TOB Obsession Continues @ BC

Link

For Boston College’s sake…I sure hope that the Eagles are competing for National Championships while dominating the Wolfpack in years 2009, 2010 and 2011. If not, they are going to have a hard time explaining how their program would be lower than it is today and how State’s would be higher.

I’m just sayin’….

“Results in 2007 should mostly be put on the current coach.”

ATL Eagle – That’s simply not true. It’s very difficult to tell how good a coach will do long term based on the first season. If first season were all about the coach, then Larry Coker would have been the greatest coach ever – after all – he won, what his first 22 games?

Each situation is different. Jags walked into a much better situation than TOB. However, I won’t go as far to say each coach gets a total pass. Certainly, right now, you guys are happier w/ your results on the football field than we are. Of course, 6 years ago we were 4-0 or 4-1 at this w/ a true freshman QB. We all see how that ended. In basketball, Sidney had to coach a team w/ 1 returning starter – and that starter was injured most of the year. How would Sendek have done – who knows – we would have had Werner and Larry Davis – and Atsur probably wouldn’t have pulled anything running that plodding offense.

This story has just begun. I guarantee you this much, even if Jags wins a title this year, that will mean very little if you guys aren’t having success in his 4,5, and 6th year of coaching.

I have to admit though, as a State fan, I’m more than a little concerned about how it looks if Jags wins the title his first year. After all, it’s not like TOB didn’t have the chance to win championships at BC – on more than one occasion, his squad was tripped up by a mediocre team.

“BTW, and I don’t mean to monopolize the post, but does anybody know where to find a copy or tape of that ‘86 State-USC game?”

Not possible. It wasn’t a TV game.

The only footage of “the catch” that were taken were done by WRAL. For some reason, the coach’s film that is usually taken from atop the field house wasn’t done. Apparently, the film guys left early, not anticipating the finish.

WRAL had a guy in perfect position to shoot it for the news and Sheridan’s show ran that clip Sunday morning. WRAL would not have saved it. Lost for the ages.

Even if BC wins the ACC this year, it doesn’t necessarily reflect bad on TOB. Mack Brown, Roy Williams, and even Coach K went years with outstanding talent before winning the “big one.” Even TOB himself said this was his best team ever. Not everyone can win immediately with inferior talent like Jimmy V!

packgrad – That wasn’t V’s first team and he took over for a guy who won the big one.

I’m not saying it reflects badly on him – it just looks bad that he couldn’t win it when all he had to do was beat a bad Syracuse team to win a title outright.

^^^^^”Even our success this year will be largely attributed to Herb Sendek recruiting five of our top six players on the roster.”

With all due respect; no it will not.

that BC is a bad fit geographically is with out question. I just want to beat my head against a wall about it.
As to TV, and why greater Boston is seeing State & FSU, while Maryland & Va is not – I could be wrong here, but isn’t this an affiliate choice? Local stations get to pick their feed, unless its a “national” broadcast? I haven’t looked to see what we are getting in the greater Birmingham region (I am on the road most of this saturday) but I can’t imagine it will be State.

A good coach can do great things if there are players to work with.
    A bad coach won’t.
A good coach can do little when there are few to no players to work with.
    A bad coach won’t either.
Seems real darn simple to me.
Sid is a good coach getting incredible things out the pretty good hand he picked up.
TOB just has very little to work with.

“Results in 2007 should mostly be put on the current coach.”

You cannot seriously believe this. I can think of numerous examples of coaches who looked good (or bad) the first year or two after a change because of the players they inherited.

Actually, Lowe is an example: we did not make the NCAA tournament and finished near the bottom of the league even though Lowe did a great job coaching.

  9. Cosmo96 10/05/2007 at 2:42 PM #

^Exactly. He inherited a team that lost five of the top six players from the year before, and that sixth player was injured throughout the season. There are only so many things that coaching can fix right away.

On the other hand, like O’Brien, his recruiting results have been impressive so far. That’s where these coaches will be able to make their mark–recruiting and building for the future. The results of recruiting to a system and coaching that system will pay dividends down the road.
