I only had to suffer through the last few minutes of play-by-play on line. When you have really good post players you are going to get enough open threes that you don’t need a JJ Reddick quality shooter just a couple of effective jump shooters. I still think Costner is the best hope to fill that role. Grant & Fells have had plenty of time to show us their outside shooting abilities and haven’t impressed anyone yet.

I love how people are blaming the loss on McCauley’s attitude. The guy played 14 minutes. Costner was playing horribly (offensively and defensively), yet played 27 mins and Fells was not doing very well either and played 31. Didn’t look to me like Sid was playing the “hot” hand.

  6. Rick 11/19/2007 at 10:14 AM #

Wow that was an avoidable loss.
For the life of me I cannot figure out why we did not play zone. They could not shoot and they drove by us at will. We played right into their strengths. Bad coaching decision IMO.

Fells has to play better. He is so talented but he is simply a non factor or worse a negative factor. The one three pointer he hit was a horrible shot. Fouling a three point shooter for a four point play and then the intentional foul. He has is an upperclassman at this point and has to be a leader.

We need to pair down the subs. Go with a three man big man rotation of JJ, BC and Mac
Go with a three man wing rotation that does NOT include Fergie. Does he has compromising pics of coach or something?
And find the two best PGs and give it to them.

We just got outhustled by a team that wanted to win more than we did. That’s what should be disappointing Sid – not losing to a better team, but losing to a lesser team that wanted it more. Sadly, it takes losing to a supposed “cupcake” to wake a team up sometimes…

  8. packbackr04 11/19/2007 at 10:48 AM #

i agree, coahc K ususally doesnt play 10 players, even when he is stacked… we just need to play our 7 or 8 best palyers…. this rotation should never ever ever include Fergie. How do you justify putting him in the game? The team IS WORSE, much much worse when he is the floor.

  9. Rick 11/19/2007 at 10:50 AM #

And why is Mac playing so little? He has proven his abilities so I am confused by it.

  10. PamlicoPack 11/19/2007 at 11:28 AM #

Rider, on paper is a much better team than New Orleans…they have a senior Mid-Major All America center who will not be intimidated by JJ, so if the other four guys on the floor throw it into JJ and then stand around looking at each other, this team is going to be staring at a two game losing streak in November.

Regarding the reference to David Thompson, he had “no ego” as a freshman, I can assure you. He was very quiet, almost an introvert, off the court back then, or at least he was when he came over to my apartment once. Plus he didn’t get thrown into varsity bball either and played a season on the freshman team.

The problems can be corrected, the team has the talent, JJ is awsome, to much experimenting last night and not enough taking care of business.

Terrible thing to have to witness but I wouldn’t read to much into it.

  13. Trip 11/19/2007 at 12:43 PM #

I’m thankful that the issues that we’re facing now aren’t fatal, and can be corrected over time… well… maybe except for 3 pt shooting. Here’s hoping johnson’s funny jump shot works well…

  14. burnbarn 11/19/2007 at 12:53 PM #

We passed lazily around the perimeter last night
    We gave no ball pressure
We could not/did not stop the ball… they repeatedly attacked the basket and that called for shot blocking and that caused poor rebounding position hence giving up the offensive glass.
We were under 50% on FTs if you include the bonus on missed front ends. This is really where we lost the game and that is mental focus.
I think we can all agree the team did not bring the mental intensity save JJ, GG, FD and JG.
GG had a great game, but made a mistake at the worst possible time. Same goes for FD and CF. We must win at home with a 7 pt lead.

I hope coach can work through all this.

It sounds like we had similar problems to what we had in the W&M game – which can be boiled down to lack of chemistry/purpose on offense beyond JJ and a lack of intensity on defense. It’s just that this time, the ball bounced the wrong direction a couple of times, and we got put in a position to lose.

Just like I wasn’t too high after W&M, I don’t think we should overreact to this loss. Fact is, we should’ve put the game away when we were up by 11, and then we would be having a similar conversation to the post W&M discussion. Early losses happen, especially to younger teams that have a different mix of players than before. Adding JJ and a freshman point are significant changes to work through, so it’s not surprising that we would stumble a bit early.

We know that the individual parts are good – Ben, Brandon, Dennis, JJ, Gavin, Courtney. These guys have talent and will play hard. It’s up to Sid to assemble the parts so that they work together.

Regarding the question of Ben: Sometimes a player has a greater impact at the start of the game while some players function as well or better coming off the bench. It might be that Ben coming-off-the-bench just doesn’t work for this team. It’s not about the individual players’ abilities or work ethic, it’s more a matter of flow.

It might be that JJ could come in the game cold and immediately be the focus of the offense, based on his number of shots taken, while Ben gets lost in the shuffle coming off the bench. It could even be that the guards stop looking for the big guy when JJ leaves, because it’s their opportunity to do some of their own things.

Ben is not playing poorly. Rather, he is invisible in these first two games. The trick is how to get him involved, not how to get him to “play better.” I expect Sid to tinker with the line-up and rotation until he finds the right pattern to get the most out of everybody.

Ben is the guy who would “run through a wall for you.” I doubt seriously if he is exhibiting an attitude problem.

  16. Packster 11/19/2007 at 1:07 PM #

Okay….I think we are pretty much all in agreement on the problems. Let’s pick up the pieces and move on to the next opponent. Sid is paid a lot of bucks to see all these problems we are noticing. I’m sure he is working on it. The real test for Sid in the early season will be if he makes the right adjustments. A loss like this can be beneficial in the long term. The problems seem pretty obvious, and the good thing is that most of them seem very correctable. Go Pack!

  17. packgrad93 11/19/2007 at 1:30 PM #

How quickly things turn. This team will be fine. It’ll take time for the chemistry/PT issues to work themselves out. Trust the staff. I bet Grant is regreting opening his trap perdicting only 4 losses.
