FBall Implosion Getting Worse

On the same day that NC State released an updated injury report that serves to rub salt in our wounds by now including our starting quarterback in addition to the previous injuries to our starting running back, tight end and offensive lineman…we have learned that three scholarship players are no longer with the team – Levin Neal, Nate Franklin and LaMarcus Bond.

After watching Levin Neal lose his job and Nate Franklin punt this year…I guess we shouldn’t be too concerned as TOB now has additional scholarhships to distribute in what has been a stellar recruiting effort, thusfar.

How many football players does NC State currently have on scholarhip? and what is the distribution by class of these players?

Earth to high school stars and JUCO linemen we have plenty of playing time available!!! Come on down!!!

Mr O – I think it’s fair to hold Fowler to the standard you mention above. However, I don’t think ANY AD in the country fires Amato after year 6. Can you imagine the meltdown – especially if this was how we started last year w/ a new coach after the Wolfpack nation perceived the firing unfair?

Noah – regarding Wilson – are you basing your opinion on the fact that coaches have seen him play and we haven’t or are you basing it on first hand accounts?

My opinion on Wilson is based on the stats I’ve seen from the scrimmages and what someone who has seen him practice says. If there was no evidence he wasn’t better than the others, I would be resigning myself to the revolving doors of INTs, fetal position sacks, underthrown passes and 5 yard dumps that we’ve seen from Evans and Beck. I do think that there’s the danger he’ll lose his confidence. There’s also the likelihood that he’ll face the immediate pressure that both Beck and Evans have faced too. I’m just looking for some hope…Beck and Evans don’t give me any.

My understanding is that Wilson didn’t put up those numbers against the same competition that the other QB’s did. He did it against the scout squad or the freshman squad or something similar.

madwolf92, doesn’t seem like there’s a whole lot of difference unfortunately between 1st team and scout team

There IS a difference between the first team and scout team. Neither of them are capable of winning a D1 game…but it’s the difference between being competitive and losing in a Cumberland/GT type fasion.

We’re not a bowl team with Harrison Beck or D. Evans. I think it’s extremely likely that we’re not one with Justin Burke and I think it is a statistical improbability that the fourth string QB, a true freshman who played for a small, private high school last year, is the difference between victory and defeat.

Personally, I’d rather we just took our lumps this year and lost whatever we were going to lose and redshirt everyone capable of being redshirted. That’s not entirely possible at a couple of positions because of injuries. I’d rather have a team in four years with a strong class of redshirt seniors.

I agree wholeheartedly with Noah – as much as it kills me to sit through this season. At least I am not in Raleigh, and could tune out completely if I choose to. We are bad this season, lets don’t consume everything in an attempt to make an awful season into something that’s only terrible.

I guess one of the hardest thing here is two-fold: We’ve been pretty good in football so this is a disappointment. second, Sid’s magical turn around of the basketball team. I know, I know – you can’t do that with football! But folks think and act on perceptions, not on reality – how they see and understand it. And El Sid has us pumped.

Nice article by D Glenn regarding recruiting from the 2003 class at BC -vs- NCSU. Nothing very new here, bt a more precise look at one season.

Here’s another thing to consider. Let’s look at NC State’s contributing seniors:

    N.C. State: Contributing Fifth-Year Seniors

Defensive end Martrel Brown — two-year starter
Left guard Kalani Heppe — two-year starter
    Linebacker Ernest Jones — starter
    Center Luke Lathan — starter
Linebacker James Martin — two-year starter
Linebacker LeRue Rumph — three-year starter
Tight end Marcus Stone — starter
Cornerback Jimmie Sutton — two-year starter

Okay, off that list, let’s pretend that the ACC had a waiver wire where you could release players and other people could claim them. Not taking into account scholarship numbers and roster space…would any of those guys get claimed by other teams?

i read a report by Sammy Batten and when he listed our 4th string QB which would be 3rd string now, it was someone i had never heard of and said “he’s the only other one on the roster”??? Either he made a mistake or they really are gonna redshirt RW (Russel Wilson in case you guys are getting confused over the abbreviations).

  9. RochesterRedWolf 10/03/2007 at 12:28 PM #

that’s a good point Noah, i don’t know if they’d even be on the two deep on any other teams…maybe Ernest and Martrel, i just haven’t followed enough of the other teams to know the personnel.

Which was one of the reasons i was so optimistic in the preseason because of what seemed like a good number of 5th year seniors, problem is, they are the ones who were indoctrinated by CTC the longest.

^^we are without a doubt the worst 1a football team in the country

I, for one, totally disagree. We are NOT playing well right now, but…we’ve lost to teams that are a combined 15-4. Our win was versus a respectable Wofford team that defeated ASU (which as we know defeated Michigan). We were down 6 points in the fourth quarter to one of the most explosive offenses in the nation — and we had 5 turnovers!!! You’re not going to beat a D-1 team (any) with 5 turnovers (unless they do the same thing!).

Again, we’re not playing well. Our offense has sputtered (no need to rehash the OL and QB, as I agree), but you are not going to win games when you turn it over. Note, our only win vs. Wofford is when they turned it over 3 times in their own territory…

Again, I’m not saying we’re going to a bowl this year, but to completely discount this team for the rest of the year — and especially next year — is way too premature in my opinion. I see some promise (and we do have some talent on this team), I do think we’ve got a good chance against ECU and UNC, and an opportunity for an upset against several others — if we DON’T turn the ball over!! As with most games in college football, the team goes as the QB goes, and so far, we’ve got alot of QB woes! I just hope the expectations placed on Glennon are too high, but I say he’s definitely got a chance to start alot of games at NC State.

    RochesterRedWolf…….

The fifth QB on the team behind Beck, Evans, Burke
and Wilson is Daniel Polk (from Cary, NC). He’s a soph I believe.
If Wilson is gonna retain redshirt status it mighta been Polk
who was mentioned as being behind Burke !

  12. choppack1 10/03/2007 at 1:17 PM #

MW and Noah – I think in one of the scrimmages he did that against the scout team. I’m not sure about the other. However, I’m not sure that Evans or Beck would do that against our scout team. Beck didn’t exactly set the world on fire vs. Wofford.

If we had QB play that was or becomes adequate, fine, put the redshirt on the young QB. However, from the report I heard, he may be our best option. And you know what, it’s easy for me to believe – regardless of where he played high school simply because both Beck and Evans thus far are fatally flawed, IMHO. I’d prefer to redshirt him too, but hopefully by 2011 we’ll have 2 adequate QBs we can turn to.

Regarding Glenn’s article – I’d really like to see the entire class for both schools. His entry seemed very subjective. I will say this, I’d take very OL BC has.

  13. RochesterRedWolf 10/03/2007 at 4:03 PM #

yeah, polk was who it was SixPack. I mean all we get to see are 2-deep lists, so i don’t know how to independently confirm that other than quitting my job and going and volunteering with the football team to wash jock straps or something

I agree with Noah about packing it in and doing what will be best for the program two or three years for now, even if it means playing walkons in order to preserve the redshirts of some of the frosh. We are the equivalent of the Major League Baseball team that is 18 games back at the All Star Break and starts to unload overpriced veterans in trade for promising rookies to develop in the farm system.

Noah_ The fifth year senior thing is scary indeed. Next year looks a little better:
    1) Anthony Hill- Gone
    2) DuJuan Morgan- Someone would want him
    3) Daniel Evans (and that other Evans kid who can put on muscle)- A legacy, like Flounder, so we would never be put up.
    4) John Bedics- Anyone…
    5) Jeremy Gray- Could it be for Track & Field
    6) Meares Green- Going once…
    7) Robbie Leonard- Have no back up FS so Mr. Leonard gets franchise tag.
    8) Bradley Pierson- I read in Wolfpacker that he has the second fastest 40 time on entire team. How fast is your punter LSU?
    9) John Raymond- ….anyone…
    10) Andrew Redfern- ….Buehler…
    11) Matthew White-….anyone?
    12) Keith Willis Jr- We know he has some boyz still up at Chestnut Hill that would like to hang.

Actually with Hill coming off a knee injury I think it’s safe to say next years 5th years have a lot of ground to cover to fill the might big shoes this years’ are leaving. What a mess.
