NC State 94 Barton 57: ‘More help has arrived’

You couldn’t tell it by his 22-point performance, but Brandon Costner experienced a rare kind of cold spell Thursday night at the RBC Center. It came in stretches when he was sitting on the bench during N.C. State’s 94-57 exhibition victory over Barton, the defending NCAA Division II men’s basketball champion.

“I felt myself getting cold, like I needed to put a heating pad on to warm back up,” said Costner, who played 25 of the 40 minutes. “I didn’t [feel] that last year.”

Chill. Coach Sidney Lowe said State’s starters — each of whom logged more than 33 minutes a year ago — need to get use to playing fewer minutes this season.

More help has arrived

There are plenty of links out there for you to surf if you want more.

A few comments:

* GoPack: ‘Five Wolfpack players hit double figures on the night, led by sophomore forward Brandon Costner, who scored 17 of his game-high 22 points in the first half. Junior Courtney Fells followed with 16 points, while senior Gavin Grant had 14 and freshmen J.J. Hickson and Tracy Smith had 11 each. Fells led the team with seven rebounds, and Costner added six.’

* Costner was…Costner

* Degand turned in the kind of line that will win State a lot of games this year. Pack Pride: “The quick point guard finished up with eight points, six assists, two rebounds, two blocked shots and a steal, with just two turnovers, in 28 minutes. Degand drilled all six of his free-throw attempts, in addition to showcasing impressive speed that will occasionally need to be slowed down.”

* Courtney Fells’ statistics looked more like a Gavin Grant line as he logged 7 rebounds along with some blocked shots, 2 assists and 3 steals in route to scoring 16 points.

* JJ Hickson rushed things in the first half but settled down in the second. N&O: “J.J. Hickson, the McDonald’s All-American, also contributed 11 points, plus five rebounds and three steals. He is big, strong, physically mature and eager to shine. At times he rushed offensively. But that’s a correctable flaw for the player counted on to spell Ben McCauley in the post.”

* Tracy Smith is about an inch or so shorter than I expected. But, he was composed and scored nine points in the first half. N&O: “Freshman Tracy Smith looked smooth and composed coming off the bench, scoring 11 points in 11 minutes, and said “this gives me a lot of confidence.”

* A look at the box score reveals a nice distribution of minutes. In regular season games I expect Hickson’s minutes to increas, Ferguson’s minutes to be 100% replaced by Javi Gonzalez, and then some game by game adjustments based on match-up advantages and who has the hot hand on the evening. You may see Fells and Grant log just a few less minutes each due to line-up shifts where Costner is moved to the wing to make room for Hickson (and even Smith).

* The same idiots on the “Idiot Boards” who thought that Trevor Ferguson was going to help the Pack last season are perplexed at why Simon Harris didn’t play more last night. Really? Who do you want to bench, Einsteins? There are only 120 minutes to split amongst Gavin Grant, Brandon Costner, Tracy Smith, Dennis Horner and JJ Hickson in the front court. Do explain how you would manage this situation other than petitioning the NCAA to add a sixth player on the court.

* For more on the rotation GoPack gives us the following: “Lowe was particularly impressed with the way Degand, a sophomore transfer from Iowa State who sat out all of last season, handled the offense, dishing out six assists with only two turnovers in 28 minutes of play. When Degand was out of the game, the Wolfpack relied on Fells and Grant to bring the ball up the court, which will likely be the case until injured freshman Javi Gonzalez recovers from the torn ligaments in his thumb that will likely keep him out until mid-November.”

As for the Wolfpack’s weaknesses –

* State needs to exercise much more dominance in rebounding when playing such a smaller team. If you remember, the Pack was not a great rebounding team last year, but improved dramatically by year end. I think that rebounding will naturally improve the more minutes that JJ Hickson logs.

* Coach Lowe commented on State’s inability to stop Barton’s dribble penetration. There is NO DOUBT that the Wolfpack’s biggest deficiency last year was defense; and therefore defense represents the biggest opportunity for improvement. Degand and Javi Gonzalez have the athletic ability to help control the opposing point guard’s dribble penetration. Our wings have to get better at mixing their athleticism with their height advantage on defense.

Basketball is back. All is right with the world again.

Defensive rebounding was definitely the biggest “flaw” in last nights game. I am not too worried yet about stopping penetration. The Barton guys were significantly smaller than whoever was guarding them on State and they had a quickness advantage. It was nice seeing an NCSU point guard break his man off the dribble, draw help defense, and dish the ball for an easy basket. Basketball can be such an easy game.

I love Horner’s game. He doesn’t wow you with anything physically, but the guy knows how to play basketball. He will be a great guy to have coming off the bench.

Other than watching on a laptop, I really enjoyed the game.

It’s great to be a Pack fan!

“A look at the box score reveals a nice distribution of minutes.”

This is going to be interesting to watch all year and a challenge for Coach Lowe. During the 12 minutes Degand was on the bench, the point guard position was manned by Ferguson, Fells or Grant. These 3 need to be playing zero minutes at the point. This is not a criticism of these players, just that they are not point guards – they don’t need to be playing center either. I believe you are correct regarding Javy taking all of Ferguson’s minutes. We still don’t know what role Johnson will play when he becomes eligible.

I would love to see at least one player per game with a very productive line that plays around 8 – 12 minutes in the game. Tracy Smith was a good example in this game.

As for the defensive rebounding, I think the key is stopping the dribble penetration. We took away the shot, and forced them to drive, where the big men were waiting. Unfortunately, when the big man step out to block the shots, they leave their man open for the O-bound.

This might have been a tactic by Sid (or is it Syd?) to force their guards to penetrate – their strength last year was the 3 pt shot. Even in exhibition games it shows Sid has the prepared the team for their opponent.

the barton guys may have been smaller and quicker but when you expect to be as good as the pack can be it should be a matter of pride to not let D-II players get by you. that said defensively and on the boards (both ends of the floor) the pack should dramatically improve with a few live game situations simply as they realize that there is now a bench and they can afford to be more aggressive, once you do that D and rebounding are largely a want to thing

Interesting that Degand was touted as a “shoot first” PG given the way he played this first game. PG is key for us this year.

I like Harris, but I just do not see how he can get minutes on this team. He would have been a god send last year.

  8. WolfmanDave 11/02/2007 at 9:49 AM #

Stopping dribble penetration is the major downside of moving Costner to the wing. We did it a couple times last night, and their guy got by him pretty easily. I think he’s a great player, but perimeter defense is not a strength for him.

  9. Par Shooter 11/02/2007 at 9:57 AM #

I thought Degand looked good on both ends of the floor. I was especially impressed with how he moved his feet on D but he will certainly face much tougher tests and we’ll have to see how he fares against top-level PG’s.

Hickson looks like a beast physically but it is going to take some work for him to be the salvation of our rebounding woes that we’ve hoped for. I watched him closely on the defensive glass and he definitely needs to work on boxing out. He’s probably used to just getting every rebound in HS based on ability. I’m sure the coaches will work with him on this and his work ethic should allow for rapid improvement in this area. Honestly, the whole team needs to do a better job of boxing out. Dribble penetration was part of the reason why they got so many O rebounds but it wasn’t the whole story.

I was also surprised at how winded Hickson got after a couple of minutes. I’m figuring he was probably amped up for his 1st college game and just got a bit too much adrenaline.

I know it’s silly, but I thought it was pretty cool that Johnny Thomas was dressed in warm-ups even though he is out for the year. It just seems to speak to wanting to really be part of the team even if he can’t get out on the floor.

A couple observations – having a point guard that can shoot free throws is huge. In tight, end of game situations where we have the lead Degand will likely have the ball in his hands and be sent to the line frequently. He seems to have a nice repeatable stroke at the line.

We ran when presented with easy opportunities but I think Sid wanted to see us in our halfcourt offense so there were many times when Degand was VERY deliberate in getting the ball over half court. And really, I think our half court offense is good enough that unless running presents us with an easy chance it isn’t necessary.

One reason the halfcourt offense is so good is McCauley. It’s been said before but what a great passer that kid is. I did notice that we seemed to have a couple designed plays where Degand just broke his defender down off the dribble and then dished in the lane. There was one in particular where we had 4 guys literally standing on the blocks while Degand dribbled up top, then he took off and made something happen in the lane.

Overall, a real nice performance. It will be interesting to see how Duke does against Barton. I’m betting their score will be more lopsided just because Duke is so good at being relentless for 40 minutes, even against horribly overmatched teams.

I don’t recall seeing Costner play the 3 at all last night. He was guarding some smaller guys but I don’t think he was ever playing w/ 2 other inside players. It seemed to be McCauley/Costner, then Hickson for McCauley, then Smith for Costner a few minutes later. I’ll admit I left with about 6 min to play to get the kids home and in bed so maybe he played some 3 towards the very end.

    Wow!!

These are just FANTASTIC comments all around.

Talk about the difference between the level of interaction here compared to average message boards.

All of these points provide super insight.

    Thanks!

Sidney Lowe has commented that Hickson’s biggest need is to get into better shape.

I don’t know why I was thinking Marques Johnson would be able to play in this game. If I recall correctly from the Avie Lester disaster of 1990, the NCAA looks at participation in exhibition games the same as they do regular season games, yes?

Someone mentioned Smith being shorter…is he about 6-7?

  14. jbpackfan 11/02/2007 at 10:25 AM #

I thought the team came out ready to play, and the starting 5 looked very good. There was a bit of a drop off after the first couple substitutions, but I think that can be attributed to youth and getting used to playing with different guys.

Overall it was a good performance. Costner looks great, McCauley wasnt asked to do much but looks very good. I really like Degand’s ability to blow past people and penetrate. Smith was schooling his man in the first half, but the guy was about 6 inches shorter.

I’m interested to see how the rotation will play out this year. My guess, listing the player with the most PT first and so on:
Costner, McCauley and Hickson will just rotate the 4-5 positions with a few minutes for Smith.
Grant, Fells, Horner and Smith will spend time on the wings (which gives Smith a little more opportunity for minutes than just playing the 4).
Degand, Javi and Johnson (I imagine Johnson could see spot duty at the 1 and 2).

I listened to the radio broadcast so it is with great anticipation I read the comments from people who actually saw the game. Thanks to all.
I compare this team to a year ago and the greatly increased depth is simply amazing.

You guys are all living in a dream world. Don’t you know that it takes at least 5 or 6 years before you should expect to see any improvement?

  17. lush 11/02/2007 at 10:46 AM #

tracey smith looked ten times better than he did in the red white game. i think he made his first 4 shots back to back.

jj was trying too hard and looked ten times worse than in the red white game. i thought he would dominate the smaller players but struggled with his touch around the basker. however, he still had some awesome dunks.

fells and costner looked great, shot great, hit there open threes. very nice.

mccauly and grant were on the floor but i dont remember them doing much, they probably didnt need to and i was probably watching the new guys.

ballhandling needs to improved across the board. i thought there were way too many fast break oppurtunities that ended up out of control and one of our guys losing the ball. not neccesarily a turnover, but they had to slow down and regroup on some 2 on 1 and even some 3 on 1 oppurtunities. degand, grant, fells, and ferguson were all guillty.

im suprised degand only had 2 turnovers, he reminded me of clifford crawford at times, too fast for his own good.

  18. skywalkerdt 11/02/2007 at 10:48 AM #

the nice thing with this team is you know fells, grant, costner, mccauley and even horner are ready to play at a high level right now. everyone else will need time to adjust to live action college hoops and then to the ACC. that combo will get the early wins with more key components than most teams that have a high level of experience and get the team as a whole to peak later in the season as the hickson’s and pg’s really figure this thing out.

even with all the great stuff around him i’m waiting to see fells become a star as he’s shown flashes of last year-when that happens the sky is the limit

Will be interesting to see how Dook plays them too. Dook absolutely destroyed Shaw, and Shaw travels to UNX this weekend.

One thing that sticks out to me about Dook – thye put 134 on the board, but their key returning players still struggled shooting. Nelson was 3-12 or something like that, Paulus 2-7, Henderson 50%. The new guys or guys who did not play much all had the 7-8 night, which I would not expect against ACC competition. I am still not sold on Dook.

  20. skywalkerdt 11/02/2007 at 10:51 AM #

duke is duke and will always be a good club but i don’t imagine their athleticism has improved enough to manage against teams like STATE and those boys from chapel hell. paulus is a good point but i can’t see him staying in front of lawson or degand

  21. cooldrip 11/02/2007 at 11:07 AM #

I agree with SFN in that it will take 5-6 years to see improvement. By then, the trophy case will be full, and the rafters at the RBC won’t look so barren anymore … takes time to furnish a nice new house, don’t ya know!

  22. RAWFS 11/02/2007 at 11:09 AM #

It’s not only Degand that Paulus will have to worry about — it’s the rotation of Degand and Gonzalez. If State can get good play from both and have fresh legs in at nearly all positions late in games, no opposition lead will be safe.

  23. lupin 11/02/2007 at 11:13 AM #

Wasnt too impressed with Degand. Very quick, but out of control as scouting reports have stated. I hope Gonzalez is better or we will be a 4th place ACC finisher.

  24. cooldrip 11/02/2007 at 11:16 AM #

Curious as to how Degand looked on jumpers, if he took any. I really think, because of our interior strength, alot of teams will play zone against us. A few timely jump shots from our point gaurd, both beyond the arc and pulling up on penetration, will bust a zone up real quick.

  25. skywalkerdt 11/02/2007 at 11:17 AM #

consider how many season previews you read that remind you of state’s regular season conference record, the problem with that is if games were 30 minutes state may have won the acc regular season title they just ran out of gas late in games, now you talk about same team with depth to keep them alive
