2007 Football Roster

I want this entry to be treated a little differently than our normal blog entries. I have cross-referenced the roster from gopack.com to the recruting classes listed on scout.com to separate the gopack roster into scholarship and walk-on athletes. I then further divided the scholarship athletes into position and class.

I’m pretty good with EXCEL and the VLOOKUP command, but there are many opportunities for mistakes. So I am asking for help in checking this roster and to identify any mistakes that I have made. Based on some of the comments in recent football entries, I am pretty sure that some of you have already done this type of work.

I am not interested in getting any more opinions about the players and/or coaches on this entry. (What are the odds that there is really anything new to say?) Let’s keep those types of comments for other threads and let’s try to concentrate on facts.

In addition, I would like for commenters to include any other pertinent information that would logically fit into a fact-finding entry. Please include a link or source for any such information.

– Note: A link to a message board entry is not a source. I’m talking about real facts and solid sources.

Here are some examples of additional information that would be interesting to include along with a complete roster:

OL: The death spiral, the long road to recovery, and three steps to get there

NC State Reaches 8 Knee Surgeries

And a new one:

GRADE INFLATION

One of the fallacies of the way recruiting classes are graded is that athletes are often counted in two different recruiting classes. Going back to the 2003 recruiting class (red-shirt seniors), I found the following double entries for State.

IF you post a mistake, do not get upset when the table is not updated. These tables are a royal PITA to work with, so I won’t be updating it as mistakes are pointed out. I intend to collect all of the mistakes and/or additions and make a complete new entry with the final, polished result.

TIA for your help on my fact-finding mission.

  2. Mr O 10/09/2007 at 3:19 PM #

RJ Armstrong – scholarship, TOB JUCO recruit IIRC
Keith Willis, JF – coach’s son, transfer from BC w/ scholarship

Also to update players with injuries:
    Anthony Hill, redshirt junior
    Toney Baker, redshirt junior

They should both qualify for redshirts.

  3. Mr O 10/09/2007 at 3:20 PM #

Sorry, Toney Baker – redshirt sophmore

  4. PamlicoPack 10/09/2007 at 3:22 PM #

So by my count we have 77 scholarship players, right? And what is the current total injured? (at least 15, right?). Man, the ranks are thin. Is that number of walkons typical for a BCS program?

  5. StateFans 10/09/2007 at 3:31 PM #

Baker won’t be a true redshirt until next year. Next year he will be a R-Jr

  6. tvp1 10/09/2007 at 3:35 PM #

    Very Nice Work. Two corrections:

Cedric Hickman is playing fullback now, not linebacker
    Luke Lathan is a R-SR, not a R-SO

This brings up a good question….How many fullbacks does State have and who are they?
    VaWolf82

  7. bTHEredterror 10/09/2007 at 3:40 PM #

Luke Lathan is a SR, according to the PackPride roster and my recollection.

Toney Baker is a Junior who will bge redshirted, Hill is a Senior who will be redshirted.

  8. Mr O 10/09/2007 at 3:44 PM #

Statefans: The reason I would list them as I stated is to group them with players that have the same number of year’s left to play.

  9. Mr O 10/09/2007 at 3:50 PM #

    Isn’t that 70 scholarship players?

  10. CarnifeX 10/09/2007 at 3:53 PM #

aren’t NCAA schools allowed 85 scholly’s? or did I just make that up?

  11. LRM 10/09/2007 at 4:00 PM #

You can always find the State engineers in any office, because we actually know what a vlookup is and how to use it.

  12. Mr O 10/09/2007 at 4:05 PM #

    85 is the limit.

I had us with 73 scholarship players last week. I will repost all the names with Hill listed in the junior class and Baker in the sophmore class. I agree that technically that is off, but I think it more accurately reflects the currest state of the roster in terms of who is returning and for how long.

RJ Armstrong and Keith Willis, JR are two that are missing. There might be one more or else I counted somebody incorrectly.

I have been working on this.

    19 Srs
9 Jrs (two JUCOs signed by TOB last year, why is this class so small?)
    16 sophmores
    29 freshman

  13. newt 10/09/2007 at 4:20 PM #

Not sure how you would best handle Marcus Stone’s ranking and stars, given they were at QB.

I’m not sure either, so I just decided to ignore it.
    VaWolf82

  14. PamlicoPack 10/09/2007 at 4:22 PM #

horrific attrition in the Junior class? has anyone done a breakdown? I know this is something Wolfpacker does periodically. It always shocks me how many people never show up for their freshman year or show up and drop out the first week of practice…I guess the transition from High school prima donna to bottom of the totem pole is a little rough for some of these people…

The linked entry on the OL looked at attrition there and did a great job. I toyed around with looking at attrition at other positions, but decided that when and why kids left is not really that important. They are gone and are not coming back. So I decided that intelligent conversation needed to focus on who was left.
    VaWolf82

  15. Mr O 10/09/2007 at 4:55 PM #

As far as the guys I have listed as juniors, two are JUCOs recruited by TOB and one is Anthony Hill who was really supposed to graduate.

So in reality that leaves six total juniors and redshirt juniors on the entire team. Haven’t looked at how this happened.

  16. MadWolf92 10/09/2007 at 4:56 PM #

Yes, I’m not sure how you’d separate Marcus Stone’s position shift from anyone else’s position shift. I’d think that it would matter little, since position-shifters are probably performing better at the new postion than the old, otherwise why would they have switched?

  17. RedTerror29 10/09/2007 at 5:28 PM #

Dave Glenn compared BC and NCSU’s 2003 classes in this entry – http://www.wral.com/sports/blogpost/1883825/

Taking a chance on too many kids with questionably academics can come back and bite you two years down the road when a bunch of those guys are gone. You’re always going to lose guys, but the chance is much higher with a guy with poor academics or a history of disciplinary issues. 9 juniors is a recipe for disaster.

That’s probably part of the answer, and as much as I know without finding the latest breakdown the Wolfpacker did.

  18. noah 10/09/2007 at 5:36 PM #

Mr. O – Jimmaul Simmons and John Bedics Hauschka are both walk-ons, aren’t they?

They might have earned a scholarship, but none were included in the recruiting class (I don’t think).

  19. Mr O 10/09/2007 at 5:46 PM #

Noah: I assumed that if Packpride had them on the commit list, then they are actually scholarship players. That assumption could be wrong.

    Jimmaul Simmons
    http://northcarolinastate.scout.com/a.z?s=178&p=9&c=8&yr=2007

    John Bedics
    http://northcarolinastate.scout.com/a.z?s=178&p=9&c=8&yr=2007

Hauschka was a guess. I assumed that since he is out of state that he had to come here on a scholarship(especially considering how short we are right now) and that he has no more eligibility after this year(an assumption).

  20. vtpackfan 10/09/2007 at 5:58 PM #

“This brings up a good question….How many fullbacks does State have and who are they?”

    1) Hickman
    2) Bedics
    3) Kane
    4) Darrington

Kane fails to show up on scholly or walk on list. He hasn’t been in many games lately….wait a minute did I just imagine this guy?

  21. john of sparta 10/09/2007 at 6:06 PM #

pamlicopack…maybe, but i see it as ACC quals vs. UCF.
we will see more of these “new” universities having zero
quals for NCAA sports to get NCAA money.
(maybe even University of Bye Week)
“catch them if you can”….but they will keep the money.

  22. bTHEredterror 10/09/2007 at 7:20 PM #

Following is an excerpt from this article regarding haushka:

    http://www.newsobserver.com/sports/college/ncsu/football/v-print/story/692586.html

While at Middlebury he knew Jerry Petercuskie, then a former Boston College assistant, and considered going to grad school at BC. But when Petercuskie came to State with head coach Tom O’Brien, Hauschka decided to walk on with the Wolfpack instead.

  23. RabidWolf 10/09/2007 at 8:00 PM #

ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING WORK VaWolf! I had to read over it all twice (the mind boggles) to assimilate it all properly. I don’t have anything to add, just wanted to hand out the well deserved kudos. Just goes to show that this is the only blog with intelligent posts.

  24. Pack92 10/09/2007 at 8:12 PM #

^Agreed with the RabidWolf. Excellent work VaWolf.

On a side note, the TOB show had a spot on Markus Kuhn. The kid (21 year old kid) has a good head on his shoulders and may surprise some of us with a year in the weight room and at the trainers table.

  25. RabidWolf 10/09/2007 at 8:13 PM #

Pack92 makes a great point about Kuhn. Isn’t this young man still LEARNING the game?
