The N&O Is Pissed Off at Butch Davis’ Raise

For all the potential laughs that are there in this peculiar and outrageous tale of bad judgment in Chapel Hill, there’s very little that’s really funny about it. UNC-Chapel Hill presumably wants to be taken seriously, by its peers and its constituents. Contrary to what even some trustees are arguing, building a behemoth of an athletics program has very little to do with the standing of an academic institution in the places where standing counts.Quick: Anybody know how Harvard did in football this year? Yale? Princeton? Are their trustees spending tens of millions of dollars on football facilities? Paying coaches in seven figures? Panicked that if they don’t start winning big they won’t get a bowl game and TV revenue?

Highly doubtful. And, yes, it’s true that some top academic private and public institutions such as Stanford and Michigan and Notre Dame also have high-flying football programs. But there tends to be ebb and flow even then, and such cases are few and far between.

Taking off my “Wolfpack hat” for two seconds… it amazes me how the N&O doesn’t complain about all the papers its sells when the team is doing well. Doesn’t mind advertising and supporting the very sport they are heckling. Yeah.. Michigan and Notre Dame ebb and flow.. thats just stupid.. ebb and flow at Michigan is going undefeated or losing 3 games.
Gotta love the media bashing a school for spending money on a sport in order to generate more media coverage. ie: the tv revenue.
ok.. putting hat back on.. tarholes suck.

AND . . . this is also the same N&O that helped railroad the Duke soccer team without ANY basis of facts. Same old! Same old!

  3. StateFans 11/29/2007 at 12:22 PM #

^that isn’t true at all. If anything (after the first week) they led the fight to uncover the truth about Nifong.

At times it concerns me because it is true that this is the landscape of college football now…However, none of this outrage would have occurred (probably) if the man had a winning season or maybe even beaten some good teams.

In the end, this is a lot of fun and is supposedly affecting Davis’ commitment to UNC and causing him to look hard at that offer from the pigs.

The N&O EVENTUALLY came around to decent coverage of the Duke lacrosse scandal.

Beforehand, however, Ruth Sheehan was in her full “Anthony Grundy is a T-H-U-G thug!!!!11!” jump-off-the-deep-end righteous fury. Remember what she wrote? “Members of the Duke men’s lacrosse team: You know. We know you know.” She apologized — months and months later, well past when everyone with functioning brain cells knew what the real deal was.

And they also printed editorials by members of the Gang of 88 that basically blamed evil white America for creating the situation in which Rich White Drunken Athletes of Privilege could get away with Raping a Poor Black Woman Forced By Our Racist Society to Strip to Go to College.

The N&O may have cleaned up their act after the fact, which is better than what the Durham paper did and far better than what the Duke faculty idiots did, BUT they were just as insane and indeed racist as the rest of them from the beginning. I’m not going to congratulate them just for having barely enough sense to realize that their witchhunt was a failure.

I’ve read several items around the internet that have made fun of UNC for the raise and I have derived a great deal of joy from it.

I fear it will be us one day, though.

  7. LRM 11/29/2007 at 1:07 PM #

Will be?? We’re there, my friend.

As far as the media, it’s as much about the truth as the word “student” is in “student-athlete.”

On both accounts, it’s selling what people will buy; the business of entertainment.

Anyone remember when UCLA was courting Jim Valvano?

Can you imagine what the media furor would be now if those same events were to happen in this day and age of the 24 hour news cycle?

While I enjoy UNC schaudenfraude as much as the next guy, at the same time I can’t help but think that but for the grace of God there go we.

  9. JimValvano 11/29/2007 at 1:22 PM #

This is somewhat off topic, but does pertain in a way to Butch Davis. Michigan was granted permission to speak with Les Miles last night, but LSU says not until after their bowl game.

“And that his salary raise alone could hire more than two full-professors or perhaps 10 part-timers who typically do a lot of teaching. And that he makes more annually than the financial reward that comes with the Nobel Prize.”

yeah and the guy who invented the penis pump has more money than mother theresa. it’s supply and demand, we live in a friggin’ capitalist country, and get the eff over it.

“Ruth Sheehan was in her full “Anthony Grundy is a T-H-U-G thug!!!!11!” jump-off-the-deep-end righteous fury.”

Ruth isn’t so much righteous as she is more about men are evil and black men are worse than evil. How someone so sexist can make money as an opinion columnist today is beyond me. I guess it helps to explain why fewer and fewer people subscribe to that dribble anymore.

How someone so sexist can make money as an opinion columnist today is beyond me.

Because she was hired to fill the Angry Feminist opinion slot, just as Barry Slanders was hired to fill the Angry Black Racist opinion slot.

The fact that neither of them get in any trouble for being so famously wrong and personally destructive in some of their opinions shows that they are doing what they were hired to do.

  13. roandaddy 11/29/2007 at 1:29 PM #

umm.. JV.. you are close.. LSU said wait until after the CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP.. which is this weekend.

  14. JimValvano 11/29/2007 at 1:37 PM #

ah…maybe i heard what i expected to hear instead of what was actually said.

    thanks for the correction roandaddy

Actually controversy sells papers more than anything else. It’s a shame they diss their readership as much as they do (which curtails subscribing). They do show obvious bias in certain things often. For instance, they never favored the lottery and take every chance to air a story showing how bad it is, I mean it raises several hundred million for education and they say it’s a failure for being short of the goal. They also don’t get much of the advertising for the lottery so that probably ticks them off even more. This of course is a paper that shows the odds for sports games and the lottery picks for surrounding states for free.

There are few investigative reporters left. pat Stith used to do a good job but has blown it in his later years. Joe Neff is pretty good. Others just take what they are given and do lazy reporting. The opinion writers are predictable and boring.

THe Sports section has some good writers. I just think that rather than pissing off their readership — they could make the section a lot more intersting by devoting more time to interviews and infromative, objective, articles versus those that take a side. I don’t care about their personal bias because one can still write without being an obvious homer.

I guess it is becoming an annual tradition for Jim Jenkins to climb up on his soapbox (I like to imagine it built out of old articles from the N&O) every Fall to preach to the masses about the evilness and greed of the “booster boys” that are “running” the college institutions in the area.

In his article last year entitled “Small comfort in the ‘big time’,” it was Jim who painted the picture of UNC and NCSU officials running out two loyal alums from their respective schools in search of the “big time”. Let’s keep in mind that “his newspaper” (lovingly referred to as “you people”) produced NUMEROUS articles to chastise both of these coaches and routinely produced commentary to help fan the flames that eventually led to their dismissal.

    Link: http://www.newsobserver.com/opinion/jenkins/2006/story/515920.html

He was also the one who wrote an article back in 2003 entitled “Roy and Tater play hardball”, that was a parody about the “negotiations” of Baddour and Roy when he was hired as the UNC coach. It once again touches on the amount of money spent in coach’s salaries at major institutions. I wonder how many papers were bought during the month of April alone back in 2005 when UNC beat Illinois.

As pointed out above, the News and Observer receive a great deal of revenue from individuals buying the paper for the sports page alone. “Big Time” college sports generate a lot of revenue for a lot of folks.

I guess one thing you could say for Mr. Jenkins is that he is consistent (consistently hypocritical maybe), but consistent none-the-less. I hope he does not hurt himself stepping down off his high perch. I look forward his comments in 2008 when Butch gets another raise.

  19. Pack92 11/29/2007 at 2:48 PM #

Lunatic, unless they just decide not to the raise ‘ol butch-slap is going to get in 2008 will be paid from the U of A.

  20. Pack92 11/29/2007 at 3:38 PM #

^Nah, scratch that. U of A isn’t that stupid when they could pay Reggie Herring half what butch-slap would want. After all, according to the holes, the butch-slap is the second coming of Saban and should be paid accordingly.

“I mean it raises several hundred million for education and they say it’s a failure for being short of the goal.”

I’m pretty sure Wake County’s school budget is way into the billions so a few hundred million for the state is a failure. If gambling is good get the state out of it and let build us some casino’s and horse tracks. These two forms of gambling employee people not just line the pockets of politicians, lottery and school board officials.

You gotta love how they try and compare UNC with Yale and Harvard. Tantamount to me comparing myself with Einstein and Fermi. Maybe just a little reach.

  23. highstick 11/29/2007 at 5:50 PM #

Right on,btheredterror! I love it when I can say that my nephew turned down the “Robertson” scholly(to be a paranoid joint Duke and Carolina student) to go to Yale and will finish in May!!

  24. noah 11/29/2007 at 7:03 PM #

Harvard was, I believe, 8-2. Yale finished 9-1 after getting blown out in The Game.

And the N&O is right in its anger over the Davis contract and raise.
