CBSSports.com: Costner, McCauley Make Top Big Man List

I have one final plea before concluding the CBSSports.com annual position rankings.

If you’re going to e-mail and insist Hasheem Thabeet should be on the list of the top 25 Bigs in the nation, fine, that’s a reasonable statement to make. But you can’t just tell me Thabeet has been snubbed. You have to also tell me who to drop from the list to make room for him, otherwise you’re merely telling me to add a 26th, 27th — or 44th, in some cases — player to a list that has only 25 spots

One of the most underated parts of these two are their FT shooting. Both have confident shots at the stripe and really good techique. if we move well w/o the ball, make the pass to the man in better position, and execute Sid’s playcalling, these two could make a living shooting free throws. It would also serve as a great way to nuetralize other bigs in the league.

Curious to only see State and UNX guys on these lists’ representing the ACC. There might be some unheralded talent out there, sort of like McAuley leading into last season. The big white dude from Wake is gone, Thorton gone, McBob, Thaddeus Young, Dudley, Williams, Wright, and on.

I hate to say it again, but just the simple fact that we now have players that can actually be labeled as “interior” or whatever type players is refreshing as all get out. Add to that the fact that they’ve finally been allowed play in their natural positions and are now being recognized as among the best in the nation, that’s just, well, what else needs to be said?

    Going fishing, redfred? 🙂

  4. redfred2 10/06/2007 at 10:31 AM #

Sorry Dr. B, I guess I need therapy.

  5. redfred2 10/06/2007 at 10:37 AM #

^I’d say about three or four years of “letting it all out” here on SFN should do the trick. What do you think, Doctor?

  6. DRW 10/06/2007 at 10:42 AM #

I’m really excited about basketball. Hope I’m not getting my hopes up for nothing.

  7. redfred2 10/06/2007 at 11:30 AM #

DRW, almost every preseason for years, I’ve looked at the lineup of players on the roster, gotten excited, then I thought…

I’m more excited now, it’s there, it will be guided and taught properly, and there is nothing else to worry or think about. It is going to be nothing but FUN!!!

  8. Dr. BadgerPack 10/06/2007 at 11:52 AM #

Red- just keep doin’ what you’re doin’, and I think you’ll be just fine.

It was stated last season….and will be stated all of this season….McCauley is a freaking MONSTER!!!

i wondor if hickson will take away PT from Mccauley. i hope he isnt a bust like scooter sherrill was. perhaps that was just misuse by sendek

You’re always going to have those McDonald’s All-American, highly recruited guys who come in and don’t live up to expectations. Even Duke has those, it’s just they average like 3 McDonald’s AA recruits a year, and the liklihood of all of them being busts is very small.
I don’t think Scooter Sherrill was a “bust” because of Sendek. It was mostly the front-court big men that seemed to under-perform because of the system.

  12. Todd 10/06/2007 at 1:48 PM #

“because of the system” … “because of Sendek”

    Same thing??

^I didn’t want to turn this into a Herb thread…

“I didn’t want to turn this into a Herb thread…”

I tried and apparently failed earlier, thanks for bailing me out. 🙂

Now, please everyone, continue along with the ” ” bashing.

Our ACC commissioner has joined Woody in the booth at halftime of the UNC/Miami game. *Isn’t that just special?*

BTW, 27-0 Heels leading at the half!!!???

  16. RabidWolf 10/06/2007 at 6:50 PM #

OF COURSE SWOFFORD JOINED THE UNX ANNOUNCERS!!

    1.) He’s a face-time media whore

2.) He wants UNX to win everything, all the time

3.) They’re probably going to discuss how to get State BB screwed because they are all TERRIFIED of Sid and the boys!

  17. RabidWolf 10/06/2007 at 6:51 PM #

OMFG…(also) a reference to “he who shall not be named” WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?!?!?!?!

  18. redfred2 10/07/2007 at 5:56 PM #

Rabid, considering point #3 on your list, they are now worried and motivated like they haven’t been since the Valvano days. We’ll witness their best efforts to chip away at anything even remotely thinking about, or even already wearing RED, from here on out. It will be more interesting than ever to see the locally trained talent in the media come to life with their *vague* twists and turns,…once AGAIN.

That all sounds dramatic, I know, but that’s just the way it is around here in a land where powder blue pixie dust dummy’s down the masses and is sprinkled all over everything you touch. If, or rather when, Lowe’s win/loss stats start to closely resemble our closest neighbor’s, unsubstantiated innuendo will rule the day. It’s inevitable, they cannot help themselves, and I cannot wait!

  19. RabidWolf 10/07/2007 at 6:53 PM #

Thank you, redfred, I was hoping I didn’t sound like one of those conspiracy theory nutjobs!! I wonder if the N&O will contract Golenprick to pen a book of lies about Sid and the ‘Pack after they bring home a national championship and completely shock and embarass the hated Tarholes.

  20. redfred2 10/07/2007 at 8:48 PM #

Actually, I was contemplating all of the subtle angles and ramifications, wondering about someone like Barry Saunders. Success in Raleigh could possibly prove to be a double edged sword for a guy like him. Nah, he’ll just say that Lowe may have just beat his favorite team, but he didn’t do it “for the right reasons”.

  21. redfred2 10/07/2007 at 8:53 PM #

    “beaten” his favorite team…

My grammar is terrible, but even I couldn’t let that one slide.

  22. Rick 10/08/2007 at 8:49 AM #

He had a UNC player in the top five of all three of his lists. I guess it is no shocker who he would pick to win the NCAA.

Good to see us getting pub. Bball season cannot get here fast enough.

Check out the gopack website. They are interviewing all the freshman BB players this week. Johnny Thomas was yesterday and Javi and Clayton Beard today. Beard is an especially well-spoken guy. He is a walk-on (guard) but may improve considerably now that he is focusing on only 1 sport. A nice guy in any case.

    I didn’t know SS was a bust.
