NC State 94 Barton 57: ‘More help has arrived’

You couldn’t tell it by his 22-point performance, but Brandon Costner experienced a rare kind of cold spell Thursday night at the RBC Center. It came in stretches when he was sitting on the bench during N.C. State’s 94-57 exhibition victory over Barton, the defending NCAA Division II men’s basketball champion.

“I felt myself getting cold, like I needed to put a heating pad on to warm back up,” said Costner, who played 25 of the 40 minutes. “I didn’t [feel] that last year.”

Chill. Coach Sidney Lowe said State’s starters — each of whom logged more than 33 minutes a year ago — need to get use to playing fewer minutes this season.

More help has arrived

There are plenty of links out there for you to surf if you want more.

A few comments:

* GoPack: ‘Five Wolfpack players hit double figures on the night, led by sophomore forward Brandon Costner, who scored 17 of his game-high 22 points in the first half. Junior Courtney Fells followed with 16 points, while senior Gavin Grant had 14 and freshmen J.J. Hickson and Tracy Smith had 11 each. Fells led the team with seven rebounds, and Costner added six.’

* Costner was…Costner

* Degand turned in the kind of line that will win State a lot of games this year. Pack Pride: “The quick point guard finished up with eight points, six assists, two rebounds, two blocked shots and a steal, with just two turnovers, in 28 minutes. Degand drilled all six of his free-throw attempts, in addition to showcasing impressive speed that will occasionally need to be slowed down.”

* Courtney Fells’ statistics looked more like a Gavin Grant line as he logged 7 rebounds along with some blocked shots, 2 assists and 3 steals in route to scoring 16 points.

* JJ Hickson rushed things in the first half but settled down in the second. N&O: “J.J. Hickson, the McDonald’s All-American, also contributed 11 points, plus five rebounds and three steals. He is big, strong, physically mature and eager to shine. At times he rushed offensively. But that’s a correctable flaw for the player counted on to spell Ben McCauley in the post.”

* Tracy Smith is about an inch or so shorter than I expected. But, he was composed and scored nine points in the first half. N&O: “Freshman Tracy Smith looked smooth and composed coming off the bench, scoring 11 points in 11 minutes, and said “this gives me a lot of confidence.”

* A look at the box score reveals a nice distribution of minutes. In regular season games I expect Hickson’s minutes to increas, Ferguson’s minutes to be 100% replaced by Javi Gonzalez, and then some game by game adjustments based on match-up advantages and who has the hot hand on the evening. You may see Fells and Grant log just a few less minutes each due to line-up shifts where Costner is moved to the wing to make room for Hickson (and even Smith).

* The same idiots on the “Idiot Boards” who thought that Trevor Ferguson was going to help the Pack last season are perplexed at why Simon Harris didn’t play more last night. Really? Who do you want to bench, Einsteins? There are only 120 minutes to split amongst Gavin Grant, Brandon Costner, Tracy Smith, Dennis Horner and JJ Hickson in the front court. Do explain how you would manage this situation other than petitioning the NCAA to add a sixth player on the court.

* For more on the rotation GoPack gives us the following: “Lowe was particularly impressed with the way Degand, a sophomore transfer from Iowa State who sat out all of last season, handled the offense, dishing out six assists with only two turnovers in 28 minutes of play. When Degand was out of the game, the Wolfpack relied on Fells and Grant to bring the ball up the court, which will likely be the case until injured freshman Javi Gonzalez recovers from the torn ligaments in his thumb that will likely keep him out until mid-November.”

As for the Wolfpack’s weaknesses –

* State needs to exercise much more dominance in rebounding when playing such a smaller team. If you remember, the Pack was not a great rebounding team last year, but improved dramatically by year end. I think that rebounding will naturally improve the more minutes that JJ Hickson logs.

* Coach Lowe commented on State’s inability to stop Barton’s dribble penetration. There is NO DOUBT that the Wolfpack’s biggest deficiency last year was defense; and therefore defense represents the biggest opportunity for improvement. Degand and Javi Gonzalez have the athletic ability to help control the opposing point guard’s dribble penetration. Our wings have to get better at mixing their athleticism with their height advantage on defense.

Duke reminds me of recent vintage NCSU teams. Good perimeter players, great fundamentals, but a lack of post play and over-reliance on 3-point shooting limit how far they can go. A cold shooting night against strong inside teams like State and the ‘holes will be too much to overcome.

It was clear that the team was working from an updated playbook. It was really nice to see how well they executed (most of the time) dishing it inside on slow sets and with speed. It was also good to see how well the ball was (most of the time it was needed) dished back out to the perimeter for a shot. There were some troubles finishing (JJ early) and with offensive rebounding but not terribly so. A little more individual development and the playing experience that leads to team cohesion should bring the show together.

I thought Degand had a pretty good handle despite the tendency to overrun himself on occasion. Barton’s #2 was pretty pesky and he dealt with it well. Good energy on D also.

It really looked to me like Fells has arrived. He was active in getting rebounds and getting open on the perimeter.

Big Ben is just the definition of poise out there. So confident and able. Such good passing ability from the post or the pivot. He’ll bring the calm and stability this year. Everybody’s talking about JJ, but let’s not forget Ben.

Horner also impressed. He seemed more confident and played well and hard without seeming out of control. Smooth stroke.

It’s nice to know that we’ve got such good depth inside. JJ, Smith _and_ Harris added to last year’s personnel. Not only can we keep our big men from getting too winded in any one game, and not run down over a 3-4 games in 3-4 days stretch, but we’ll also have a lot of fouls to give when needed and options in late game and OT situations.

The way Harris moves and handles himself he reminds me of a two to three sizes larger Jamon Gordon.

Why does everyone seem to think the only way to attack a zone is to shoot threes?
Dribble penetration and posting your big man just inside the foul line, especially if he is a good passer, are very effective ways of dealign with a zone.

I don’t know, maybe I’m not an educated watcher, but I think they looked a little lackadaisical on offense at times, with Lowe gesturing frantically from the sidelines to get them doing whatever they were supposed to be doing. I think that is a function of the opponent…I think the intensity will be there when they play a higher level opponent.

As others have noted, the defense was a little hit or miss at times, but when we did play intensely, we usually got a nice offensive fast break opportunity out of it at the other end.

We are just going to destroy traditional half court offense teams this year…and those without PGs who can penetrate and create (sort of like us last year).
I notice Duke scored well over 100 last night…I’ve always admired K’s ability to get an intense effort out of his team, no matter the level of the opponent…it is not a characteristic State teams under both Sid and Herb have shared.

Simon may see a couple games where he gets significant minutes due to situational match-ups, foul trouble, a shake-up in the roster if we come out flat, or the dreaded ‘I’ word that has plagued us through-out our football season, but to expect more than that is a bit crazy.

Simon’s real contribution will be the effort he provides during practice to help make the team better. It sounds like Simon is a smart player who plays really hard & there MAY be a game or two where his effort will potentially be an x-factor in a game, but unlike last year’s situation with Neiman…anything he provides is a luxury NOT a necessity.

I really would like to see Simon have one of those games where he is simply lights out especially against one of our fellow Tobacco Road rivals. We certainly have had enough guys come out of the woodwork against us over the past years during those games.

I really like the make-up of this team & guys like Simon who may not even get on the floor, but still works hard day in and out is one of the reasons.

“Don’t you know that it takes at least 5 or 6 years before you should expect to see any improvement?”

    who says?

“Why does everyone seem to think the only way to attack a zone is to shoot threes?”

    because it’s the most effective.

Shouldn’t we get the headline: NC State defeats defending National Champions!

Just a little suggestion going back to the App State victory last year.

The biggest Wow of all after reading all of the comments above is:

It appears to be 100% agreement that Degand did a very fine job and seems very capable of feeling the need and removing the question mark.

    NCSU #21 in AP poll

Shooting threes against a zone is effective only when you hit them.

However, if you don’t have a bona fide point guard who can penetrate the zone, then shooting threes could be your only option against a zone. Hope you have a center who can make them!

  11. packgrad93 11/02/2007 at 2:47 PM #

^ penetrate the zone then what? kick out for an open 3. A open 3 for D1 shooters is a good shot

  12. packbackr04 11/02/2007 at 2:59 PM #

nice beo^^ i had to read it twice before i caught that… “hope you have a center who can make them”
am i ever glad i dont have to watch our 6’10” players floating around the perimeter facing the basket…

i can see it now… last year at practice, Ben saying “but coach. hwsnbn told me to stand out here at the free throw line and face the basket?” and sid just looks at him and says” boy! get yo big ass under the basket and post somebody up!”

For what it’s worth, my observations from being at the game:

Overall – We will probably lose more than 4 games this year, but looked pretty good for this time of year. Barton played extremely hard the entire game and was a good test for that reason. They never quit playing. We had them overmatched at every position, so the offense was going to score. In spite of the assist numbers, I was not convinced that the offense was functioning as a cohesive machine. Maybe I’m just pessimistic.

Grant, Fells, Hickson, McCauley, Smith, Horner, and Costner all look like ACC starter-caliber players for any team.

Grant – You want glue, you got glue. He looked like the very good player we saw at the end of the year last year. Grant’s decision making has improved immensely. He seems a leader on the floor.

McCauley – May well lead the team in assists. Was not looking to score. He and Astur had something special in the high-low game. Did not see that element last night.

Smith – My biggest surprise. Very smooth with a nice touch around the basket. Seemed an efficient, reliable scorer. Not sure who to compare him to. Maybe a young Marcus Melvin because of his soft touch, but not really overall.

Hickson – No touch inside early, overshot the basket several times, then decided to start dunking the ball. That was quite effective. He looks like big-footed Charles Shackleford under the basket (or JR Reid if you prefer), but is slightly more powerful and much more agile. That means he was able to drive the basket from the wing and also make an incredibly graceful out-of-bounds save and mid-air pass to Grant at midcourt. It looked like a web gem from Baseball Tonight.

Costner – Looked like late last year. Still has it from 3-point land. Fairly quiet. Goes about his business leading the team in scoring.

Fells – Looked much more comfortable in his role as just one piece of a larger whole. Doesn’t take charge of the floor like Grant will. I think having the extra firepower around him will take the pressure off Fells and improve his game. Shot looked pretty sweet.

Horner – Just a solid player with a diverse arsenal of skills, good ball handler, got a dunk, nice shot, good nose for the ball, plays hard. Amazing to have a player of that caliber as a the 6th or 7th man. Will probably have a couple of great nights this year.

Degand – Was he bad? No. But I kept thinking about Lowe saying no-one had really seperated himself when he decided to recruit Javi. He didn’t seem like he was running the team. He didn’t make the players around him better, with just the right pass for example. Players didn’t look for him to run the break. He didn’t torment the other team’s PG. But, he is quick with the ball. He seemed confident and steady. He passed it to the other players and didn’t turn it over. Maybe that’s all we need.

  14. Rick 11/02/2007 at 3:04 PM #

    “because it’s the most effective.”

You are showing your ignorance. A team goes in a zone to force outside shots. It’s that whole moronic “take what the defense gives you” mentality. The defense gives that to you beause they know it is your weakness. So it is the height of stupidity to fall into their trap. Everytime you post I understand more and more your adoration of the sand walker.

I guarantee you will not see us hosting up threes (ala the weave and heave) everytime a team goes into a zone this year.

  15. Todd 11/02/2007 at 3:08 PM #

What’s all this talk about guards, forwards and centers??? I thought a team was made up of 5 guarwarders.

  16. VaWolf82 11/02/2007 at 3:14 PM #

or JR Reid if you prefer

    Surely you jest.

  17. packgrad93 11/02/2007 at 3:22 PM #

“The defense gives that to you beause they know it is your weakness. ”

the whole point is not to have ANY weaknesses. We should have enough 3pt shooters to make any team pay for playing too much zone. Pick you poision so to speak. Play zone, kill ’em outside, play man, kill ’em inside.

  18. Ismael 11/02/2007 at 3:25 PM #

Didn’t see the game…i’ll start off by saying…but don’t over-analyze these guys yet. It’s like the dumb houston texans fans who said Mario Williams is a bust because he didn’t have a sack in the first preseason game even though he played only about 10 minutes.

I do like the analysis of the veterans though and its nice to hear how they looked…if they look anything close to the way they looked the last 2 weeks of the season and into the ACC Tourny then look out world!. I think its gonna take some time for Degand/Johnson/Javi to develop any kind of court-relationship the way Engin did it last year. Engin was a senior last year…he played for 4 years. Don’t compare Degand to Engin just yet.

Also don’t underestimate Barton. DivII national champs might not sound like much, and they were overmatched in height for sure, but those teams know they are gonna lose so they are gonna play harder than they ever have against D1 teams.

Since football is no longer Div1A and AA and they go by FBS and FCS…do the D1 bball schools now go by: BMMS (Basketball March Madness Subdivision)?

  19. packgrad93 11/02/2007 at 3:26 PM #

“I guarantee you will not see us hosting up threes (ala the weave and heave) everytime a team goes into a zone this year.”

we will shoot 3’s when they’re open against a zone. why post a against double team when Costner is wide open for 3? They’re plenty of ways to attack a zone, but great, quick passing & hitting a few 3’s is the fastest way to force the other team to get out of it.

  20. packbackr04 11/02/2007 at 3:28 PM #

packgrad, the point is that you play “your game”… you dont let your opponent dictate what you are going to do in a game.

its the same for football. you start the game wanting to establish the run. they go a few scores up, and then drop back in a zone defense to force you to go away from the run and play a more risky pass game.

and if other teams start playing zone on us, the only thing sid should do is keep pounding it inside as long as he can.

i’ve been around state for about ten years and two degrees…the change in attitude towards basketball is amazing ove the past two seasons…. maybe, we can be a legit acc contender…..feels great after football this year.

Fans: Our younger fans are going to have to be reeducated on how to cheer for a kickazz team again. Case in point, when you have 94 points with a couple of minutes left and the scrubs are in, you do not stand quietly with your arms crossed or at your side. You scream and chant for 1) the scrub to make a three and 2) the team to break 100.

Also, to repeat the yearly plea: The little super quick Mexican sounding thing the band plays to each section is the NC STATE FIGHT SONG PLAYED REALLY FAST! You’re supposed to yell “GO STATE!” really fast at the break, not “hey!” or “Oy” or whatever. Get it together folks.

“and if other teams start playing zone on us, the only thing sid should do is keep pounding it inside as long as he can.”

Sid is smart enough to pound it inside when there’s an advantage & spot-up for 3’s when that’s the advantage.
