DBR: Featherston On NC State Hoops

So where do you rank them? If you believe all the optimism about the newcomers at the point, it makes sense to project the Pack at second or third in the league.

But it’s dangerous to believe that optimism. You have to understand that one lesson you learn about more than 30-plus years of ACC Operation Basketball is that EVERYBODY is optimistic at this time of year. Every problem will be solved, either by a freshman underrated by the experts, or by a veteran who just hasn’t gotten a chance to show what he can do yet.

Nope. Clemson has never won in Chapel Hill — they’ve lost 52 in a row since the 1925-26 season.

Yes, Klem has never won in Chapel Hill…. something 0-45….

I am trying to temper my hopes until I see our pg’s play and improvement on the defensive end (which I hope will come with added depth and more experience).

I think Thompson will be a very good player for unc. He impressed me everytime I saw him play last year, but he is not as good of a compliment to hansbrough as wright was.

I think it will help the whole defense to have a quick pg. As much as I loved Atsur, he got beat on the drive A LOT last year (some of that due to injury) and our whole defense would collapse as a result. Singletary, Lawson and Vasquez just killed us last year driving to the basket.

And looking at the schedule, there is a pretty good chance we start out 0-2 in the ACC…first two are at UNC and at Clemson. We start out going 2-0 in those games, then count me in on the bandwagon. We will know by mid January whether this has the chance to be a “special” season. When your conference opener is on national TV on Saturday afternoon against the consensus top pick in your conference, then you have an immediate opportunity to let the entire country know whether, in fact, the Pack is back…

But putting those games to the side, the real must win games on the schedule (if we want a top 4 finish and avoid Thursday at the ACC tourney) are the home games against Miami, Georgia Tech, Wake, Virginia Tech and Florida State. If we don’t go 5-0 in those games, we’ll have to “make it up” by stealing one we really aren’t supposed to win (at Duke, at UNC, for example, and this year I’ll put at Clemson in that category).

It does not take long for Cedar to ruin a great thread.

Fortunately, this site is not the home page of the Church of HwSnbn.

His chief and only acolyte is here on our good graces and for our continued enjoyment (such as with posts on the subject of “oh my goodness oh my goodness what would a duke fan say?!?” — lmao), but that can be reversed at any time.

^”he came into a great situation & is making the most of it”

6-7 scholarship players is a great situation. That’s why Barns and Calimari and all the others decided they wanted the position before we turned them down. If the sitaion was so great, why the hell did we every have a desire for a new coach to begin with?

^”It does not take long for Cedar to ruin a great thread.”

For real Rick. I normly stay away from post like the one I’m typing now, but come on Cedar. What the heck is wrong with you? Enough is enough. Can we get rid of packgrad93?

    Thank you.

Do not underestimate the size of the questionmark we have at PG this year.

We are hoping for one or more players to overachieve at PG.

On papaer, UNC’s backup, Frasor, would start for us at PG this year.

  10. primacyone 10/25/2007 at 2:38 PM #

^It’s a big questionmark. The counter is that any of the three have got to better than the one’s we tried during Astur’s absence last year.

  11. Rick 10/25/2007 at 3:04 PM #

IN no way am I diminishing the need for a PG. I think it is obiovus how important positions are in bball.

But there are many counters to the PG argument
    1) We have three posibilities two of which have had significant coaching by our staff
    2) We have experience across the board this year. Last year our injured PG was the sole player wiht experience.
    3) We haev players that can create on the offensive end. We will not require the PG to do that (although it would be nice). He essentially has to get he ball up the court, play good D and be some kind of offensive threat.

  12. PamlicoPack 10/25/2007 at 3:05 PM #

The conventional wisdom seems to be (1) Degand has been practicing with the team for over a year and a half now, so it isn’t like he just arrived on the bus; and (2) Monty Towe and Sid were darn good PGs….if any staff could get a PG ready to compete, they can. I’ve seen remarkably LITTLE actual analysis of the three candidates in the preseason coverage by the mainstream media so far…have I missed anything? I don’t think I recall ever seeing a team with such a gaping hole at PG ranked in the top three in the ACC preseason…I’ve just been assuming they knew something I didn’t…I hope I’m right…

You would think he would be more concerned about what other Pack fans think of him but alas…

“That’s why Barns and Calimari and all the others decided they wanted the position before we turned them down. ”

you don’t think the NCSU head bball coach is a great situation with a core of talented young players?

  15. packgrad93 10/25/2007 at 3:09 PM #

“We have experience across the board this year. Last year our injured PG was the sole player wiht experience.”

    Grant had experience too.

  16. PamlicoPack 10/25/2007 at 3:12 PM #

Hey, what about Trevor Ferguson…he was touted by some of you at about this time last year as someone who could spell Atsur, but we quickly learned he wasn’t the answer…Is he likely to see much playing time? He looks to have bulked up a little from his 2007-08 pic on gopack.com (and acquired a couple of Dennis Horner type tattoos), although his weight is only listed as 185.

    ^packgrad93,

Do you really believe that coming into July/August of last year, the new coach entered a “great” situation.

Roy Williams entered a “great” sitution. If a new coach was to enter our program right now, that would be a “great” situation.

But when Sidnely Lowe entered, it was far from a great situation. So far from it, he was darn lucky and darn skilled to pull out of it. Hell, even with the success he had, we still finished 10th in the league last year.

So to answer your question. No. No, I would not even come close to considering what Sidney Lowe came into last year to be a “great” situation.

And that point aside, why in the hell do you continue to be such an antagonist on this board?

  18. Rick 10/25/2007 at 3:18 PM #

    “Grant had experience too.”

Very little and he was playing at a position in which he had ZERO experience.

tferg, wont even sniff the court this year unless he starts hitting tre’s like its going out of freaking style

  21. happypackdad 10/25/2007 at 3:29 PM #

Sid didn’t have many players, but he did have some talent.

  22. packgrad93 10/25/2007 at 3:32 PM #

    from gopack:

“NC State’s next men’s basketball coach should place a call to Herb Sendek and say “thank you.” He should thank Sendek for leaving for Arizona State, thus opening up one of the most attractive jobs in college basketball. He should also thank Sendek for abandoning his office in the beautiful new Dail Basketball Complex, a facility that has been operational for only one year. But most of all, the new coach should thank Sendek for building a program that has been winning on a consistent basis, while also maintaining a squeaky clean image. Very few coaches get an opportunity such as this. “

I clicked on the username. It took me to “TheEyeCreature’s” site on you-tube. That explains a lot. TheEyeCreature / Cedar – are they one in the same? Thanks for the hint!

^Thanks for your excellent copy and paste technique cedar.

Where the heck in there does it say Sidney Lowe entered a “great situation”???????????????

TOB entered a really great opportunity. A greater opportunity than what even Herb Sendeck left. But he sure as hell entered one “shitty situation”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Again I ask: Why in the hell do you continue to be such an antagonist on this board?

  25. packgrad93 10/25/2007 at 3:39 PM #
