Wolfpack Mistakes Wearing On O’Brien

N.C. State coach Tom O’Brien is beginning to show the strain.

O’Brien came off tired, disappointed, irritated and — for the first time this season — a bit dispirited Saturday. The Wolfpack had lost to Florida State 27-10. Tailback Andre Brown had suffered a broken foot and was lost for the year.

The Wolfpack (1-5, 0-3 ACC) outplayed the Seminoles much of the first half and trailed just 17-10 after three quarters at Doak Campbell Stadium. But again, there were too many turnovers, penalties and mistakes that could not be overcome.

With the score tied 10-10 late in the first half, the Pack was called for an illegal block, then had an interception in the red zone. Another interception was returned for an FSU touchdown, and a roughing-the-punter penalty against State set up another FSU score. A holding penalty wiped out a long kickoff return by Jamelle Eugene.

By game’s end, the Pack had four turnovers, nine penalties and allowed six sacks. What could have been a close game wasn’t.

“Once again, we didn’t give ourselves a chance,” O’Brien said. “We played so hard, but we still don’t play smart enough. … As I told the team, we’re still making the dumb mistakes that we’ve got to stop making.”

^^Good teams don’t turn the ball over.

Are you saying the Cowboys aren’t a good team? They won with 5 interceptions last night. I think you meant – “Good teams can win even if they turn it over.” I’m not saying we’re a “good” team yet, but give me a break — We’ve got a chance against Wake!! Yes, LSU is #1 for good reason. Why did you even mention LSU?? Do we PLAY LSU?? What does that have to do with our turnovers? Yes, they are alot better than us.

  2. PamlicoPack 10/09/2007 at 10:28 AM #

I’ll stand by my statement. We have NO shot at beating Wake or Maryland. That Duke scored 36 points on Wake is a testament to the fact that Duke would kick our ass too, were they to play us this year. And no, Florida State is not a good team. They will be exposed when they play a team with DBs good enough (and tall enough) to match up with their receivers, because their failure to get over 200 yds rushing against us was pathetic.

  3. Mr O 10/09/2007 at 10:29 AM #

PamlicoPack: This is what I could find.

    NC State titles –

2006/07 M-Xcountry, WXcountry, Wrestling, Gymnastics(not an ACC title)
    2005/06 Softball
    2004/05 M-Xcountry
    2003/04 M-Xcountry
    2002/03 M-Xcountry, WXcountry

    That is pretty bad.

“Without the turnovers and a couple of bad penalties/no calls, we have a great chance of beating a good FSU in Tallahassee.”

Well this is an asinine statement. I could change 10 plays in about 90% of our football games and claim we would “have a great chance” of beating that team.

  5. TNCSU 10/09/2007 at 10:38 AM #

    Pamlico,
You must have been one of the doomsday posters that said we’d be down by 23 at halftime to Louisville. How’d that prediction turn out? I’ll just say, I disagree about the state of our team and leave it at that. FSU beat a good Alabama team, and only has one loss on the season – at Death Valley. Are you saying Wake is better than FSU? We’ll find out Thursday night. Let me know what team has DB’s as tall as Carr and Fagg – none. FSU is a good team – not great. They’ll be exposed, but not by a team with 6’4″ DB’s. I think you’d have to give our defense a little credit to stopping their rushing attack, but I doubt you’d do that.

Mr. O: Well, we know football’s last championship was 1979 and hoops was 1987. Didn’t baseball win the ACC one year in the early 1990s?

When was the last year womens hoop won an ACC championship?

I’m fairly sure our number of seasons without an ACC championship in the “big four” of womens and mens hoops, Football, and baseball is at the bottom of the ACC. I know VaTech, FSU, GaTech, Duke, UNC, Wake, and Maryland have a better record in this category because I can remember all of those teams winning one of those four championships since we have.

  7. PamlicoPack 10/09/2007 at 10:41 AM #

    T:

sorry you are frustrated by our abysmal level of play, but it is unnecessary to direct your frustration toward other posters. You want to play that crap, go over to the Pack Pride board. This is the place for realistic assessment, and the most realistic assessment at this point is that this team goes 2-10 this year.

^^I could change 10 plays in about 90% of our football games and claim we would “have a great chance” of beating that team.

Yes you could. Even though that’s not what I said, you supported my statement — So, what you’re saying is that I was correct — that’s being correct, not asinine.

That’s alot different than saying you have NO chance against a certain team — especially Wake Forest!! Mark it down – we have NO chance against Wake…Good thing you’re blog poster and not a coach, ’cause you don’t know that much about football.

  9. TNCSU 10/09/2007 at 10:48 AM #

I’m not living in a fantasy world, but I think the team has a chance to win a couple more games. We realistically have a chance to win every game from hear on out. I think UVa, Miami, and Maryland will be tough, but we have a good chance against EZU, UNC, and Wake.

  10. packpigskinfan23 10/09/2007 at 11:06 AM #

I think we have a chance against Miami, Wake, and UNC. ECU is gonna murder us. Didnt you guys see the UCF game this weekend? ECU gets 5 turnovers from the Knights and puts up 52 points. Now remind me again, how did we fare against the Knights?!

I think we win one more this year. MAYBE 2 more. We really arent as bad as some people here want to make us out to be… we just dont protect the ball, and get HORRIBLE calls made on us at the worst times.

  11. LRM 10/09/2007 at 11:07 AM #

Obviously, we have a CHANCE to win every game we play.

Realistically, based on what we’ve seen so far, it is highly unlikely we’ll win any more games.

There’s not a team left on our schedule we are better than. UVa, Carolina, and Maryland have each shown a lot of improvement. We haven’t.

  12. PacknSack 10/09/2007 at 11:08 AM #

I think some are too hard on Evans. When he has time to go through his reads, or does quick drops, he’s effective. When the line stops blocking and he has to run for his life or make super-quick decisions before plays develop then bad things happen. But it’s like that everywhere. He’s still pretty green; he’s going to get rattled. At least he doesn’t have Beck’s ‘screw it, I’ll just throw long’ mentality.

  13. waxhaw 10/09/2007 at 11:20 AM #

I have not seen Evans throw a consistent deep ball. I’d have to go back and look at film (which I’m not going to do) but it’s my perception that teams are able to stack the line due to Daniel not being able to stretch the field.

This hurts our run and the short passing game. We comple a lot of passes, but they are not as effective because everyone is up near the line of scrimmage.

Our only hope becomes missed tackles by the defense or a long drive which is extremely hard to sustain due to the predictablity of our offense and the occasional holding penalties, etc. that we can not overcome.

IMO Beck is a better long term option and hopefully he will learn how to limit the turnovers.

  14. Wulfpack 10/09/2007 at 11:33 AM #

ECU beats us in the same way all these others teams have. We will turn it over and they will score more than we are able to. It’s really just that simple.

This team is bad. Bad teams make bad plays. Do we have potential? Yes. But RIGHT NOW, and unless nothing changes, we are battling Duke for the crown as the worst team in the league. If you do not see that, then you have extremely rose colored glasses. We have been bad. There is no denying that.

Wake murdered FSU last year in Tally and went on to win the league. I know Wake isn’t the same team, and FSU is probably improved….it’s just too early to tell.

I don’t think it really matters who we are playing if we keep making these kind of mistakes. We are simply not good enough to beat anybody if we are going to beat ourselves.

  15. noah 10/09/2007 at 11:34 AM #

I’d be really pleased if we won another game this year. That would be a very pleasant surprise.

I keep reading (mostly on other boards) people saying that we have plenty of talent, certainly more than teams like UVa, Maryland and Wake. Could someone please show me where we are keeping this talent? Because I certainly don’t see it along NC State’s sidelines.

Or maybe they were talking about “talent” as a euphemism for a pretty girl and I just missed the joke?

  16. TNCSU 10/09/2007 at 11:34 AM #

Good post, Waxhaw. Evans has to get his 1st or 2nd read – if he goes to his third read, and it’s a deep route, there no way he can throw it. He does well when his first read is open, because he’s fairly accurate. He does throw off his back foot too much, though.

3 1/2 days to Basketball Season!

  17. Mr O 10/09/2007 at 11:38 AM #

Noah: I can’t figure out where this “talent” that people mentions is either. We are going to be underdogs in every single game we play the rest of the season and that will make us underdogs in 11 of our 12 games.

But we are supposed to have talent.

  18. TNCSU 10/09/2007 at 11:40 AM #

^^We are simply not good enough to beat anybody if we are going to beat ourselves.

Now THAT I agree with! As far as talent, I would have to name Blackman and Dunlap. We’ve got some good DL’s, too. Of course, if you count our IR (Hill, Baker, Brown) we’re even more talented – for whatever that’s worth.

  19. Mr O 10/09/2007 at 11:55 AM #

Sorry, should be underdogs in 10 of our 11 division 1 games.

Anyone know the longest division 1 losing streak in Wolfpack history? If I had to guess, then our currrent streak of 12(with no end in sight) has to be the record.

With a record losing streak in football, the lack of ACC titles discussed above, and basketball coaching circus that Fowler led, I cannot figure out how Lee Fowler was just offered a contract extension until 2013.

Where did the Board of Trustees think Lee was going to go if they didn’t give him long-term extension? The scary thought for me is that his extension will take him into Sid’s 7th year and TOB’s 6th year. You know what happens very often in years 5-7 of coaches at NC State?

I’m not living in a fantasy world, but I think the team has a chance to win a couple more games.

Do “Little” and “none” qualify as two chances?

  21. Mike 10/09/2007 at 12:20 PM #

We cannot beat Wake, nor could we beat Dook. Thankfully we dont play Dook. Dook scored 36 on Wake, shows flaws in Wake’s game, but Wake was way up and left the stadium. Dook then started scoring against the open field, which is something I dont think we can do.

We had a huge discussion last year about 24, and the 24 is still a mythical number that we cannot reach. Until we can get to 24, case closed, we will not win any more games.

  22. Mike 10/09/2007 at 12:22 PM #

Also, remember in the spring and preseason – we kept hearing about our DB’s picking passes and how much improved they were? There was the Q – is it the DB’s or the QB’s? NOw I think we know the answer.

My real question having watched our DB’s drop several potential INT’s is how did they catch the ball in spring and preseason? They sure cant now.

  23. TNCSU 10/09/2007 at 12:22 PM #

^^Do “Little” and “none” qualify as two chances?

    Little does — none doesn’t.

  24. RedTerror29 10/09/2007 at 12:31 PM #

Our recruitings classes have been ranked in the ACC by rivals as below:

    2007 – 10th
    2006 – 9th
    2005 – 7th
    2004 – 4th

That probably puts us at around 7th/8th in the ACC in terms of talent right now (before injuries to key personnel). Of the teams possibly below us, two benefit from good, consistent coaching (BC & Wake) and two aren’t on the schedule (GT & Duke).

    Look at this:

    http://collegefootball.rivals.com/content.asp?SID=1144&CID=723775

we really must suck. We’re ranked worse than Duke.
