UNC Preview

This preview is actually a compilation of several different previews. We’ll start with the perspective of the same UNC fan that we heard from earlier in the week.

UNC SCOUTING REPORT

Offense – Getting worse each week.

UNC has a below average run game and can’t seem to find a running back. About four different ones have been used this year, but it seems now that Johnny White and Anthony Elzy are getting most of the carries. White had a solid game against Maryland, and Elzy played well against Va. Tech and Miami, but neither does anything particularly well and should not scare the Pack. UNC usually runs the ball well for a drive or two a game, but can’t seem to sustain it for four quarters.

The passing game is average. TJ Yates has done fairly well at QB, though he has leveled off after a hot start. He throws a good deep ball, but also has a penchant for poor decisions and interceptions. Hakeem Nicks is a great receiver and is the number one target – he’s both a possession receiver and deep threat. Brandon Tate (WR/KR) is UNC’s best all-around athlete and the Heels will try to get him the ball via the pass and the run.

Defense – Getting better each week.

UNC plays a very conventional 4-3. The Heels don’t do much blitzing and play fairly straight up. The front four is the strength with a number of talented players, including seniors Hilee Taylor and Kentwan Balmer and freshman Marvin Austin. The run defense is solid, and the Heels held Maryland (a usually good rushing team) to 93 yards Saturday.

Durrell Mapp, a senior middle linebacker, is one of the ACCs leading tacklers, but the other linebackers have yet to standout. The secondary has two very good safeties in Tremaine Goddard and Deunta Williams, but the corners are young and somewhat unproven.

Special teams – The Heels are in great shape at kicker (Connor Barth has only missed 1 FG in his last 21 games), punter, and kick returns. The weakness has been kickoff return coverage, as the Heels have given up a number of backbreaking returns this year.

Bottom line – First team to 20 wins. I say neither team gets there but that State pulls out a 17-13 win.

CFN OUTLOOK

Hit this link and scroll down to the State-UNC preview.

What Will Happen: Now we see why NC State wanted Tom O’Brien. He has it going and continues the post-season march with a big victory thanks to timely offense and just enough D to get by.

CFN Prediction: NC State 28 … North Carolina 23… Line: NC State -3.5

Note that even though CFN lists the game as being on ESPNU, the ACC website has it on Raycom/Lincoln Financial.

BY THE NUMBERS

Proving that great minds think alike, Steven at Section Six compiled some total offensive and defensive numbers against the three common opponents (ECU, UVa, and Miami). Luckily for State fans, those three games represent the only ones worth remembering so far this year.

The bottom line is that there is very little difference in the numbers between State and UNC. From these three games, it looks like UNC’s offense is a little better and State’s defense is a little better.

MY TAKE

Though both teams have shown improvement over last year, neither team can afford to make more mistakes than their opponents and still win. I’m betting that the team that makes either the most mistakes or possibly the last mistake will lose.

To echo VaWolf82’s thoughts on mistakes, I think it comes down to line play. Both QB’s are prone to mistakes when under pressure; this leads to big giveaways in field position and on the scoreboard. Our improved pass rush and zone schemes, combined with a young, “gunslinger” QB for the ‘holes, equal a Wolfpack win.

Also worrisome is that we have historically played poorly at home against UNC…3-7 in our last 10 games with them at Carter Finley, and 7-12 against UNC all time at Carter-Finley. I realized recently that in over 30 years of following the Pack, I’ve never seen us beat UNC in Carter-Finley, and these numbers are the reason why. Missed the win in 2003 and the only other two in recent history are ’89 and ’91, when I was away in graduate school.

This one time history is not going to mean a thing, momentum will win the day.

    State 17-10

“I’m betting that the team that makes either the most mistakes or possibly the last mistake will lose.”

Way to go out on a limb and make a prediction… 🙂

  5. FrankManor 11/08/2007 at 5:17 PM #

FrankManor’s breakdown of the game on Saturday:

-establishing the run may be the biggest factor in determining the outcome of the game. The Pack did well containing the run since their bye week until playing Miami…Johnny White could have another hot start like last week, but is doubtful to play well for 4 quarters.

-the Pack will throw the ball lots–UNC has a strong front 7 and a very weak secondary. While the defense has improved yards-wise in the last month, the secondary is green (3 freshmen-4 in the nickel-and 1 jr) and easily exploited. Plus, Eugene’s no Brown or Baker and Davis has an 8 man rotation on the D-line. The play of the UNC secondary and Evans’ ability to elude the pass rush will be another key.

-Both teams have top notch players in two common areas: Kickers and Kick returners. UNC’s kick coverage has shown to be weak more often than State’s. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Blackman have a good day–maybe not a TD, but some large returns.

-In addition, the UNC WRs are the best position on the team–but Yates looked out of sorts against MD’s every down blitz last week. Getting time to throw to Tate and Nicks and Foster could balance out an erratic running game. If not, there will be few TDs to speak of for UNC.

-The primary reason why the Pack has won 3 straight is the dramatic shift in winning the TO battle…if they win that again, their confidence could carry them late in the game, where the Heels have only shown that they can pull it out once; 1-4 in close games is nothing for Butch to brag about.

In these areas, I see the Pack with the advantage:

    secondary
    O-line
home field advantage (drunk peckerwoods et al)

In these areas, I see the Tar Heels with the advantage:

    front 7
    WR
RB (more the rotation than the actual talent of the top guy–white? elzy?)

In these areas, I see a pretty even matchup:

    QB
    kicker
    TE
    Kick returners
    coaching

    My final assessment:

Evans gets sacked more, but Yates throws more picks.
State rushes for under 100 and someone unexpected will make a big play out of the backfield for the Heels. Hauschka will make a FG of 50+ yards. Hopefully there will be fewer than 5 penalties for each team. Ultimately, UNC’s emergent defense is the difference:

    Carolina–24
    State–17

Good luck to the Pack on Saturday for a well played game…

    flame away.

i reckon we can give the edge to the Pack by getting really drunken and loud in there… did someone say RED OUT? it should be a SEA OF RED!

Measured, thoughtful post, FrankManor. I disagree with some of your thoughts, but thank you. We strive for intelligent discourse on this forum, and it is always welcome and refreshing from opposing fans.

My two questions: 1) Will we get out-hussled (again) and 2) which tarheel will have his career best game against us this year?

  9. vtpackfan 11/08/2007 at 5:53 PM #

“Plus, Eugene’s no Brown or Baker…”

Your right Frank, I think he is better. Better a catching, better at blocking, better at decision making, is argueably the best fit player on the ball club.

In the UNC games I’ve watched this season (UVa, UM, WF), I have been impressed with the RB’s to a certain degree. The OL isn’t spledid, but they are a servicable, hard working group. If you look more closely I think you would see that there yards per carry isn’t that bad.

The problem, IMO, is this Shoop fella. He and Butch are infactuated with Yates and their corps of fribee catching dogs. The talk about having a running game has been mostly lip service so far. Maybe against States sometimes inconsistent run defense, Butchy just might try a running attack.

  10. noah 11/08/2007 at 6:21 PM #

I’m a little mystified as to where all of this optimism is coming from with the UNC fanbase. Is it just State-UNC week bullsh*t or are they really expecting to wipe the floor with us?

Currently, UNC has beaten three teams: James Madison, Miami and Maryland.

Currently, NC State has beaten four teams: Wofford, Miami, UVa and ECU.

So, in a comparison of common opponents, State has beaten a 1-AA team and Miami, plus two teams that UNC lost to. Neither team is exactly setting the world on fire. Neither team is loaded with NFL prospects. Neither team is one you’ll remember in 20 years, unless it’s just to recall a coach’s first squad.

I see State having a slight edge at the moment. It wouldn’t shock me to see UNC win. The teams are close enough in talent that it wouldn’t even qualify as an upset.

I just don’t see where all of the bravado is coming from.

I dont know if there are any other current students on this board – but there is a pep rally this evening at the free expression tunnel with Bar-B-Q. 7pm i think is the time. Lets show the coach and team how much this game means to us.

    ” (unless, of course, it’s just “State-UNC Week-So-I’m-Going-To-Act- Like-A-Douche” behavior)”

    Well….at least it’ll be clean, I guess.

Oh God. Who let Frank Manor in here? A Tarhole. He poses as a “nice” Tarhole, but a Tarhole nonetheless. I remember Frank from the old N&O forums before they changed them all and chased away 95% of the users, so I KNOW he’s a Tarhole.

I couldn’t be bothered to join and post on another team’s fan weblog, let alone UNX. That doesn’t stop ol’ Frank, even though none of us really want to read it. Reason 2,387,465 why I hate UNX.

  16. FrankManor 11/08/2007 at 7:31 PM #

good to see you too, gumby…you should join us on the new forum. Let me know and I’ll give you the web address; we’d be glad to have you.

Well done including two of the tired-ass schoolyard names…I get “tarholes”, but what the hell is “UNX”? University of No Xenon? University of Noisy Xylophones? University Near Xanadu? wha?

anyhow, thanks for your measured and insightful game analysis, and good luck Saturday to NC State (my preferred name for the school in Raleigh).

UNC will try to run, and they will try to throw deep. I expect they will have a little success. But they have all year and they end up kicking a lot of FGs. I expect that trend to continue. We will run a fair amount as well, and I’m not sold on their run D. They have had some struggles, especially late in games. Curtis Underwood will get some carries in this game, and I think Eugene will have another 150 yards of total offense. We will get to their QB a lot, and we will win the TO battle. Stone will have to be a factor in the middle of the field, and if he is we will feast on their corners. Expect Evans to have a nother 300 yard passing game, State will win 27-17.

  18. VaWolf82 11/08/2007 at 7:36 PM #

Evans’ ability to elude the pass rush will be another key.

I just don’t see how anyone would think that UNC’s DL is better than either UVA or Miami. State contained both of those lines and I’m not expecting extreme trouble in containing UNC’s….especially if the UNC scouting report was correct in that UNC doesn’t blitz alot.

Frankly, I’m more concerned about State’s offense self-destructing (again) than anything that I’ve seen so far from UNC.

  19. Trey 11/08/2007 at 7:43 PM #

What part of RED OUT does Frank Manor not understand?
37-3 only because TOB decides not to run up the score.

  20. bTHEredterror 11/08/2007 at 7:45 PM #

Frankly, I’m more concerned about State’s offense self-destructing (again) than anything that I’ve seen so far from UNC.

I share this concern, and recent history justifies it. Though I have seen the improvement in discipline we all expected from TOB in recent weeks.

State 35 UNC 13. Can’t wait to see the wolfpack dominate the tarholes. GO PACK!

  22. BJD95 11/08/2007 at 8:29 PM #

I like the Pack 20-16. Bend don’t break works again. Mike Archer is a genius. 🙂

  23. Primewolf 11/08/2007 at 8:30 PM #

EweNC will try to pound us with sweeps and power running. The Miami film would entice any team to try that. Plus, they powered us the past few years with the same type of plays and we strugged to stop it.

I suspect we will have a few new wrinkles defensively. I would expect more man coverage and more guys commited to blitz/ stop the run.

My fear is Daniel has been in the press so much this week, that he will have a bad game. Why?? He will have thought about it too much and won’t be relaxed.

But, he had a poor passing game in Miami (accuracy was not good even when he had time) and we won. First time that has happened in quite a while.

EweNC defense is clearly better than it was at the start of the season. Ours is too.

If turnovers are equal, with the lineplay being what it is on both teams, the QB that makes the best throws combined with receivers that make plays will determine the outcome.

A field goal will decide it. The problem is we don’t know which team will be kicking the winning goal.

    Tarheel is to Wolfpack

    as

    Falsehood is to Veracity

IMHO, our DL will be able to cause havoc in the passing game, forcing UNX into several bad throws, possibly INT’s. State players and fans will be more pumped up for this game than any other, and that will cause hell for UNX!! Especially if they get caught deep in their own territory in CF!!(ask FSU about that one).

Good point that I forgot to include. UNC is currently tied for 105th in the nation in sacks allowed.
