Monday Morning Coach – How to Fix What Ails Pack Hoops (Update)

3:00pm Update from SFN
BJD’s entry here is fantastic, and has generated some of the best comments we’ve had on the blog in a while (as has the other basketball entries over the last 24 hours). With this said, we wanted to pass along this link from the N&O as emphasis/support for BJD’s entry. Check out the comments at the bottom of the N&O’s entry:

It’s only Game 2 but Ben McCauley is already pressing. With Hickson playing spectacularly in front of him, he’s coming off the bench and trying to do too much — make an extra cute assist or take the ball through traffic to the basket. McCauley played only 14 minutes on Sunday. He scored two points and had one rebound.

Sidney Lowe needs to figure out how to use McCauley and Hickson together, otherwise there will be more home losses to Sun Belt teams.

Here’s one suggestion: Use McCauley in the high post, where Costner is currently situated, move Costner to the wing and keep Hickson low. That allows your best talent to be on the floor at the same time. Fatigue may not allow the three to play together in the first half, but all three should be on the floor in the final 8 to 10 minutes of the game.

I start this exercise by acknowledging that Sidney Lowe and staff know more about basketball than me. I also don’t get to watch the team practice. That said, I think it is a valuable and fun exercise to discuss what we have seen so far, and brainstorm on how to right the ship. If you don’t like it, just don’t read or comment. Simple as that.

1) Start Gavin at the 2. First, Gavin’s ball-handling, decisionmaking, and shot all look much improved this year (he’s always been a solid passer when not playing the point, IMHO). He is also willing to drive the lane, and can do so successfully. Last, but not least, I don’t see any f-ing alternative (see item 2 below). We can either go with 3 bigs (see item 3 below) or start Horner.

2) Give Ferguson’s role to Fells, and return Ferguson to his 2006-07 role. From what I’ve seen, the existing 2 guard rotation has been a complete sinkhole, both offensively and defensively (the fact that our PG rotation is a half-sinkhole (offense) makes this even more untenable). Ferguson’s defensive limitations are particularly acute, but I am more disappointed in Fells’ play, given his superior talent level. Rather than having Trevor as a placeholder until MJ is eligible, let it be Fells. He can either step up his game or risk being banished to the bench until garbage time. To me, the main benefit of depth is having flexibility to bench guys that are half-assing it, or playing really stupid/out of control. Grant seems to have gotten the memo, but not Fells. It’s time to be more direct with that message.

3) Try the “Three Bigs” lineup. This doesn’t have to be a starting lineup, or even more than 5-10 minutes a game. But it gives us more flexibility in not being hostage to the inconsistent Fells or the unknown Johnson. It also gives McCauley a window to more playing time (if he earns it), which hopefully shakes him from his mental funk. Big Ben knows he isn’t going to displace Hickson or Costner sans fouls or injury, so he needs some hope here. What’s the worst that could happen? Poor defense and/or offensive spacing? We’re getting that already. At least maybe we could out-rebound a team of midgets for a few minutes.

4) Recognize that all reserves are not created equal. Of the current reserves, McCauley and Horner are clearly a cut above the rest of the bench – in talent, game readiness, or both. They have demonstrated a clear ability to contribute in the past, and to give them minutes that are more or less equivalent to Ferguson is kind of insulting. They should also have a chance to play more with the starting lineup, to improve our offensive flow and avoid creating a de facto caste system. The “wave” substitution pattern needs to go away – this isn’t the NBA, and our opponents aren’t going to do it (for good reason – unless you are pressing hard and often, it doesn’t make much sense).

5) Tell some brooding players to grow the hell up. J.J. Hickson should not be asked or expected to apoligize for being really damned good. It’s not like he acts like a prima donna or shoots 25 times a game. He gives the most consistent defensive effort. He picks up his teammates with putback baskets. He is often the first player down the court, offensively and defensively. Maybe some of the “hurt feelings” contingent should try giving that kind of effort. And maybe they should realize that one good ACCT weekend shouldn’t give them a sense of entitlement. News flash – we were a freaking NIT team last year, and needed a late surge to even be that. Increasing the talent level can only be a good thing, assuming you want to challenge for the conference title and make some noise in March this year.

What say you, SFN commenters?

Some really good insight on from section six here:
    http://www.sectionsix.blogspot.com/

Among the most interesting – Grant has the highest efficiency rating offensively. But his defensive #s are the worst of any starter. Of the starters, Hickson had the greatest impact on D. Overall, Horner had the best impact on D.

Strictly speaking – it appears Sidney is starting the right 5…It also looks like we don’t lose much w/ Horner comes on the floor. With Gonzales and Ferguson on the floor, defensively and offensively we’ll struggle.

This doesn’t mean that these guys shouldn’t play. It just appears to mean that right now, these guys shouldn’t play together. We definitely shouldn’t employ “The Blue Team/Red Team” concept if we’re in a close game.

    unrelated hijack:

With Julius Hodge out of the NBA, N.C. State’s list consists of two players that left after their sophomore season and one player who transferred/was kicked off the team. Yep, State really misses Herb Sendek.

“All I can say is it doesn’t matter what any of us say or think. We don’t make the gameplans nor do we make the line-ups. ”

I think that was the “point” I was trying to make and someone evidently misunderstood it.

Whether this was “supposed to be a valuable and fun exercise, I’ll debate that one! It’s way to early to get too critical too fast!

  4. JeremyH 11/20/2007 at 1:43 AM #

I have to disagree. It is possible to “critique with perspective” which is what many of us have done here, illuminating deterrents to the success of the team at this time. Here’s the good news: the potential for this year’s team is immense! Yes, it’s true. But growth from experiences like last night is instrumental. Look at UNC against Georgetown last March. They were in a position to win but were not challenged enough times in the final five minutes of a game to have the experience to handle it. This team knows how to win as the underdog, but has no idea how to conduct business as a major favorite. The difference between criticism now and criticism of years past of our team is that we are all cognizant that the team has the potential to make the Final Four. With Hickson in the middle, if we can play hard-nosed “smart” defense, hit the occasional open jumper, and penetrate/dish with our new speedy players, no one can stop this team. But son, you have work for it.

Just to clear one thing up, Javi is 6’0 or close to it (5’11). He walks by me in between classes and he stands at about the same height as myself, and I am 6’0. He probably just looks short on the court because everyone else is 6’4 and taller.

I pretty much agree with the 5 points above though, except to add in that I really think Degand will not end up being our leading point guard. Even if Johnson can’t shoot worth a damn, he’s got 30 extra pounds and a extra inch on Degand and will probably make less mistakes driving since he doesn’t have the urge that Degand has to get across the court as fast as possible, or attempt layups in the face of 3 defenders and then miss 2 free throws. Degand isn’t terrible, but I don’t believe he’s ACC caliber. I’m assuming since Johnson was recruited to play at Tennessee (A top 25 team currently) as a 4 star recruit that he’s got talent and can play in the ACC.

While it’s an example that will make the blood of my fellow wolfpackers boil, recall a UNC team lost to Santa Freaking Clara and they did OK. It’s not quite apples and apples, as that was a road game, but the point remains– even the best of teams will hiccup. This is still a team largely comprised of individuals who can’t even go out and legally order a beer; this happens, and no doubt will again.

  7. Old_Wolf 11/20/2007 at 9:31 AM #

I watched some of the Maryland/UCLA and Duke/Princeton game and both of those (ACC) teams are playing very well together – hopefully the Wolfpack TEAM can come together and play well together sooner than later.

I didnt see this mentioned above, but a caller on the Sid Lowe show last night asked if we would continue to see the 9-10 man rotation throughout the season or if it would be paired down. Sid said we are about to see the numbers get paired down. He said it as if this is something he had already thought about and made decisions on. He alluded to the first two games being times when he was still learning what players on the team can do what together. I hope the loss will end up being positive in that it will cause a quicker move into a smaller group of our most talented players instead of what looked to me like exhibition game expiriments in our openers.

Interesting quote from Ben in today’s N and O

Noting the Pack had four starters returning from last year, he said, “It’s our spot. We earned it. We went through it all last season, so we should keep it.”

    Grow up Ben!!!

  10. PackHooligan 11/20/2007 at 10:59 AM #

^sf59, that is a definitely a worrisome quote.

Did anyone else see that guy on UCLA’s haircut? I think even Anthony Mason would think it was too much.

Also, watching Duke play these early season games reminds me of why I think K is such a great coach. He gets his guys to play with the utmost intensity against any opponent no matter what the score.

  11. oldflyingfarmer 11/20/2007 at 11:20 AM #

I agree that the Coach has to play whichever players he thinks will win the game, but unless Ben is sick, I am hard pressed to not see him getting many more minutes. I trust Coach Lowe, but sometimes its hard to see the reasoning. We were playing better last year with less talent.
Somebody get this team going in the right direction. (I have confidence that we will get there.)

haha mike^^^ that was me. i thought he kind of danced around it a little, which is i guess what they do on those shows.

competition brings out the best… i’d like lowe to create 2 5-man ‘teams’ and pit them against each other (in how how well they do against the competition). that way, the coaches can instruct one 5-man team while the other is out on the court. also, there has to be an advantage to always playing against the competition with your same 4 teammates out on the court – you’d have a better feel what their actions would be. imagine how on opponent would react when we could sub an entire new team with relatively fresh legs after we have a big run. it could be the knock-out punch.

  15. PamlicoPack 11/20/2007 at 11:26 AM #

How do you guys think we will do in the next four games?…I think if we can get by Rider, we can go 2-2 (I’m guessing we eek out vs. Rider, lose the next night, and then win in the 3/4 place game, before losing at MSU). We lose to Rider, we could go 1-3. Yikes, 2-4 with Davidson and Cincinatti still to come in December would be brutal, and likely require a really strong run in February to achieve our NCAA tournament hopes. The UNO loss is the kind that keeps an 8-8 or 9-7 ACC team out of the NCAAs. We can’t afford another one.

  16. packbackr04 11/20/2007 at 11:34 AM #

travel^^ i think taht is what sid was trying to do these first 2 games. it hasnt worked. when your 2nd 5 man team consists of only two acc caliber players in ben and dennis. that leaves fergie, javi, and smith as the other 3 in that lineup and playing that lineup, they are gonna get crushed as referenced in SFN’s previous post about the futility of said 2nd lineup.. namely TFerg. sid needs to get it down to a 7-8 man rotation and paly only his best players. Coach K does this every year even when he has like 12 mcdonalds AA’s on his team.

  17. packbackr04 11/20/2007 at 11:39 AM #

i would like to hear what shootinguard has to say about the malcontent amongst the team right now. Last night it also sounded like sid was kinda calling out some players, saying that some kids were gonna have to get used to their new roles. (i kept thinking he was referring to Ben) and i just find it really odd that arguably our best player last year cant find his way onto to the court this year?? except when he has to play with Fergie, which also seems like punishment to me. i just feel like that if ben was getting burn with the starters, we would be seeing him playing better. he had a nice would be assist to javi in the paint that javi couldnt get a handle on. its not like Ben has been putrid, he just hasnt been surrounded by any players yet.

  18. burnbarn 11/20/2007 at 11:50 AM #

I thought coach was referring more to BC last night.. He basically said that roles have changed and everyone better adjust to it. He specifically mentioned BC and how he had to have a talk with him…rather he talked and BC listened.
I think coach will solve this issue.

  19. PackGirl 11/20/2007 at 12:03 PM #

From above: “Noting the Pack had four starters returning from last year, he (Ben) said, “It’s our spot. We earned it. We went through it all last season, so we should keep it.” “Grow up Ben!!!”

Ben made this statement a month ago, prior to the first exhibition game. (Look at the N&O article) I think he was correct to think that last year’s starters should have been starting at that point. Why is everyone taking quotes out of context and making assumptions based on conjecture, that Ben Mc Cauley has some big attitude problem? Looks like the News and Disturber is trying to create confilct. And I think it’s great that Grant can admonish the “un-named” teammate (presumed to be Ben by everyone) for being unhappy about lack of playing time. If Grant’s time had been cut back to 14 minutes, I wonder what he would be saying.

You can argue all you want that Ben is some whining baby, blah, blah, blah. Yet we have been playing poorly these first 2 games when he’s gotten very few minutes – and as others have pointed out, most of his minutes were played with the “second team”. Ben has lost about 75% of his minutes compared with last year, yet Costner and Fells (who have played lousy) have continued to get 30 minutes. Only seems logical that while Lowe is “experimenting” he should try giving Ben more minutes (with the starters) and Costner and Fells less. I hope we’ll see that Thursday.

  20. Dr. BadgerPack 11/20/2007 at 12:29 PM #

Thursday probably won’t be indicative of the rest of the season either. With 3 games in 3 days, this may be an “ACC Tournament” practice run; with player substitutions galore. That probably means Hickson’s minutes drop a bit and Ben gets more by default. I would guess most everything else will stay the same although I could see Horner stealing a few more minutes here and there. Yes, this unfotunately means Ferguson will get his 10+ per game too, and we can only hope he works a bit on his, err, “+/-“.

  21. JeremyH 11/20/2007 at 1:32 PM #

^^^^can’t wait to see this team in a tournment. the outside shooting worries me though. does Johnson play only after January has started?

  22. sf59 11/20/2007 at 1:41 PM #

^Mid Dec when the 1st semester is over

  23. PapaJohn 11/20/2007 at 4:11 PM #

I remember Coach V saying years ago that he liked to play everyone as much as possible before conference play starts, then he would fine tune the line-up and set his rotation. And then at tourney time he’d tell the guys, “No more Mr Nice Guy. If I think you can help the Pack win an NCAAT game, you will play. If not, you will not play. I can’t worry about hurt feelings at that time of the year.” (not an exact quote, but that was the message)
Sid’s got to get everyone on the floor to see how they react when the crowd is loud and your nose hairs are being shown in high definition TV. You don’t want to discover at Cameron that someone you are relying on gets intimidated by hecklers.
This is a great thread, but like was implied at the beginning, we’ve got the right skipper at the helm. It will be fun to watch him coach his way out of this one.
Now, all of that said, I can’t wait to see the three bigs on the court at once. Sid’s got to try it sooner or later.
    Go Pack!

  24. Dan 11/20/2007 at 5:21 PM #

Ben should be playing based on last year. Especially to start the season.

    Two reasons:

    1) He earned it by playing his guts out last year. I’d be pissed to. Everybody would. This “take one for the team” nonsense isn’t reality. You are telling a kid who played brilliantly to sit. Its not Marcus Stone.I love the guy, but Marcus wasn’t good at QB. Ben was very good last year. Not even applicable.

    2) He earned it by being maybe our best all around player last year.

With Engin gone, who is our best returning passer? If its not Ben, who is it? Wait. That’s right. Its Ben.

Anyone see the ball movement the last two games? That should settle it right there. But I’ll go on.

We need that kid on the floor. He makes the other guys better. Now, before you guys start posting the efficiency stats you need to look to see who Ben shared court time with. Ben only shared one offensive possession THE ENTIRE GAME with Brandon. The best frontcourt tandem in the ACC last year isn’t even being allowed to play together. Ben only shared 6 possessions with JJ. That means Ben was only out with another of the bigs for less than 10% of our possessions. That is not proper utilization of a kid who is, arguably, our best passer. The ball should be getting into his hands almost every possession. He makes plays. But if you put him out there with the b team all day, you handicap his game. Remember last year and the high-lows? The pick and rolls? Where did that go? What? JJ cant run those plays? Of course he can. He’s not the b-ball equivalent to Mike Vick: The freak talent who cant digest an offense. We don’t have to simplify it for him. I don’t accept that. JJ will do the work.

Hickson is a monster. But he needs to expand that ridiculous post game and pass the ball if he’s going to be effective in league play. I think we all know that a Sun Belt double team is not the same as an ACC double team. But maybe he’ll still dominate. I don’t know. What I do know is that even with Engin out in the early non-con games last year, we still never struggled with low major teams, so lets not try to say that we are still better than we were last year at this time even without Engin. We are not. And lets not argue that UNO just caught lightning in a bottle. They shot 35%. We just got beat by a Sun Belt team that was having a bad night shooting the ball. That’s the reality.

And none of this means JJ shouldn’t play. It means that Ben should. That’s not a contradiction. There is no reason why two of those guys are on the bench at the same time until Tracy Smith really starts to shine. Even then, I might argue that Ben should be out there the most.
