Wolfpack Mistakes Wearing On O’Brien

N.C. State coach Tom O’Brien is beginning to show the strain.

O’Brien came off tired, disappointed, irritated and — for the first time this season — a bit dispirited Saturday. The Wolfpack had lost to Florida State 27-10. Tailback Andre Brown had suffered a broken foot and was lost for the year.

The Wolfpack (1-5, 0-3 ACC) outplayed the Seminoles much of the first half and trailed just 17-10 after three quarters at Doak Campbell Stadium. But again, there were too many turnovers, penalties and mistakes that could not be overcome.

With the score tied 10-10 late in the first half, the Pack was called for an illegal block, then had an interception in the red zone. Another interception was returned for an FSU touchdown, and a roughing-the-punter penalty against State set up another FSU score. A holding penalty wiped out a long kickoff return by Jamelle Eugene.

By game’s end, the Pack had four turnovers, nine penalties and allowed six sacks. What could have been a close game wasn’t.

“Once again, we didn’t give ourselves a chance,” O’Brien said. “We played so hard, but we still don’t play smart enough. … As I told the team, we’re still making the dumb mistakes that we’ve got to stop making.”

“In basketball, Carr might have been called for an over-the-back foul against Morgan. Instead, it was a touchdown.”

Like it’s not a foul in football too?????

    jo2g5,

i saw it. i complained about it earlier on a different thread.

So the new coach came off after saturdays storm delayed dissapointment of a loss with a frown. Poor Chip had to fly down and sit through the game and then didn’t get an “aw shucks, things didn’t go too well” speech from TOB. Is it decent reporting to surmise that TOB is lettting the job get to him?

Frustration is a healthy human emotion. What transpired between Chip Alexander and former Wolfpack coach Amato could be called anything but healthy. It may have been useful though, and Alexander could be tipping off that he misses some of that dysfuntional magic following another State collaspe.

Perhaps TOB is unsure of how to take all the season ending injuries. As a head coach you are reassured that following any play, any game result you can look into your players eyes and tell them that there is more work to be done and we’ll take it on together. Not so with a season ending injury. The coach can tell you the team is behind you 100%, but the reality is that your “new” head coach is an MD and your new teamates are the others out with season ending injuries. It’s the nature of the game, and it’s harsh. TOB and the remaining players that can go on have to start preparing for the next game now.

Look for Alexander or any other N&O sports “journalist” that continues to draw the short straw and get stuck covering State to continue debunking TOB whenever they feel like it. A Navy Midshipmen, a Marine officer, Welsh assitstant, and major college program builder has no place letting his guard down in their eyes.

So can anyone remember a grimmer fall sports season for Wolfpack athletics across the board? Golf won a tournament, and Cross country as always are picked at the top of the ACC. All the other sports (volleyball, FB, mens and womens soccer) are 0-for-the-ACC, a collective 0-15-1 in ACC play (M. Soccer, FB each 0-3, W. Soccer 0-2-1, volleyball 0-7)

Fun stat of the day: Wake Forest has as many defensive touchdowns (6) as State has passing touchdowns.

  8. dbo2874 10/08/2007 at 5:58 PM #

fun stat of the day, in our last 3 games against wake, their defense has scored 22 points against us (3 TD and 2 safeties)

O’Brien has a right to feel down. They actually played their best football of the season for about 29 minutes. Then we self-destruct on a sure scoring drive to end the half, then come back out and fumble the ball, on a the next play give up a pick six, then we get hosed on two bad calls on consecutive plays– the jump kick into Bowen’s chest by FSU’s punter, and then the no-call on Greg Carr going over the back of our CB to make a catch. And to top it all off, we give up a muffed pooch kick on a kickoff.

There’s still a lot of work to do here.

I want to see burke and this russell wilson kid get some time at QB I was at the clemson game and watched this wilson kid warm up. he is short but he has got a good arm and great mobility from what I understand. It can’t get any worse, why not get a mobile QB in there and give teams somethign they haven’t seen from state in a long time. Especially since the loss of our RB’s and how awful our OL is. That can take away from the lack of talent up front.

  11. RabidWolf 10/08/2007 at 9:38 PM #

Gilio and Perez are either idiots or UNX appologists from hell—did everyone see the smart ass little statement they made in today’s Daily Tarhole errrr…..N&O?

“An NCSU ticket holder asked why we ‘never write anything nice’ about the Wolfpack. What if we didn’t write anything at all, does that count?

What?? Well, who cares what these two pole smokers say anyway? They probably work for the N&O (and are pissed off about it) because all the other fish wraps in the country could see right through them and immediately put their applications and resumes (such as they are) directly in the shredder. Maybe they should start writing for the Independent–they like to print idiotic drivel from jackasses like these two.

Where, oh WHERE is Olin Hannum?!?!?!

  13. Wolf-n-Atl 10/08/2007 at 10:42 PM #

Was Jamie Barnett the last qb we had that had mobility (not counting Olin who only came in for a play here or there)?

Maybe we should have run the wishbone, of course we don’t have many running backs left. Just think, Bobby Washington could have finally gotten some playing time!

  14. choppack1 10/08/2007 at 11:16 PM #

Barnett wasn’t that mobile – at least by the time he was done here. I don’t know if he was as mobile as Terry Harvey or Charles Davenport.

In spite of the ridicule I’ll be subjected to, the only hope I have is if R. Wilson gets some snaps. When you look at Evans stats – they aren’t horrid…but then when you watch him play w/ your own eyes, you realize he can’t make the necessary throws and he doesn’t throw well on the run.

There must be something very wrong with Burke at this point in his development to not have played a series here or there. I’ll trust the coaches on this one.

  17. PackerInRussia 10/09/2007 at 3:19 AM #

It could be worse. At least we’re not the Bills whose defense/special teams give you 5 INTs and 3 touchdowns and you still lose!

  18. LRM 10/09/2007 at 7:30 AM #

^^Burke has played a couple series. His first (and only) pass against Clemson was an INT so bad it brought immediate credibility to his standing as a State QB.

But I agree there’s something wrong with him. It’s called being really bad.

  19. RochesterRedWolf 10/09/2007 at 8:24 AM #

What irks me a little, at least ive noticed lately, is that when there’s a QB change, the espn announcers are oblivious to it. Burke actually played the last series against FSU, he gave it off to Underwood a couple of times, who btw, had one really nice run for about 8 yds.

I went back and looked on Rivals and Scout. Marcus Stone was rated the #3 dual-threat QB in the country and Matt Ryan was rated #25 pro-style QB. It may not look like it to the avg fan, but we’ve got some good coaches here boys.

This is why Charest was not offered and Mike Glennon was even though they are both rated about the same.

vtPackFan, thanks so much for posting that little blurb about TOB/Bible philosophy on evaluating talent, it all makes more sense now, where did u see that article btw? But i think we finally have a coach who can evaluate talent, and who has a freakin system. Wasnt’ this the first year though that the football coaches have actually had a camp so that they could evaluate talent before they made an offer? I know Amato had camps but I don’t think it was for true talent evaluation and situational analysis.

How does Fowler keep his job? Honestly? If fowler had his way Amato and Herb would still be here. He insults the fans, he has no vision and the teams have gotten worse under his leadership. Throw in the 3 month embarrassment that was the bball coaching search and how does he continue to “earn” a paycheck?

There is NO WAY he will ever get a better job so he will not leave voluntarily. Which begs the question, how do we get rid of this stone around our neck?

  21. PamlicoPack 10/09/2007 at 9:31 AM #

The poor performance of most of our non-revenue sports is a continuing source of bewilderment, particularly since we have now eliminated the facilities gap with the rest of our league (with the exception of certain sports, such as swimming), and are fully funded for scholarships in all sports. With the sole exception of cross country (the one sport in which we are a perennial power) all of the sports we do well in (wrestling, rifle, gymnastics) are sports in which very few ACC teams participate (I think wrestling is 6 out of 12 ACC schools; gymnastics doesn’t even have an ACC championship because not enough ACC schools participate).

Here’s a real trivia question: when was the last time we won an ACC championship in a sport in which all ACC schools participate OTHER than cross country? (by my count that includes hoops, FB, baseball, womens hoops, volleyball, mens and womens tennis, mens and womens track, and womens swimming)

Our mediocre showings in outdoor track and field in particular irk me…if we have world class distance runners in our CC teams, we should be able to focus most of our recruiting efforts for spring track on sprinters and field events. We were perennial champs in the 70s and 80s, but last year’s third place showing by the mens team was (I believe) our best showing in years…

^^I see us as having no chance whatsoever against Wake and Maryland.

What??? This was posted yesterday, and I’m just catching up, but come on… Duke just scored 36(?) points on Wake, and we have NO chance?? I really have to question some of the posters on here about their knowledge of football. Without the turnovers and a couple of bad penalties/no calls, we have a great chance of beating a good FSU in Tallahassee. We aren’t as bad as some of you guys are making us out to be. A few breaks, and a few less turnovers, and we are more than capable of winning a few games.

  23. LRM 10/09/2007 at 9:57 AM #

The bad breaks are what makes bad teams bad. Good teams don’t turn the ball over.

LSU is #1 for a reason.

“Gilio and Perez are either idiots or UNX appologists from hell”

i could be wrong but i thought i heard Gilio say he was a state grad. it might have been joe ovies, but it was one or the other and neither ever have anything good to say about state.

  25. RochesterRedWolf 10/09/2007 at 10:03 AM #

Gilio said on one of those “talking with tudor” pieces that he was a state grad.
