Wolfpack Mistakes Wearing On O’Brien

N.C. State coach Tom O’Brien is beginning to show the strain.

O’Brien came off tired, disappointed, irritated and — for the first time this season — a bit dispirited Saturday. The Wolfpack had lost to Florida State 27-10. Tailback Andre Brown had suffered a broken foot and was lost for the year.

The Wolfpack (1-5, 0-3 ACC) outplayed the Seminoles much of the first half and trailed just 17-10 after three quarters at Doak Campbell Stadium. But again, there were too many turnovers, penalties and mistakes that could not be overcome.

With the score tied 10-10 late in the first half, the Pack was called for an illegal block, then had an interception in the red zone. Another interception was returned for an FSU touchdown, and a roughing-the-punter penalty against State set up another FSU score. A holding penalty wiped out a long kickoff return by Jamelle Eugene.

By game’s end, the Pack had four turnovers, nine penalties and allowed six sacks. What could have been a close game wasn’t.

“Once again, we didn’t give ourselves a chance,” O’Brien said. “We played so hard, but we still don’t play smart enough. … As I told the team, we’re still making the dumb mistakes that we’ve got to stop making.”

And one of the hits that Evans was taking from the Noles last Saturday would just about break Wilson in two. How stupid would you think the staff was if they put Wilson out there, burn his redshirt, and then he suffers a career-ending injury due to our porous offensive line?

Pamlico Pack – I’ve linked the roster. Do me a favor – tell me how much Evans weighs and how much Wilson weighs:

Now, if Evans is taller than Wilson, who is “thicker”?

Finally – are you saying that the staff would be STUPID (your words) for playing Wilson this year – period?

I’ve never said it’s just the QB that’s holding us back, but I know that the OL played good enough to have us closer than 17 points. I think the QB is a huge part of it, and I’ll tell you right now, w/ the challenges our line has and the weaknesses of Evans, we’re “throwing something against the wall” if we think that Evans is suddenly going to wake up one moring w/ a good arm or be able to outrun a few DLs.

And as bad as Evans has been, not only has Wilson been worse…but he’s been worse than TWO OTHER guys that are in front of him.

You’re not arguing that we ought to put the backup QB in, you’re saying that we ought to put the backup’s backup’s backup in. And you’re saying that we ought to do this because he did well in a scrimmage several months ago against the scout team.

To draw a comparison to another team, I know there are a lot of people who don’t like Jake Delhomme (I this he’s fine, but whatever). The “put in David Carr!!” crowd doesn’t bother me. Carr is a perfectly capable QB and if you prefer him to Delhomme, while I don’t share your opinion, I don’t think that it’s completely insane.

The completely insane opinions come from the “sign Chris Leak and put HIM in!” crowd that managed to graduate from Independence High School. That Leak was apparently so bad with the Bears (THE BEARS! The team that had Rex Grossman as the starter!! THAT TEAM) that he couldn’t even manage to be the scout team QB doesn’t matter. About five years ago, he did real well in high school, therefore he ought to START for the Panthers.

    THAT…..is nuts.

There are a few flaws with that analogy. Jake Delhomme is good QB, good enough that he led a team to a superbowl and two NFC championship game appearances. Daniel Evans is NOT a good QB. So…it’s not perfect.

But I see too many similarities to give either much credence.

So I wonder if the “we have a real shot at beating Wake” crowd who put that game as one of the two most winnable on the remaining schedule earlier in this thread have changed their mind after watching the FSU/Wake game last night? I think we have an astronomically greater chance of winning at Miami than winning at Wake. I KNOW Wake is well coached…I don’t know about Miami…
