The Fells Factor

There has been alot of talk about our dominant frontcourt (rebounds anyone?), our new point guards and all of the new players but this Wolfpack team can only go as far as Courtney Fells will take it. I know that is alot to put on one player but I have three reasons why I believe this:

1) We have no viable backup at this position. Ferg isn’t going to cut it and Horner cannot guard a shooting guard. So if Fells is having a bad game we have no one to replace him. Maybe Johnson can be his backup but right now there is no reason to think so.

2) He is our best backcourt defender. He is a shut down defender that sometimes makes some mental errors (cough)UNO intential foul(cough) but with his length and atheletic ability he has proven he can give good offensive players trouble.

3) When he shoots well we win. Since he became a starter NCSU has won 11 games when he shoots better than 50 percent from the floor while only losing 2. NCSU is 11 and 13 when he does not. Also, when Courtney scores more than 13 points NCSU has a record of 10 and 2. The wolfpack is 7 and 1 when he both scores more than 13 and shoots better than 50 percent. (Note: there are a few games with missing box scores and thus are not a part of this analysis)

So watch his play against Michigan State tomorrow night. It is the key to an NCSU victory.

couldn’t Grant fill in for Fells at the 2 guard for defensive purposes, and Horner could play the 3 for offensive purposes…

I think part of the reason isn’t more consistent offensively is because he doesn’t have a great handle. As a result, he won’t be able to create his own shot alot – so he’s dependent on folks to get him the ball at the right place at the right time.

He really has a solid mid-range game too.

I think he’s developing into a good defender. He uses his length wisely. I would also tell you that being your team’s defensive stopper rarely equates into being consistent offensively. It’s really hard to do both exceptionally while chasing guards or wings since they move around so much.

A little off-topic here, but Vitale and his co-anchor just spent some time talking about NC State and JJ Hickson during the Duke/Wisconsin game.

How’s that for a turnaround? How often have we had to hear Vitale gab about Duke during the middle of a State game?

I guarantee you that if/when Sid turns us into a power, he’ll talk about NC State and Sidney constantly in glowing terms. He’s not an evil guy. He’s one of the more approachable “famous” people I’ve ever had the pleasure of encountering

Beo– if I had an orgasm everytime Vitale talked about Duke during a state game, I’d be a very happy man… And in one thread I talked about Michael Flowers being a “premiere defender”… I stand corrected now; he’s obviously regressed (although he does have injury and/or personal issues now– he left the team for a few months).

Just wait till the first ice storm blows through Raleigh in early January (week of the UNC game is my guess). Fells is most certainly due for one of those classic NC State “high ankle sprains,” slipping and falling in the free expression tunnel en route to class.

  7. Dr. BadgerPack 11/28/2007 at 1:14 AM #

Slipping in the free expression tunnel is so not en vogue now… Fells will slip rolling a student in a wheelchair down the Harrelson ramp.

This is the reason that Fells became my favorite player last year, and still is my favorite player today.

Since no one can back him up, the only time he can get a break is the few minutes Lowe might go with Grant at the 2 and Horner/Costner at the 3. Despite that, he seems to give it all, just about every play, every game.

The team feeds off Fells. Whether it was his good defense, and great shooting sparking us to an 83-79 win over UNC, or a 69-68 win over Nova. When he hits his three’s, the only team that can beat us, is ourselves.

If Courtney plays like he did against Nova or UNC last year, we’ll have no troubles with MSU.

Ha, I used to sit on my skateboard and ride down the Harrilson ramp during winter break as a kid.

I had a student at Arizona who got to spend a lot of time with Vital and had nothing but just super things to say about him. He drives me just insane, but his uber-enthusiasm is there for pratically everything and everyone across the board. He’s a huge booster for high school kids – so despite his creepy love affair with Coach K, I’ve got a lot of respect for him.

So, I will watch Fells with extra attention tomorrow. thank goodness the wife will be home for the game so I won’t have to try and single parent my way through the game. My daughter is not into sports . . . yet. Its always competing with Hanna Montana.

Would we be having this conversation if we had lost to nova?

Interesting variation on my posts about the importance of 3-pt shooting for this team.

The reason Fells doesn’t take defenders to the hole off of the dribble is because he is a well below average ball handler. If he can improve that part of his game he can be an All-ACC caliber player if he plays more consistently.

Grant is the only back up option at the two right now.

Completely agree with points 1 and 2 of the entry. The easiest way to show he is the most indispensable is by playing time. Fells is averaging 34.2 minutes per game this year, easily tops on the team with Degand at 30.8 and Grant at 30.4.

In point 3, I do question using last year’s wins and losses in making this case. We have a very different team this year and I think we have a much better chance of finding a way to win if any player has a sub par performance. So far, we are 1 win and 1 loss in games Fells shot under 50%. Fells had a terrible shooting game against South Carolina (1 – 7 overall and 0 – 4 from the 3 point line) but we found a way to pull it out. I doubt last year’s team could have overcome this performance. This will be an interesting stat to follow this year.

“couldn’t Grant fill in for Fells at the 2 guard for defensive purposes, and Horner could play the 3 for offensive purposes…”

It really does not matter “their positions” when the opposing team is using a 3-guard set and so far each team we have played has implemented a 3-guard set at some point during the course of the game.

It means that Horner is going to be guarding someone that is 5 to 7 inches shorter than him & much faster. The good news is that the match-up zone has helped some on the defensive end, but it does not help us on the offensive end. We are going to have Grant & Horner guarded by faster players often times being in a full court press.

Horner/Grant have done an OK job playing out of position. I think the experience over the past couple weeks will only make those guys better. I went into the SC and Nova games expecting those games to be ugly since we would have bigger guys guarding guards so the performances were not really that surprising.

The good news about Michigan State is they tend to be more traditional 2G, 2F, & C since Izzo preaches rebounding they like to have the size; however, I would not be surprised to see a 3-guard set from them as well since they have several talented guards on the bench.

The better news is that we have another guard (Johnson) becoming available in a couple weeks so it may help to sort out this problem. It would have been really nice to have Johnny Thomas as an option the last couple weeks.

I thought Fells did an excellent job defensively this past weekend. I was extremely disappointed in his performance after the NO game (the whole game not just the intentional foul), but he showed a lot more drive and hustle in the past 3 games.

Sid has already stated that Fells will be guarding the “toughest guy” during the upcoming Michigan State game. I am glad the Fells is stepping up to the challenge, because I think he has all the tools to be a force of defense.

PackPride has some very good comments from Sid for the upcoming Michigan State game.

Fells is a streaky shooter. It seems like it’s very important for him to hit his first shot, although there is no way to verify this that I know of.

However, whenever his first shot goes down, it seems like he is in for a big game.

I hope he drains a 3 on the first play tonight.

  16. packgrad93 11/28/2007 at 1:52 PM #

Fells is very important. He is the team’s best on-the-ball defender & doesn’t have a great back-up. We can still win even if he doesn’t shoot well. We have plenty of options that can score.

  17. wolfbuff 11/28/2007 at 2:18 PM #

I like that Fells is becoming a leader. Don’t know if anyone noticed or not, but during the Villanova game, after JJ got tied up by holding the ball behind his head, Fells took the ball and showed him how to hold and protect the ball during a double-team. It was a real quick camera glance, but spoke volumes to me about his mentoring and the team’s chemistry getting better.

    Great points…

Fells is the only player we have who is anywhere close to that all important “get hot and kill you” shooter that all of the best teams seem to have…the “dagger guy”…

Hopefully, Sid will add some “dagger” recruits in the future…We may never see the 2nd coming of Rodney Monroe but even a CC Harrison level talent would make this team extra special…

  19. Rick 11/29/2007 at 1:21 PM #

Someone asked so I looked. There is no correlation between the number of shots Fells takes and our success.

BTW, he scored no points last night.
