The Ol’ Ball Coach back to Duke, anybody (laden with sarcasm)?

  2. Mr O 11/27/2007 at 12:21 AM #

I would rather have 11 NFL players on our defense next year than Reggie Herring.

Caught some of the TOB’s coaches show tonight. It was interesting that Tony Hayes asked him about Russell Wilson.

TOB said he would get a strong look this spring. Stated that he was a great leader – and he was trying to pump the guys on the sideline up vs. UMd. Stated he had a lively strong arm and could do a good job making plays w/ his feet. (I guess this means he does both baseball and spring football??)

Tonights news here in Alabama says Ole Miss is interested in Houston Nutt. they also put Auburn’s DC as the front runner for the GTech job – he is good friends with the Tech AD, to add to his hefty coaching credentials.

  5. EverettBeez 11/27/2007 at 1:33 AM #

Will Muschamp is the Auburn DC.
I’d love to see Nutt at Ole Miss – man we don’t like those hogs, this would be a great stick in their collective eye. And give Nutt a chance to stick to them too.

Y’all don’t forget JimBo Fischer! He’s getting a lot of talk around these parts for one of these jobs, like GT.

GT is now, and will forever be, second fiddle to UGa. The history, size, types of education programs, and where their alumni end up all play a role.

Dook will also always have problems with football because their alum’s are all off at Rutgers, UConn or some NHL game. They aren’t going to drive back to Durham for a game – Durham was fine for college, but for anything else? Couldn’t they play their games in Chapel Hill? Where we could get a nice wine and a good bagel? Or maybe North Raleigh. 😉

^ Have to disagree with that last paragraph. If Clemson can build a good program in the middle of nowhere SC, than certainly Duke can. They just need some leadership – the $ will flow and they’ll see some improvement. I think they’ve just had so much BB success for 20+ years that there was no need to have success with the other revenue sport. K coming out and saying what he said puts a lot of pressure on the administration – as it should. The football program is an embarresment and has to bother a competitive guy like coach K. I’m betting a lot of others will jump on that band wagon now that the someone of stature has pointed out that the emperor has had no clothes on for the last four years.

I don’t think Nutt was fired. In fact, he was offered a two-year extension after the LSU win. He just chose to go his own way. It would be crazy if he ended up at Ole Miss.

  8. Texpack 11/27/2007 at 10:39 AM #

I don’t think Nutt would have quit if he didn’t have some pretty strong indications from somebody else that they were interested in hiring him. Ole Miss would be the most fun situation to watch him in.

There are enough jobs open this year that Art Briles, in spite of a drop off after Kevin Kolb, will likely end up somewhere better than U of H.

LSU may end up with a coordinator from somewhere if Les Miles waits until January to take the Michigan job.

The bowl games are going to be interested with all of the acting head coaches in charge.

Wulfpack, my morning paper confirms that Nutt resigned after being offered an extension. The paper also circulates the rumor that Tubberville might be going to Arkansas – his how state.

So think on that – Tubberville, who went from Ole Miss to Auburn goes to Arkansas, and Nutt from Arkansas to Ole Miss. Fellas – these teams aren’t just in the same conference, they are heated rivals and in the same division. lol – lordy, lordy you just got to love this kind of madness. Too bad it won’t all happen.

WolftownVa81 – my point about dook football is all their alumns, or many of them are from up north, and move back up north after school. With out these grads local to come back to games, it makes it that much more difficult to build a big program. Now, things might have changed since I left Raleighwood – but we always thought of Dook as South Jersey State. I don’t remember knowing anyone who went there. And I never went their when I was in HS or College – it was State or UNC for parties when I was down from App – or ECU, but that involved a woman and thus my poor judgment can be excused.

This is why the whole rivalry between UNC & Dook is such a laugh – I did not know a single person who graduated from dook growing up – Wake and Carolina were my rivals because I knew people who went to school or worked their. Its no surprise that ESPN of Bristol CONN is in love with dook – its smack dab in the heart of Dooks alumni base!

    NUTT TO OLE MISS

The Ole Miss beat writer for the Tupelo paper is reporting that two sources close to the program say Nutt has agreed to take the job. Here is his blog link (he’s also on wordpress!) if you want to follow along in the fun!

^If Coach K wanted Duke football to be successful he would have done something about it before now. The amount of investment they would need for football would draw resources away from basketball, at least in the short term. And I can’t believe Coach K would want that.

  12. RedTerror29 11/27/2007 at 10:47 AM #

Art Briles has interviewed for the Baylor job.

Nutt flew in to Oxford yesterday on Dickie Scrugg’s jet. He’s spent the night in town, and is expected – or we hope – he is announced as the new Head Coach this afternoon.

  14. noah 11/27/2007 at 10:53 AM #

Houston Nutt had problems at Arkansas that were away from the football field. He had an affair with some reporter, I think. Remember the thing about the 1,000 text messages that were made using university property, so they became public info?

He also ran into problems with that OC hire from two years ago. Some people claim he was forced to hire the guy….who brought Mitch Mustain and about nine other guys with him. None of that worked out.

Plus, he’s losing Darren McFadden, so it’s not like he’s got tons of talent coming back.

Navy, IMO, is a tougher gig than Dook. Not only do you have to find Ivy League caliber players, you have to get them a congressman to give them a recommendation. Yeah, they’ve probably got a system for doing that. But at Dook, you’ve only got ONE admission board to run through. At Navy, you’ve got two…and one of them is Congress.

And as far as the renovations go, thank GOD they are doing something about the bathrooms. Trying to move around that place to take a leak at halftime was like blood cells trying to get around Ralph Friedgen’s heart.

Dook had a shot to hire Bobby Ross a few years ago. They should have taken it. Why will someone take the Dook job? For the same reason that even the absolute biggest turkey movie of all time like “Battlefield Earth” can get people to show for work. There’s a limited number of opportunities for actors and head football coaches.

Being the head coach at Dook won’t ruin your career. Even if you lose every game, people will always say, “Yeah, but it was Dook.” People remember Steve Spurrier winning the ACC title in 1989, but they overlook the losing seasons he had there. And they forget that 1989 was pre-FSU and sort of a weird year for the league with several teams sort of in-between major championship runs. Fred Goldsmith had an equally impressive charge in 1994 (with his own players, not Spurrier’s talent) and he did the same thing at Rice. I don’t see anyone beating down his door to hire him.

As far as Ronald Wilson is concerned, why does everyone keep bringing up baseball? The guy was something like a 45th round draft pick last year. Hell, YOU were probably drafted in the 46th round. It’s not like the guy is Drew Henson.

Noah – I would like to hear your opinion on the below issue that I have absolutely no data to support:

I have a hunch that the biggest change Duke will have to make to improve football is in regards to admissions. This is a sensitive issue that will not likely be openly discussed but I think this is what K means when he says “committed”. It doesn’t require a wholesale change but 3 or 4 players a year can make a huge difference in 5 years. My gut tells me that Wake did a super job of quietly making this change and it has a lot to do with the success they are currently having. It is simply a numbers game – the more quality players you exclude for any reason, the harder it is to build a good program.

  16. noah 11/27/2007 at 11:39 AM #

I’m not aware of Wake lowering their academic standards. They’ve always taken a couple of academic exceptions, but they still are second in the conference in terms of academic standards.

Dook has said recently that they’ll allow a few more people in that normally they wouldn’t take, but they aren’t going to make large changes.

Stanford makes VERY few academic exceptions. Rice doesn’t. Navy and Army and Air Force don’t.

Wake is successful because they have one of the best football minds in the country leading their program. I know some people don’t like Grobe (which is odd, because he’s actually a terrific guy), but the dude is the reason Fisher DeBerry had so much success at Air Force, he’s transformed Ohio U. from a doorstop to a contender, and he’s done the same at Wake Forest.

  17. MatSci94 11/27/2007 at 11:48 AM #

The thing that surprised me the most about the Duke situation is the additude of the AD. After a decade or so of bad to dreadful football, and two hired-then-fired coaches by the same AD, I’m surprised that there wasn’t more of “what we are doing isn’t working, so we need to try something different” instead of what came off as “We are ‘this close’ to being really successful.”

My prediction is that nothing will change there until that mindset changes.

  18. burnbarn 11/27/2007 at 11:54 AM #

Great interview with Goldsmith this morning on 99.9… he was very funny. They asked who would think the dook job was a good one? and he said..well, I was at Rice, so Dook looked pretty good to me. He said he thinks they will get a young guy or a retread such as himself. (His words)
he also think Dook should allow academic exceptions.

  19. RickJ 11/27/2007 at 11:54 AM #

^Thanks Noah – Air Force, Army & Navy each have a prep school that can be entered to earn acceptance into the Academy. These schools have football teams that play a limited schedule. A lot of their best players go through the prep school but many never make it to the Academy.

We would have been very screwed if we held onto Amato for an extra year. State would have been WAY back in the pecking order, plus an extra year of bad recruiting for the program.

    Houston NUTT HIRED by MISSISSIPPI

U of M SID office has e-mailed the local media – Nutt will be introduced as the new Mississippi Head Coach tomorrow at noon central time.

  22. EverettBeez 11/27/2007 at 12:50 PM #

as to Tubberville – a $6 million dollar buy-out clause might just keep Mr. No Loyalty himself at the No Loyalty University. The two are perfect for each other, now if they’d just loose more often.

  23. McPete 11/27/2007 at 12:51 PM #

    RickJ:
I know that New Mexico Military Institute is one such school. My buddy went there one year before getting accepted into the navel academy. i think he got his nomination from none other than the VP Al Gore (before he was a famous scientist! – sarcasm). I saw him go through the process of trying to get into annapolis, and it has to be tougher than just about every university in this country (there were a couple of kids in my class who got into ivy league schools with less difficulty, and had a similar resume).

But how many games would navy win after a few seasons in the acc? they could still beat up non conference opponents, but i bet they’d be last place just about every year.

One question: has Duke football allowed as many exceptions as duke basketball? i guess that would require more of an estimate. what about as a percentage of their entire roster?

  24. noah 11/27/2007 at 12:53 PM #

    McPete – HELL no.

“Nutt will recieve 9.5 mil over four years with incentives for winning and bowl appearances. On another note Sylvester Croom will be undergoing test for a heart problem as early as tomorrow.”

This guy is way too in the know – he reports what Nutt had to eat this morning, lol.
