UNC Preview

This preview is actually a compilation of several different previews. We’ll start with the perspective of the same UNC fan that we heard from earlier in the week.

UNC SCOUTING REPORT

Offense – Getting worse each week.

UNC has a below average run game and can’t seem to find a running back. About four different ones have been used this year, but it seems now that Johnny White and Anthony Elzy are getting most of the carries. White had a solid game against Maryland, and Elzy played well against Va. Tech and Miami, but neither does anything particularly well and should not scare the Pack. UNC usually runs the ball well for a drive or two a game, but can’t seem to sustain it for four quarters.

The passing game is average. TJ Yates has done fairly well at QB, though he has leveled off after a hot start. He throws a good deep ball, but also has a penchant for poor decisions and interceptions. Hakeem Nicks is a great receiver and is the number one target – he’s both a possession receiver and deep threat. Brandon Tate (WR/KR) is UNC’s best all-around athlete and the Heels will try to get him the ball via the pass and the run.

Defense – Getting better each week.

UNC plays a very conventional 4-3. The Heels don’t do much blitzing and play fairly straight up. The front four is the strength with a number of talented players, including seniors Hilee Taylor and Kentwan Balmer and freshman Marvin Austin. The run defense is solid, and the Heels held Maryland (a usually good rushing team) to 93 yards Saturday.

Durrell Mapp, a senior middle linebacker, is one of the ACCs leading tacklers, but the other linebackers have yet to standout. The secondary has two very good safeties in Tremaine Goddard and Deunta Williams, but the corners are young and somewhat unproven.

Special teams – The Heels are in great shape at kicker (Connor Barth has only missed 1 FG in his last 21 games), punter, and kick returns. The weakness has been kickoff return coverage, as the Heels have given up a number of backbreaking returns this year.

Bottom line – First team to 20 wins. I say neither team gets there but that State pulls out a 17-13 win.

CFN OUTLOOK

Hit this link and scroll down to the State-UNC preview.

What Will Happen: Now we see why NC State wanted Tom O’Brien. He has it going and continues the post-season march with a big victory thanks to timely offense and just enough D to get by.

CFN Prediction: NC State 28 … North Carolina 23… Line: NC State -3.5

Note that even though CFN lists the game as being on ESPNU, the ACC website has it on Raycom/Lincoln Financial.

BY THE NUMBERS

Proving that great minds think alike, Steven at Section Six compiled some total offensive and defensive numbers against the three common opponents (ECU, UVa, and Miami). Luckily for State fans, those three games represent the only ones worth remembering so far this year.

The bottom line is that there is very little difference in the numbers between State and UNC. From these three games, it looks like UNC’s offense is a little better and State’s defense is a little better.

MY TAKE

Though both teams have shown improvement over last year, neither team can afford to make more mistakes than their opponents and still win. I’m betting that the team that makes either the most mistakes or possibly the last mistake will lose.

I think alot of people looked at the Miami game for us and said “uh oh, the boog-a-boos are back (with silly mistakes) but i look at that game more as like…here was a game where we obviously weren’t firing on all cylinders and we still came away with a hard fought gritty W just like all the good teams in a year have to endure. It shows they don’t quit even when its not all working. I finished watching the game as a torrent and our D was amazing. The reason we didn’t have more sacks was because of what they did. Freeman did not attempt a single typical 5-7 step drop back pass…everything was either a 3 step drop or a rollout. That is entirely due to scouting Willie Young and what the Def.Line had done two weeks in a row prior. What i was gonna commen on though was how many tackles for Loss we had in that game…haven’t researched it but it was a ton. Which is what made the 300yd rushing effort odd…i bet on positive plays they must have had 400yds or close to it rushing.

    Ismael:
“We have a damn good D. Walker is gone but he was gone for alot of the UM game so whoever filled in for him did well.”

True, but then again you also said:

“Freeman did not attempt a single typical 5-7 step drop back pass…everything was either a 3 step drop or a rollout.”

So I don’t think we really got a good look at our defense without Walker. I think we’ll miss him, especially with Carolina’s talented receivers. Good news is, Yates seems to be a little timid when he drops back and with Willie Young and Demario Pressley in his face all day it should give our defensive backs a little help. I think Miguel Scott will have another good day along with the Morgan Brothers. To be honest, our linebackers are what really worry me the most, but they’ve played well during this 3 game streak.

Can’t wait to see the wolfpack play tomorrow!

    FrankManor,

I can’t see that anyone has answered your question about UNX.

I think UNX is a play on the word Eunuchs (men who have been castrated). Just my guess.

^ I just wrote the explanation of the unx, and was finishing up with “ts our own inside joke here.” So why share it? I deleted what I wrote. I won’t spill the beans. trust me FrankManor, there is nothing dirty or even nefarious about it.

I understand, Everett, and respect that.

My Pack fan neighbour informed me yesterday anyhow.

    haha, so there you go.
After I started to write it I realized it might not be mine to tell.

cWOhLFrPAiCKs, nice with the ‘chris’ intermingled in WOLFPACK. The reason i said that Freeman didn’t attempt a really typical drop back pass is because of how well the front 4 had played the 2 weeks prior and that’s how Miami’s coach’s scouted and wanted to play us which is exactly what you have to do. 12 sacks in two games. Miami also has a pretty good line, but either the DE or an LB was chasing Freeman all over the field.

When he did pass, it was covered pretty well. Morgan admitted that he blew the coverage on that TD bomb. What you want the Saftey to do is tackle and Leonard plays on special teams primarily because he’s a good tackler, and that’s why Archer has him in Walker’s spot, he’ll do fine.

  8. bTHEredterror 11/10/2007 at 3:51 AM #

I’ve got a feeling the Leonard ploy is to light a fire under Scott as much as it is to get him gametime. Scott will most certainly get some snaps, and if he plays well, Leonard can focus on Teams. The problem within the secondary was at cornerback (both starters replaced) as much as safety, so even though Walker will certainly be missed I don’t expect a return to the D we played the first half.
