Lowe Speaks To The Media

Thoughts on the starting rotation and Ben McCauley coming off the bench:

The thing I’ve told our guys is we don’t have a set starting lineup. All the positions were open and they are still open. As Ben progresses and works and continues to be the Ben that we know, certainly starting is in the picture for him. We’re going to put the best lineup out on the floor. I didn’t promise any of these guys anything except I want to win. I want to win. The guys that are playing well, playing hard, playing the right way, those are the guys that are going to play.

Having said that, sometimes that sixth man is more important coming off your bench than starting. I don’t know who that guy is. I’m not saying that’s Ben’s role or is going to be his role. Right now, at this point, it is, and he has to play the way we know he is capable he can play. He will… I’m not concerned about Ben at all because he plays hard every night. Certainly starting is there. If he works his way back in there… and that could be at four or five. It doesn’t matter. We’re just going to try to put the best lineup on the floor.

    Brickman,

Oden & Ohio State had MIKE CONLEY—a now PRO point guard leading them. BIG difference.

A huge part of the problem of working in JJ is having to simultaneously work in a freshman stud. If Engin was back—or we had a Mike Conley freshman in the lineup—the problem of working a stud like Oden at center would be greatly reduced.

The problem is not JJ. When you go 12for12 in game 1, NO ONE on the team should be complaining about getting their shots in game 2—especially when they are not shooting or rebounding or playing defense as well as JJ. It would be different if JJ was shooting 2for20 and not playing a lick of defense or rebounding—like some of the other guys are doing.

The problem is SULKING starters from a 5-11 ACC / 20-16 NIT team complaining about new blood taking their minutes and shots. Would they prefer to go 5-11 and 20-16 NIT again and get their minutes and shots—or learn to play with a beast and compete for top 3 ACC and NCAA Tourney like most people believe we have the talent for? Are they more interested in the program or themselves?

Where Lowe should be faulted is for playing that terrible 2nd team lineup for extended minutes in order to get guys minutes while letting the starters get cold.

It is funny watching so many of the folks who complained about Sendek not playing freshman who were supposedly all world now complaining about Lowe playing a freshman who clearly has the potential to be all world—IF he can find teammates willing to playing outside of their little selfish worlds…
