UNC/NC State Kickoff Set For Noon

Will UNC ever play a night game at Carter Finley? In fact, when was the last time UNC at NC State was a night game?

I remember one time during the MOC/Mack beatings we played in the rain on ESPN2 during the fair.

Off the subject, but ESPN highlighted Daniel Evans performance against UVA as one of its performances of the week then had Donald Bowens game as one of the candidates for performance of the week to be voted on by fans of the show. This was on their inside the polls show that comes on at 7 on Monday nights.

Boo!!!! How bad does the suck?? This is the equivalent of giving the Heels 6 points.

I think the last time we played the Heels at night in Raleigh was in 1997. Since then, we’ve had 3 home games…2001, 2003, 2005 – I believe all of these have been noon kickoffs.

The almighty God of television must be served. LFS wants to put it on and picked the game.

I bet even if it weren’t on TV at all, it would be a 1pm kickoff because TOB has said in the past that he prefers early afternoon games.

We’ve already paid our money, besides. What WE want matters very little in the long run, LTRs saw to that.

Anyone know the rules for game selection?

Stuff like this is why we have no business having Swofford as commish of the conference. I’m sure there’s nothing inappropriate going on, but it should look bad.

“Stuff like this is why we have no business having Swofford as commish of the conference”

stuff like this quote is why pinhead conspiracy theorists won’t ever be taken seriously.

Why is playing the game at noon like giving the Heels 6 points? They played at noon this past week and were awful against the Deacons…the real problem with playing on LFS is that everyone watching at home has to listen to “Doc” Walker blather on incoherently for 3.5 hours.

I, luckily, have a ticket, and won’t have to listen to Walker and the Hog.

For ACC games, ABC picks first and then ESPN/ESPN2 choose games. Raycom picks next and ESPNU gets the last pick. Any game that is not picked by the above networks can end up on ESPN 360. When ACC teams play out of conference on the road other networks can pick up games such as CSTV for the ECU game.

“The almighty God of television must be served.”

Damn those capitalists! When will they learn that football belongs to the people! To the masses! Not from some billion-dollar corporation that wants to shower NC State with cash. We will not be sold!

I say we blame this one on the horse racing police officers.

Frank Manor – any fool knows that C-F is more lively during an evening game that it is during a noon one. It’s a much more intimidating environment, it’s much louder and a more difficult place to visit. Selfishly, I’d prefer not to get up at 6 AM and leave the house by 7 to get to the game. But hey, I guess I’m the only one disappointed about the kick-off time.

I was wondering when the ACC picked because here’s the other stuff on the plate:
    Clemson – Wake – (noon, too – ESPN2)
    FSU-VaTech – ABC – 3:30pm
BC-UMd – ABC – 8:00pm (I think this may have been the thing that really screwed us. And what a gamble for the networks.)
    UVa-Miami – ESPNU/2 – 7:15 PM

I think our game is the stinker out of those. Now, if those if those games were picked first, I can understand. However, I can’t believe than an NC-State-Keroliner game would have more regional interest than any of the above.

    Oh well.

Folks, take a step back from the ledge. Both teams will have a losing record going into this game (although I am very optimistic that we will have a great chance at getting to .500 with this win). In previous years, it would have been really tough to get this game on TV in the first place.

Fortunately, with all of the channels that carry football on Saturdays now, damn near every Division I game does get televised.

When was the last time? I don’t know. Some old timers may know, but the best I can do is ’97 when we played in C-F. That may have been a late afternoon game and finished at night. Going back to ’77 on memory alone, I’d say all were afternoon games.

Nobody likes the noon kickoff. I understand, I’m with you. We have to suck it up and get there on time, be loud and cheer our team to victory. Period.

  14. choppack1 10/29/2007 at 11:36 PM #

blpack – 97 is the last night game in C-F vs. the Heels. Very good UNC team that year, I believe we lost 20-7. If memory serves correct, we were trailing 13-7 in the 4th quarter. I believe we scored on the first drive that year.

As much as this po’s me, it would piss me off more if we did this to ourselves. That sorry noon kickoff is just one of the perks of mediocrity. If even one of us was good this year, I have a feeling it might be different.

All right, everyone quit whining and evaluate this game as something other than a die-hard fan of one of the schools.

It wasn’t that long ago that State was lucky to have two non-bowl games televised anywhere. But today, a game between two teams with losing records is being regionally televised throughout the SE. Outside of NC, this game has less appeal than the World Series of Poker. Living in VA, I’m just glad that I won’t have to listen to it on the radio like I have for many of the State/UNC games.

The only chance that State has for a game to be televised any time other than noon, is for the game to be carried on ESPNU. Just face it and let’s not do this every week over the last month of the season.

The Wake game will likely be on ESPN/ABC as a rivalry game assuming Wake keeps winning. Especially if BC should stumble.

Va and Chop are right, when you’re not winning no one else wants to watch. The Maryland game may be on LFS. And being on ESPNU isn’t sparing us from playing at Noon on the road this week.

  17. PacknSack 10/30/2007 at 2:22 AM #

We can play the game at 6 a.m. for all I care as long as we win. Good teams get night games. Not games featuring more than twice as many losses as victories between the two combatants.

  18. FrankManor 10/30/2007 at 7:27 AM #

yep, the 97 game in the rain during the state fair was definitely at night…I was there and got soaked and ate inordinate amounts of food in a relatively close game, until the end.

I hate noon home games — strictly for tailgating reasons — but TV picks the game times and it’s not some big conspiracy against us. What’s really going to be embarrassing is having a entire empty sections in the first quarter after all the $hit we talk about Kenan.

I was a freshman during that last night home game in 1997. We spent the entire evening trying not to slide down the bank in a steady, cold rain. Ah, nostalgia.

  20. kool k 10/30/2007 at 8:51 AM #

Noon games do allow for a before and after tailgate experience.

^ That’s right, enjoy the game, and if we win, you’ll have more time to celebrate. A loss, and you’ll have plenty of time to drown your sorrows.

In November, I like noon kickoffs fine, b/c that’s likely the best weather window.

Reality check – this is a game between two losing teams. Why in the hell would it be a prime choice for night viewing (at least this year, seems like all good games played at night, except for 3:30 SEC game).

The MOC/Torbush “Hug Bowl” was a night game. I think it may have been the national Thursday night broadcast. I remember drinking heavily and swearing in the basement (kids were asleep).

  23. LRM 10/30/2007 at 9:45 AM #

1998 was the first game in Charlotte, Thanksgiving Saturday (loss)
1999 was the Hug Fest you refer to, an early November Thursday night (loss)
2000 was 3:30 ABC, in Chapel Hill (win)
2001 was noon Raycom, Raleigh (loss)
2002 was noon Raycom in C-H (win)
2003 was that 2:00pm untelevised crap in Raleigh (win)
2004 was 6:00pm local TV-only with one camera and Woody as the sound (loss)
2005 was noon Raycom in Raleigh (loss)
2006 was noon Raycom in C-H (loss)

97 was Brown’s last year at UNC , they were 11-1.

  25. PamlicoPack 10/30/2007 at 10:20 AM #

I’m fine with noon games in November…but I think I’d rather forgo the revenue than have to be broiled alive like at those early Wofford and Clemson games this year…Just say NO to noon games in September. I wish they’d stick a “fan safety” clause in the TV contracts…Somebody dying of heat stroke and sueing the hell out of the ACC and the school might do the trick…
