Share StateFans Nation’s Articles Across The Net!

You’ve probably noticed a new set of icons across the bottom of each article, and many of you probably already recognize them — they’re shortcuts to add the article to aggregation sites like Digg.com, del.icio.us, StumbleUpon.com and a couple of others. In short, it’s a way to share something you like across the Internet at large, so please feel free to do so if you are so inclined.

By the way, on a non-sports note, I found this incredible Full Screen Flash Video on StumbleUpon tonight when I was testing the interfaces. Imagine Wolfpack highlights produced in that format!

While you are talking about new features, any chance you could add author information to each article page?

I only use the RSS feed so I never look at the main page, so it would be nice know know who posted the entry as well as what time they did it.

You almost might want to check the date your server — it doesn’t seem to know about daylight savings time. 🙂

  2. backinpack 11/14/2007 at 1:19 AM #

…or the server is in some other country/state where they don’t do daylight savings, but split the difference by being 1/2 hour off since I’m posting this at 11:45pm EST.

Men’s soccer season comes to a close after losing the play-in game in the ACC tournament. Team finishes 6-9-3 with a single ACC victory and 1 tie in the conference.

The server is located in Las Vegas, and is set to PST. I know that that is a little wierd for a site oriented towards EST, and it is something that will be fixed when some bigger fish are fried.

Last night, for example, I had to do a complete migration of RAWFS off of its old platform because of some technical issues that were causing me a lack of sleep dealing with developers that have effectively abandoned the platform. Anyway, if you have ever scripted a database dump/remap/import cycle, you might have an idea of what I was up against — eight hours of work for fifteen minutes of whoop-tee-doo. But it all worked and it looked easy.

Next, we’re moving RAWFS and SFN over to a new server that has some major horsepower. Think of this server as last year’s basketball team and the new one as this year’s edition and you get the idea of the value of the upgrade.

And then some other little enhancements that the guys here aren’t quite ready to announce, but rest assured that SFN is only going to consolidate itself as possibly THE premiere single-team blog out there.

So hang on. We’re going to to do the big things and then the little ones and I’ve put the clock synch daemon on the to-do list.

    Rgds,
    Alpha

^so now you have three point guards instead of one point guard with a bad hammy?

“but rest assured that SFN is only going to consolidate itself as possibly THE premiere single-team blog out there.”

Possibly? – i think that was accomplished long ago without the slick looking update – but what ever it takes to stay on top.

Alpha, Thanks for the feedback. Any thought on adding a listing of the author to each article so it’s not just on the front page?

  8. RAWFS 11/14/2007 at 12:28 PM #

Otis, you’re right, but keep in mind it’s always a moving target from a technical standpoint. As far as the writing goes, I’ve not seen a site anywhere that generates as much high quality original content, and I read a lot of blogs. They’re bona fide, to use a phrase from one of my favorite movies, “O Brother Where Art Thou?”

Thing is, there are some other areas of NC State sports that SFN can explore and excel within too.

It’d be nice too that when you do wolfpack highlights if you could actually get the BBC film crews to cover NC State games, now that would be sick. They are the best video crews in the world.

backinpack, as I told the guys that actually own the site, we’re planning on tackling the backend stuff like the server move and then take on the front-end like the site style and formatting.

I know that that is less than exciting to you guys, but at the same time, there’s an incredible load on the server — especially before and after big games, a spam war constantly being fought in the background, and security issues that are always there as well. That’s what makes the server move over the next week or so incredibly important. SFN and RAWFS both were down for a couple of hours after the ECU, UVA and Miami wins because the server was running at 99.7% of its CPU power and 190% memory due to all of the database calls. (100% physical and 90% virtual memory) — and the box itself is no little ole retired Pentium 4.

Once that’s done, and we’re close, we’re going to update the look of the site, improve the RSS, and then add the new gee-gaws.

Alpha, Sounds good. Thanks for the update.

Feel free to email me at the address in my profile if you want — depending on how much you are spending there could be some good options to handle short term spikes in traffic that are quite cost effective (and no I’m not a sales-person and trying to sell you some crap).

    RAWFS and the SFN owners:
Thanks to all of you for the efforts to continue keeping SFN and Red and White from State in the forefront.
When it comes to NCSU athletics info there are two places I look SFN and Red and White from State.
    Gentlemen excellent work!

No, it goes thestruttinwolf.com, SFN, RAWFS

    (shameless promotion)

So, if the current server is like last years team and the new one is this years, do you have a 3 year old server.

You know, the one with the interchangeable parts? There is nothing like trying to fit a CPU into the memory bays.

RAWFS, new site looks great! I’m glad your header is finally legible 😀

Don’t know what I would do without you folks. There’s not much I can do except cheer you on from the sidelines, but I’ll do that loudly and often.

    THANK YOU!
