‘CBI’: March (not on CBS)

NCAA?
NIT?
try the CBI

The country has a new addition to ‘March Madness’. “The College Basketball Invitational” has been created and will pit 16 ‘deserving’ teams against each other in a a post-season tournament starting this season.

You can see the press release by clicking here.

The most interesting piece of all of this is the tournament’s format.

The College Basketball Invitational will be a single-elimination tournament, up until the Championship Series, with all games being played at campus sites. The Championship Series will be a best of three series, home-away-home, in which the higher seed will get the first and last (if necessary) home games.

I expect 95% of the country to make fun of this new tournament and criticize its existence. But, honestly, who cares? The tournament’s existence doesn’t hurt anyone. If it provides us all more basketball and gives your team another opportunity to play for something then that is fine with me.

This link will take you to a more detailed article about the new CBI.

For lack of a better place to post this, I figured I’d post it here – in the article “ACC Basketball Payers Sount Off”, http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaab/news?slug=rivals-179670&prov=rivals&type=lgns , check out the quote from Harvey Hale –

    Who has the craziest fans?

NC State. Man, they just some say some tough stuff, some harsh stuff. I was like, ‘Wow. Did he really say that.’

Did you see what Sean Singletary said in the article gumby posted when asked who has the nicest facility????? “I feel the most comfortable at NC State. I like the floor and the fans aren’t that loud.” Man, it’s too bad he doesn’t come to Raleigh this year.

I can’t tell if this tournament will choose teams after the NIT chooses teams or if they will both be choosing the same teams and then the team decides which tournament it wants to play in. A tournament that is lower than the NIT doesn’t sound that appealing. A tournament that competes to steal teams who would normally play in the NIT sounds a little more intriguing, but honestly, unless your team is in either tournament is it going to be that big of a deal? BTW, I didn’t see what channel will be showing it. If it’s on a network channel, then that may help, but if this is a tournament that is lower than the NIT and is only on CSTV or something like that, then will anyone even hear anything about it while it’s going on?

IIRC the NCAA owns the NIT, and has to grant permission to the CBI for teams to play. There is no way it will compete with the NIT for teams. It’ll get the leavin’s after all is said and done. Can you imagine the poop-storm if teams participated in an ‘unsanctioned” (meaning didn’t pay a boatload of money to the NCAA) postseason tournament?

Isn’t that sort of what happened with the BCS? I thought that was outside of the NCAA somehow. Of course there is no competing NCAA event.

Interesting link Gumby. I see logic isn’t a strong suit for James Mays. (if Duke has the craziest fans ‘by far’, then there can’t be a close second)

A bit surprised on the comments about Singletary, wouldn’t have thought he was that big of a talker.

With NC State students trying to start a tailgating tradition this year at basketball games it may not be long before State fans are the ‘craziest fans’.

JJ Hickson drops 31 in his debut!! Didn’t know where to post since no game thread, but this is awesome

fort – Sean Singletary was also noted as one of the biggest trash talkers – could it be that his comments about the RBC were made for that very reason?
