NC State 38 Wofford 17

Sunday 8:52am ESPN.com has posted highlights from the win over Wofford.

NC STATE ends the nation’s 4th longest losing streak at NINE by scoring more than 24 POINTS for the first time since playing Eastern Kentucky in September of 2005 (22 consecutive games)!!!!

In what is surely to be a future trivia question, both Sidney Lowe and Tom O’Brien earned their first victories at NC State against Wofford. (See November 10, 2006)

2nd Quarter Summary

* 49 yard field goal for Steven Hauschka! Nice to know that we can hit that. The klck would have been good from 55 but it was about 1 foot inside the upright, it started off wide right and hooked in.

* In replacement of an injured LaRue Rumph, freshman Thomas Barnes picksed up a fumble and returned it for a five yard defensive touchdown to start the 2nd quarter. When was the last time that we got a free one like this? I guess Willie Young’s TD return at Clemson in the middle of last season. Of course, we still lost that game. Barnes also had a great hit in the 2nd quarter.

* Andre Brown is exerting himself with chunks of yards with every touch. Brown has 113 yards and 2 TDs on just 14 carries.

* Every time Wofford gets some momentum they commit CTC-like penalties for substitutions, formations and procedures. Then again, State’s Martrel Brown and Thomas Barnes both got 15 yard penalties giving Wofford too much opportunity.

* Harrion Beck lost his rhythm in the second quarter

* Bradley Pierson’s third punt puts Wofford on their 17 yard line, but is only 18 yards in length. See first quarter comments on Pierson.

* Click here for “The Rule of 24”

First Quarter Summary Comments

* Johnny Evans called it “Exactly what the doctor ordered” as NC State scores a touchdown on our first drive of a game for only the second time in the last 15 games when Andre Brown went in from three yards out. Brown has 42 yards on only 5 carries and Harrison Beck was 4 of 4 for 32 yards on the first drive.

* The Pack’s defense held the Terriers to a punt on their first series but seems to be trying to find our footing as Wofford gets 4 first downs on 6:30 minutes of possession time. Marcus Kuhn continues to get major playing time on defense. Miguel Scott had 5 tackles in the first quarter.

* Harrion Beck was very sharp in the first quarter despite going only 6 for 12 for 48 yards. Beck had at least three balls dropped (Stone, Eugene, Spencer) and threw one jump ball on a third and long. John Dunlap had three receptions in the first quarter.

* Welcome to the bigtime, Bradley Pierson. Pierson’s first punt went 49 yards!! Allow me to repeat…punts for 49 yards!!!! Pierson nailed his second punt of the night with a high hanger that died on the Wofford 2 yard line. Awesome!!

* State had three penalties in the 1st quarter.

curtis underwood looks good, quick into the hole, driving hard with his legs, but just fumbled, evans assisted on the tackle

    A win is a win.

Defense- A : solid game except for biting on the run fake and getting burned for a 60 yard TD pass. Barnes a big suprise. Hopefully Rumph is back soon, but it’s good to have depth currently and build towards the future. The whole DL did great I thought.

Special Teams- A : No big mistakes and solid punting and kicking. The running into the kicker sucked, but it’s a players going a little too hard not undisciplined IMO.

Offense- C : Nice first drive, and running during the first half. Passing looked like it was working first half, Beck took what the offense was giving and didn’t cause miscues. Second half was crap, either out of sync or just complete lack of execution. Nice to have Brown running loose again, but not exactly something to give you much momentum going forward against Clemson.

Penalties weren’t a huge factor, but we had alot of the 15 yard type. That would cost us in closer games.

Again, a win is a win. Go Pack!

defensive line was still not that strong nor was o line

    here come those hogs!

Considering they are w/o Pressley and lost Bedics, we did great at the DL position against this type of team. They will be better off vs. WF after this effort for sure.

The OL is being help together by duct tape. They opened some hole up the first half but quickly reverted to the same crap after. Beck qwas being flushed out of the pocket and there were no holes to speak off until the second teamers came in w/ Northwood.

Vtpackfan makes a good assesment of the game over all, and most importantly, this is a win. A lose tonight would’ve been devastating.
Clemson will be a much harder test, but I think we all agree this team is going to be a work in progress for the entire season. I hope they learned a lot tonight.

Beck at least sounded more mentally in the game – that is important.
Brown and the other RB’s got a taste of success – lets hope they can find the holes next week and there after.

D, again sounded solid. Barnes really was a great surprise.

Special teams – the punter and the long snapper both deserve big kudos, there were key to this win. Special teams can really change the flow.

Work still to do, some pretty worrying things still there, but I’ll sure take this game.

Hogs score, and go up – maybe, under review.

UNC now has a longer losing streak than both NC State and Dook.

RS now off on Barnes, Vermiglio, Kuhn, Spencer, and Northwood. (Did Roberts come in with second teamers at any OL?)

May seem like alot and potentially a waste for a few if they don’t play much more, but we are scraping pretty thin at a few positions and we are just a quarter of the way through a long grueling season.
These guys are making plays and showing why they deserve the opportunity and the reward for their hard work.

Another TB injury and Northwood will have to step in and fill some huge shoes in a hurry. I also have a feeling that his instincts and style fits well with what this staff likes to do with the ball, a north and south rusher perfect for man to man kick out on the OL. They may very well want him involved in this offense sooner then many might have thought with the talent we already have in place (injured or not).

Kuhn is doing far better so far then I expected. He had one offside call against him when he flinched as the offense went through a series of shifts. Otherwise he was keying on his reads and stuffing the first back through most of the night. Everything Wofford did rushing the ball was around the edges and not up the belly, so we did a great job of making them really earn it.

Barnes was everywhere it seemed. Hopefully Rumph’s ankle sprain needs to heal quickly, but hopefully we’ve got somebody a strong side LB here in the meantime. It would be terrefic to have some solid LB’s who know the scheme Archer wants to run and some PT under their belts in place when Manning, Maddux, and Beasley arrive.

We’re seeing the impact of O’Brien and his staff’s ability to spot talent.

None of those guys were highly regarded players. O’Brien put together a respectable amount of talent in no time.

Everyone says that he can spot unheralded players with potential as well as anyone in the nation.

This was one of the games we’re “supposed” to win big and we did. Congrats to TOB on his first win and the team for getting back in the W column. Let’s build on this and take care of Clemson.

I’m glad to see a win. What still worries me is that we couldn’t put together a true scoring drive in the second half against a lower-tier team. We will have to do better against Clempsun. But, a win is a win.

To add to what vtpackfan mentioned about RS’s. If we would have redshirted TB or Hill, neither would have the extra year for a medical RS this year. I think IF a player can contribute his True Freshman year, you use them, and save the RS for an injury or some other circumstance. It seems many on here think anytime you DON’T RS a Freshman, you’re wasting a RS – I disagree – you still have a chance to use it later.

“donnan said state’s facilities are the best in the country, including the stadium”

I didn’t hear this, so not sure what he was referring to. Our stadium and Murphy Center are probably among the best, but they are not on campus and the stadium is on the small side.

We have no indoor practice football facility.

Our men’s basketball facilties are top-notch, but again, not on campus.

Our other sports facilities are decrepit, but improving.

VT, I agree that this performance will help the defense against the run in general, even if Wofford is not at our level. But don’t confuse what Wofford does on offense with what Wake does. Wofford runs the flex which relies on stretching the line of scrimage and then hitting you with multiple options to move the ball down field. Wake relies on deception and misdirection, they are not the same. Wakes offensive line will be beasts compared to Woffords.

Based on performance in the first two games, I expected Wofford to win last night. Next weekend, I expect Clempson to lose!

Don’t bother to try to get me to rationalize this with any facts, it’s just one of those “gut feelings”!
