Lets hear it for ESPNU, making midnight madness available to 17 people.

    Dear Coach,

Based on previous experience, some suggestions:

    1. Don’t talk championships – too pretentious.
    2. Get rid of that red jacket – too flash.
    3. National championship ring? Fuggedaboutit.

Just listened to the entire Sidney Lowe press conference. It is 34 minutes, but well worth it. Have we ever had a coach who gives a better interview?

About the only knock might be that he is too open in answering some questions, but it is a refreshing change. He is extremely likeable, it appears the players really believe in him, and based on parts of last season it seems that he can really coach. He almost seems to good to be true.

While listening to the interview, I was thinking back to early in Herb’s tenure to try and remember if I had the same good feelings that I have now. I can remember going into Herb’s 3rd year and 4th years being really excited about our potential, but this time around it seems we are on much more solid ground.

This time around our head coach has more experience than Herb did at the age of 32, our assistants have much more experience than Herb’s original staff(L. Harris, Groce, S. Miller), and the talent in the program is IMO much better as well. The one concern with hiring an NBA guy is how well he will handle and tolerate recruiting young kids. With his passion for NC State and ACC basketball, I am not worried in the least about him not liking the most important part of a college coach’s job – recruiting. He understands the traditions of NC State basketball as well as anyone and with his personality I doubt there is anyone who could sell NC State better than Sid.

His NBA experience appears to be a huge plus as well both in terms of coaching, developing players, and in attracting recruits. For the guys doing most of the legwork in recruiting, I’d imagine getting kids interested in NC State is easier now also because of Sidney Lowe.

We need Noah to chime in with some thoughts to get me back to reality.

    Dear Coach,

From real NC State fans who know our history: Talk about championships all you want because you know first hand NC State can win them, the red jacket is a blast from the past from when NC State knew who it was and let the world know it too so wear it proudly during the big games, and lastly I’m glad you’ve decided now is the right time to remind not only the players but the fans what NC State can accomplish and not what the pundits try to force us to believe.

Make it another banner year. GO PACK!!

    NC State Nation

P.S. Tell Monte to start wearing his ’74 National Championship ring. (Yes all newbies, NC State has won 2 National Championships)

    This really impresses me:

[J.J. Hickson] brings unbelievable work ethic. When we do our individual workouts at 3:30, he’ll already have his 6/6:30 am workout that morning. He still came to the 3:30. He brings unbelievable work ethic, works hard, he understands the game, and he’s passionate about the game.

  6. noah 10/13/2007 at 12:41 PM #

Sure would be nice to get two years out of Hickson.

  7. thebigwood 10/13/2007 at 12:42 PM #

Do you think there is a chance he will stay two years?

  8. Mr O 10/13/2007 at 1:40 PM #

And one more year out of Costner…

  9. BJD95 10/13/2007 at 2:59 PM #

If Costner and Hickson both come back, we’re a legitimate Final Four caliber team. We would return everybody in the deep rotation except Grant.

Hickson sounds like a Shackleford/Washburn hybrid, but with work ethic and a brain.

Sid is very smooth with the media, which can only help our national profile as the W/L record improves.

Ummm….Talking championships is only pretentious if you can’t bring in the talent AND have the coaching to back it up—IMHO, Sid can, has, and WILL.

The red jacket? Shows PRIDE and CONFIDENCE….something that can and will rub off on the players and assistant coaches.

The national championship ring? Shows that with hard work, teamwork, and a never say never attitude, ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!! ANOTHER trait that can, has, and will continue to rub off on the players and staff.

Sid played for Stormin’ Norman Sloan and Jimmy V–two coaches that absolutely oozed confidence and expected nothing less that 200% out of not only their players, but themselves. He learned from the very best NC State has ever had, and will instill in HIS kids the very same values.

IF THE COACH NEVER QUITS, THE TEAM NEVER QUITS!

    GO ‘PACK!!

In addition, if the comments I have responded to are regarding a former NC State FB coach, fuggedaboudit….there is NO comparison between the two.

    Touchdown, Gamecocks!

  13. Dr. BadgerPack 10/13/2007 at 4:37 PM #

Is there anything more thought provoking than an 18-21 year old coed with “Go COCKS” plastered across her chest? Only in South Carolina…

  14. noah 10/13/2007 at 4:41 PM #

“Do you think there is a chance he will stay two years?”

Sure. He could always fail to live up to expectations. I remember hearing from the football coaches about how much better AJ Davis was during his redshirt year than they thought when they saw him in high school. I remember hearing about how Marcus Stone was so impressive in practice that he was chasing prospective quarterback recruits away.

If you want to go back aways, there was quite a bit of pre-season buzz about the exploits of Tevin Binns….from his 38 points in a red-white game, to his dunking exploits, to his shooting touch. I remember hearing V on his radio show telling a caller that Kelsey Weems was unguardable and would be the starting PG to start the 85-86 season (and he was…until teams figured out he couldn’t shoot).

As far as Costner goes, I don’t see him being a big NBA prospect. But then again, no one pays me to scout future NBA players.

  15. RabidWolf 10/13/2007 at 6:10 PM #

ha ha ha…Tevin Binns. It’s easy to score a lot when it’s you’re own team mates guarding you in what is basically an elaborate pick-up game.

  16. Dr. BadgerPack 10/13/2007 at 6:10 PM #

^He could also be projected to fall outside of the lottery, which would keep him around. With his potential, and being a freshman, a top 13 pick would probably have to be a guarantee to get him to leave after year one (although I do expect him to be a projected top 10).

Costner will need to (a) get a lot quicker or (b) grow. That’s just what “prototypes” dictate in the NBA now. At this point, he’ll be a Robert Horry type.

  17. Dr. BadgerPack 10/13/2007 at 6:12 PM #

My antecedent was unclear above… first paragraph refers to Hickson.

  18. noah 10/13/2007 at 6:47 PM #

I don’t even think he’d be Robert Horry. But yeah, I agree on his game.

On Hickson, even falling outside of the lottery might not do it. Remember Leon Powe out of Cal? Great college forward, big time prospect out of high school. He even had a knee injury that slowed his progress.

But kids get stars in their eyes and agents in their ears and they can’t be told otherwise.

  19. beowolf 10/13/2007 at 6:50 PM #

I think this would be a good time to have a head coach who knows exactly what pro coaches need and are looking for.

    Oh, wait … 🙂

  20. noah 10/13/2007 at 7:18 PM #

If Lowe can figure out how to make Costner taller and quicker, that would be something, wouldn’t it?

  21. noah 10/13/2007 at 7:19 PM #

UNC damn near knocks off USuC.

Hate to say it…Butch Davis has a pretty good team in Chapel Hill. Please gods of football…please get Arkansas to give him a job.

  22. Wulfpack 10/13/2007 at 7:53 PM #

Yea, they look pretty strong. That defense is coming along. Freshman QB, a few athletes…We got our hands full.

  23. packgrad2000 10/13/2007 at 8:05 PM #

I’m not surprised at all by UNC. Bunting had twice the talent coming into Chapel Hill as we did the past couple of years. We’re probably two years from catching up with them…maybe one if TOB can develop some players as fast as Sid.

  24. Dr. BadgerPack 10/13/2007 at 8:08 PM #

taller and quicker… Barry Bonds and Marion Jones know people… too soon?

  25. packgrad2000 10/13/2007 at 8:30 PM #

    wow…UK knocks off LSU
