Weird Blog Post on WRAL.com

WRAL.com is starting to venture into different waters. It holds the rights to NC State broadcasts and marketing, and it has also started a sports radio station. So it is weird to see poorly written articles slamming the Wolfpack.

The problems that State has are surely one of talent and depth but c’mon if Stanford can beat USC, can’t State hang with ECU? Tom O’Brien certainly knew what he was in store for when he came to State but this? I don’t buy it. He couldn’t have thought that this rebuilding project could be so tough. He’d never admit it but these are indeed tough times for a football fandom who never envisioned this at the beginning of the decade. These were supposed to be the “contention years” as Chancellor Fox once said. The only contention lately has been for worst program not only in the ACC but in the state of North Carolina.

    Lee Fowler. Enough said.

The program TOB built is ranked number 4 in the country.

I don’t know who the hell Dan Mason is, but his post is pure slanted tripe. Every word is positioned as a slam clawing for controversy.

Leave the Gregg Doyel impressions at home Dan.

    “Can’t State hang with ECU?”

Last time I checked the game hasn’t been played yet. I don’t necessarily expect us to win but I do expect us to “hang”…I have no idea what that means anyways.

Stanford was a 40 point underdog and did more than just “hang” with USC. We are a 5 point dog. Don’t think the comparison is really adequate and don’t know what the point is.

UNC is 2-5. Granted, they have shown improvement and been in some close games against good teams, but they are 2-5. I don’t see how that puts them in any sort of lofty perch as compared to us. That’s just plain ole’ bias.

^ agreed, who the hell is dan mason???

    synopsis of that article:

unc football is inspired, ecu football is inspired, ncsu sucks, when is basketball season.

way to bring in a new and different perspective WRAL, congrats

Dan Mason is one of the morning show hosts on 99.9 The Fan.

WPTF radio this morning featuring what’shisface discussed how NC State fans were already saying TOB isn’t the right man for the job.

Now, granted I stay off the Scout sports forum the way asthmatics avoid cigar bars, but I haven’t heard one NC State fan doubt TOB as the right man for the job. Give Michaelangelo only a handful of crayons and maybe someone would doubt he’s the right man to paint the Sistine Chapel. Point is, I think most if not all State fans realize the horrid personnel problems TOB faces this year, and that no coach could be winning with the gang right now.

beo, just browse the scout board a bit. Some people are lost. For once, I can give the holes credit, there is a reason it’s called crackride. About 50% of them make us look loony.

Trolling internet boards of material? That’s bad, even for sports talk radio.

Glad to see that I’m not missing anything by tuning into the WSJ report on XM in the mornings…

“but I haven’t heard one NC State fan doubt TOB as the right man for the job.”

They’re out there. Sadly. I don’t think they representa sizeable portion of our fan base, but I think they DO represent one of the more vocal portions of our fan base.

We’re gonna win some games the back half of this season, and the story will change. Yeah, we can hang with ECU.

  13. tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc 10/17/2007 at 11:53 AM #

It will take a couple of years for TOB to get the program back to the point where MOC had it.

Sounds to me like an inflammatory blog written solely to make it to message boards and drive site hits for where it originated. They’re trying to do a lot of new things at WRAL and if few people know about them, then they have to either blow a ton of coin on an advertising blitz or go cheap with a good old “Internel Buzz” campaign. Either that or the poster has lost a lot of money this season betting State to beat the spread.

Nothing much to see here…a half ass message board post that gets posted to a blog is still a half ass message board post.

  17. PAPacker 10/17/2007 at 12:06 PM #

What an insubstantial trend-chasing piece of tripe. Not an insight in the whole post. Dear WRAL, if you’re looking to get State fans interested in your blog, get someone to write it who can get beyond surfer speak.

We have been competitive in most games up until the 4th or until we decide to start giving the ball to the other team in multiples.

Beowulf: You obviously haven’t to Pack Pride. I could MAYBE understand some questions about TOB if we hired from a mid-major. I can’t figure out questions about TOB with his former program sitting at #3 in the nation.

Unfortunately, we have many fans who lack any ability to reason.

Like I said, I avoid that forum. It is, as Monty Python’s Arthur said about Camelot, “a silly place.”

To judge State fans by it would be about as rational as judging WRAL’s news coverage by quoting some little dullard at the State Fair wearing a Greg Fischel mask.

Does the wolfpack nation want TOB fired? No.

However, I’ll ask this board – are you guys happy w/ the way we’ve played thus far? Is this team exceeding your expectations?

I know my answer. There can be nuance and degrees to these things. If/When TOB has built our football team into what we want it to be, this season will be nothing more than a speck in our memory. But that doesn’t mean we have to be happy w/ what we’ve seen thus far.

I didn’t expect us to be almost dead last in TO margin. (Of course, I might have if I was told that Beck would win the starting job in the second game of the season.) I didn’t expect UCF to take it to the house on the first play from scrimmage of the year.

The second half of the year will hopefully yield improvement. Maybe I’m jaded because it’s evident to me the enthusiasm in place in Chapel Hill right now. When I saw them play Miami, they did everything right – they were the epitome of discipline and execution – and I’m terrified of what Butch will be able to do in a couple of years.

I guess I’m just disappointed in the our own execution. And you know what, I don’t think that’s crazy or irrational to have expected a little better. I’d expect it w/ Chuck, but that’s precisely why he was canned.

Once again, I want to emphasize, TOB gets a chance to get his guys in here before any fair position can be taken. But am I happy right now w/ what I’ve seen on the field for the first half of the season – no.

Surely WRAL has editors, even for its blogs.

When I write a column for this site, I re-read it several times and I have someone else proof it for errors, if for no other reason than I don’t want to look like a bigger idiot than what I probably am already.

  23. RedTerror29 10/17/2007 at 1:33 PM #

I’d compare this season in football to last season in basketball. If we end it on a high note everyone will forget how bad it was in the beginning and middle. Halfway through the first season I wasn’t expecting much improvement. If we struggle in year 3 though – that’s a very bad sign.

  24. Rick 10/17/2007 at 1:36 PM #

The Scout forum’s are as messed up as a Michael J Fox bobblehead doll.

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again – complete pass for on-field results until Year Three. Complete pass. That means we could lose 84-0 on Saturday, and I won’t point the finger at Coach O’Brien.

I know what he did at Boston College, and there is zero reason to believe he can’t make NC State AT LEAST that good, given appropriate time. It’s not like he won and built a program at a lower level – he did so in the same fucking conference (well, half that way – the other half in a conference at least as good as the current ACC), at a school where it is HARDER to bring in premium athletes.

All this season has done is reinforce what a shitty job Chuck Amato did.

In times like these, we should reflect upon the wisdom of George Carlin:

    – Some people are just fucking stupid.

    – Think about how stupid the average American is. Then realize…half of them are dumber than that.
