Amato Holds No Grudges

“I love those kids up at North Carolina State,” Amato said Monday at FSU’s weekly press conference. “If I had one wish, it would be to meet them somewhere Friday night so I could hug every one of their necks.”

The Wolfpack, 3-9 in Amato’s final season, is 1-4 in Tom O’Brien’s first year as coach. The program is at a low ebb and confidence is lagging, while Amato has rejoined Bowden’s staff and helped the Seminoles regain their defensive snarl.

“I have never heard Chuck mention that or say, ‘I’m glad they got beat’ or ‘That’s what they get,’ ” Bowden said. “He recruited those guys. They’re his guys, and he wants them to do good.

“Now, he does not want them to do good against us. But he has not bad-mouthed N.C. State.”

Nor will anyone at N.C. State bad-mouth Amato.

Obviously he never did read here then.

Still, I would give him a cheer on the opposing sideline. Amato never did less then his best, it’s just that his best wasn’t good enough. He also “got it”.
Problem is, sometimes good workers just can’t hack it above their ability level.

As prideful as Chuck is, I don’t think there is any doubt that he was very hurt by our decision to fire him and I’m sure he is still bitter. Hell, anybody would be in this situation but perhaps Chuck even moreso because he never seemed to have a firm grip on reality.

“Nor will anyone at N.C. State bad-mouth Amato.”

    Wanna bet?

That’s the best interview he’s given in 3 years.

We owe Amato a lot. He was able to get everyone to buy into the program and dream. It’s too bad it didn’t work out for him as I love having an alumni running our program. It would have created a great legacy for him if he could have held on and made us a contender in the ACC most years. His ability to develop defensive players is unquestionable, he just didn’t have much luck with the offensive side outside of Rivers and Chow.

    ^^
maybe defensive line players…but Amato allowed the present horrific situation at LB to develop…

Having an alumni run a team is great when they do good (Sloan, Sid hopefully) but bad when things head south (Les R, CtC).
It creates all kinds of emotional issues that don’t exist with neutral hires.
I know the faithful wanted Cohwer but I wasn’t sold on that for the same reason.

amato had me fooled, thats for sure

Are we happy with where we are? No. Should we blame Amato? Maybe. But absolutely no reason to bad mouth the guy. It did not work the way anyone intended, we are moving on. Thanks for the memories Chuck, thansk for giving your all to the program. We wish you well at FSU, and hope you win them all but one.

I would like to See Purcell move into AD postion and Cowher move into Purcells chair at the Wolfpack Club

Remember when we were worried he was going to leave one day to take over for Paterno or Bowden? Ahh…the good ol’ days.

His legacy at State is and always will be mixed. The mess the team is in now doesn’t reflect well on him. But we had some good years, and some great wins. It was hard, but the time came for him to go. I wish him all the best. No use bad mouthing the guy, it only makes us look like lunatic fanatics. Oh, wait . . .

  14. noah 10/02/2007 at 11:09 AM #

I remember when the Rutgers coach took over and managed to get a couple of players that we were recruiting. People were scoffing, “Why would ANYONE want to go play for worst team in D1 football??”

    Heh…yep, the good ol’ days.

I think Bill Cowher has his sights set a little higher than the WPC.

about the linebackers, i bet they’d look alot better in the amato defense. the front 4 i think is the biggest problem right now (injuries, talent, experience).

In the full article the players they interviewed really miss him.

O’Cain had built a better program when he was let go then what Amato left O’Brien. Yes, Amato left nice facilities and that is is legacy at State but as far as the actual team is concerned I would much rather have what Amato had when he came then what O’Brien was left with.

  18. Wolf-n-Atl 10/02/2007 at 1:11 PM #

Well that’s easy, Amato was left with Phillip.

  19. newt 10/02/2007 at 1:18 PM #

I think Amato made the mass media believe in NC State, but for State fans at the time, Mary Anne Fox made us believe we could be a football school.

We even faltered a bit when Amato was hired instead of a big name like Cowher; however, Amato quickly set the tone with his presser, and maintained and even fed the momentum begun by Mary Anne Fox. Still, she was the first one to say we’d win a National Championship in football at NC State.

All that said, Amato poured his heart into the job and was close to pulling it off at times. But, he drove the car too hard and kept breaking parts.

Nice Article. I don’t why anyone would think Amato would bash us we gave him a shot at being a head coach. He made ten times more than he was making as an assistant. Got over 6 million dollars in an annunity as retirement. He is set financially for life. What was so bad about his time at NCSU? He got job inquiries from other colleges due to his abilty to recruit and put together some great defenses after he was let go. Landed on his feet at FSU and just might be FSU’s head coach one day.

I don’t think he left things worse than he found them, O’Cain’s job status had hurt recruiting and we were thin when Amato came. Amato was smart enough to hire Norm Chow to move the ball and Amato got the defense to play with intensity.

Now lets play what if: What if the ACC Comiss is not a UNC man? Why is it that NCSU is the only ACC team not to have played Duke in the last five plus years in football (we have played everyone else at least twice as of this year) when they are in the middle of their worst ACC record ever. Now assume Amato got to play Duke every year like Carolina and got a win every year. We go to a bowl every year Amato is here up until last year. Which the winning years probably would have continued the recruiting success and maybe the bottom would not have fallen out. Last year’s weak team was the result of the 5-6 year cause that is when the recruiting started to fall off. We play Duke that year and dont have the shaft call at Carolina and we all might be singing a different tune about Amato.

  21. jo2g5 10/02/2007 at 1:35 PM #

Don’t bet we would have won most of those games, for some reason Duke always gave us fits. We could barely beat them when Rivers was our quarterback.

wolf dog, your post sent an icy chill down my spine — at the prospect of being stuck with CTC in perpetuity based on wins over dook and toilet bowl berths

perhaps it’s for the best we went 3-9 last season because maybe you’re right, if amato had actually achieved mediocrity he might still be head coach.

all that said, i don’t have anything personally against amato – he couldn’t get the job done so he had to go. that’s all.

  23. Mr O 10/02/2007 at 3:22 PM #

Amato built the atmoshphere that exists at CF on gameday. He created a passion for NC State football that I have never experienced since becoming a fan in the early-mid 90s. He sold out the stadium, he sold the LTRs, and he made 7 win seasons now mediocre at NC State.

But Amato did not leave the roster as in good a shape as MOC did. Amato’s 1st secondary included 3 NFL players(T. Holt, A. Wilson, B. Williams). Amato’s linebacking unit had 2 NFL players(Clayton White and Levar Fisher) and a 1st team all-ACC player in Dantonio Burnette. His DL had at least one NFL player(Corey Smith still playing this year).

His first team included an already commited NFL QB(Philip Rivers), two NFL WRs(Koren Robinson & Jericho Cotchery), an all-ACC RB in Ray Robinson, three NFL OL(S. Locklear, S. Koostra, and Chris Colmer – may have not been healthy), and Willie Wright at TE.

That is at least 12 NFL players from that roster.

  24. Mr O 10/02/2007 at 3:28 PM #

Also, I can’t remember the other CB, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he was also an NFL guy. I think we tried JJ Washington early, but then he hurt his knee. Not sure who played the position the rest of the season.

Did anyone know Clayton White is the secondary coach at Stanford? White is from Dunn, NC and spent three seasons in the NFL. Good to see him doing so well. He had some huge games for us including 20 tackles against Texas and 23 in Rivers’ first game against Ohio U. He is 10th all-time in tackles at NC State.
