Statefans: Can you guys check your basketball sources on the injury?

Yesterday was pretty brutal. Going in, I predicted a 42-14 loss & it was that bad on the scoreboard, but even worse if you watched the game.

CU dominated us on both sides of the line of scrimmage. Davis and Spiller continually and routinely made our tacklers look silly when we wiffed.

The two point conversion – Daniel must have announced that he was throwing it to Stone at the line of scrimmage. And if that wasn’t enough, he never took his eyes off Stone when the play developed. It was an EASY 2 pts. for CU.

We are a couple years away at best. It may be time to cut bait with the dead wood and start playing the freshmen. WPTF had Dwight Hollier from UNC on after the game and he was talking about the 2 1-10 Mack Brown seasons before they finally got it turned around.

It is AMAZING how empty our cupboard is. Several folks are already pointing the finger at TOB, but that’s ridiculous. The only questionable thing he has done in the short term is coming here to start with with the pretty good team he left behind. We all hope the long run will prove him right, but who thought we’d stink up the joint this bad? Not me. I guess I had rose colored glasses on and thought we’d be OK in new coaching staff’s first year since we had done pretty darn good in Sheridan, O’Cain, and Amato’s first years.

Looks like several more long drives home…

I know it is hard to watch the Pack now, but we all knew this was going to be a rebuilding year. Just try to support the team we have now. Better years are coming for the pack.

  4. redfred2 09/23/2007 at 10:30 AM #

Did someone mention “bowling”? That’s not too far off.

I think I heard that Lee and the rest of the AD still have their weekly allotment of lanes reserved for next Thursday night. Don’t hold me to it, but a reliable source tells me that but there’s a big a big brew haha in the office about what shoes and which matching polyester shirts to wear.

  5. Wulfpack 09/23/2007 at 10:33 AM #

“O’Brien admitted his team was worn down and worn out by Clemson’s powerful backs. Taking the long view of N.C. State, Bowden said O’Brien has a proven track record but personnel that might not fit his plan offensively and defensively.”

State will win three games this year.

We’ll go 1-1 against ECU/UNC. ECU will hammer us but we’ll get the Heels, both defenses are despicable.

This is the worst State team I can ever remember.

It’ll be at least two more years before we have any kind of realistic shot at a winning record.

Southern Cal, LSU, Oklahoma & Florida. The WV Mountaineers will creep in when LSU pounds Florida in a couple of weeks.

  6. Dogbreath 09/23/2007 at 10:37 AM #

    1. We have seen the pinnacle and it was Wofford. No more wins this year.

    2. ECTC: 10-27; UNC: 16-30

    3. No different than everything else (non-Academic) associated with our University – mediocre on the best of days, laughable on the worst.

    4. 1996

    5. 3. The question is, will fans have the patience with O’Brien to get there, or vice versa?

    6. USC, LSU, WVU, Oklahoma in that order

  7. terry gannon 09/23/2007 at 11:30 AM #

    1. How many games will NC State win this year?
    [1 at most.]

    2. How will NC State fare against ECU and UNC?
ECU will hammer us…it’s like their Super Bowl, especially after taking out UNC. UNC is a toss-up; if we don’t stop dropping INT’s in the secondary Yates is going to have a field day. As much as it pains me to say it, right now I’d say UNC 30-20.
    3. How well do you think game day operations are run at the stadium. Game days I hate the lines getting in but personally I’ve had no other real issues. Now there are many issues I have with the way the department is run other than on game days that have been well-documented on this site. Overall I’m very displeased with the management of the Ath. Department.
    4. This is the worst NC State team since (what year)? The Tom Reed years.
    5. How many seasons will it be before we play in another bowl game? Two for a subpar bowl. Four before we actually can compete for the conference. We need a major culture change (starting with the players, but also the administration (chuckle), and the fans as well); we are a long way from knowing what it’s like to be and act like a football power. But I do think that TOB is the man to get it done. This debacle is not his fault.
    6. Rank your top four teams in the nation 1) LSU, 2) USC, 3) Oklahoma, 4) Florida.

  8. tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc 09/23/2007 at 12:23 PM #

What was State’s record as a team with Stone as a starter? Those of you, praying that Marcus would be relieved of his duties owe the rest of us an apology.

  9. packpower 09/23/2007 at 12:30 PM #

Between 3 and 7 – probably 5. The sky is not falling as the Pack’s early season schedule has been brutal. UCF nearly defeated Texas and Wofford defeated Appalachian State. Clemson is better than people realize.

Both ECU and UNC could be wins; however, I believe the more likely win is against UNC.

Can’t evaluate since I wasn’t at the games.

This team may not be as bad as 2006, which was the worst team statistically since the late 1950s. The current losing streak to Division I-A schools is 10 games – is that a record? I have a feeling it will end against Louisville.

A low-tier bowl is possible in 2008 but more likely in 2009. Expansion makes this very difficult to predict.

This morning, I say LSU, Oklahoma, USC and Florida. Tomorrow I may reverse the order. Any of those four could be the national champion. Too much football left to be played. We need a playoff.

  10. packgrad2000 09/23/2007 at 1:35 PM #

This team is bad, but remember we have played probably the two best teams in the ACC. Our opponents so far are a combined 13-2, and even Wofford (as packpower pointed out above) beat Appalachian. I’m not saying we’re going to win 7 games, but I think even the losses ahead of us aren’t going to look as bad as yesterday. We will be at least IN most of the remaining games with a chance to win some of them. So don’t give up hope just yet people.

  11. BoKnowsNCS71 09/23/2007 at 1:50 PM #

    1. How many games will NC State win this year? This team is hard to read. Maybe three or 4 — maybe just 1.

    2. How will NC State fare against ECU and UNC? We should win if we can get our act together on defense but I really don’t have any faith that we will.

    3. How well do you think game day operations are run at the stadium? Embarassingly poor. It’s basically the same set up at in 1967 but with more ways to delay entry.

    4. This is the worst NC State team since (what year)? I think it was 1972 the year after Earle Edwards left and I think we won only 1 or 2 games that season.

    5. How many seasons will it be before we play in another bowl game? After this one, 2 and a chance to go to Boise (which most fans will not do).

    6. Rank your top four teams in the nation — UCF, BC, Clemson (just kidding) – USC, LSU, WV, and Oklahoma.

  12. noah 09/23/2007 at 6:41 PM #

“Those of you, praying that Marcus would be relieved of his duties owe the rest of us an apology.”

You mean…what was our record the year we had three first-round draft picks playing defense for us??? Or are you suggesting that Marcus Stone is SO good that he makes the defense unstoppable too?

I think perhaps you owe an apology to the gods of logic and common sense.

The reason people complain about the coaching in college sports is because they feel guilty about bitching about amateurs. You have a Bill Buckner-type moment where a player just completely screwed up and college sports fans would bitch about the coaching.

It’s code for “I’m not happy about mycollege team and I lack the vocabulary to properly articulate my feelings.”

  13. redfred2 09/23/2007 at 6:59 PM #

    t-t-t,

We wanted to see the former staff at least looking at all of the options, and trying something different. I’m going to apologize for that.

  14. gumbydammit 09/23/2007 at 7:36 PM #

God, I hate the bitching and moaning. And to think that some of those who bitch loudest had the audacity to criticize threeeyemonster for exactly the same thing? Clemson is a better football team and whupped our asses. Take it like men and move on.

  15. packpower 09/23/2007 at 8:52 PM #

    What Packgrad2000 and gumby said………..

  16. JimValvano 09/23/2007 at 8:59 PM #

    1. 4 maybe only 3
    2. We will beat both by a combined 3 points
    3. I haven’t been to a game this year (haven’t felt like driving 3 hours there only to have to ride home another 3 hours in a shitty mood)
    4. Last year?
    5. Next year
    6. I like (#1–LSU) (#2 USC) (#3 WEST VIRGINIA) (#4 CLEMSON)

  17. Six Pack 09/24/2007 at 9:13 AM #

First off, we’ve got to improve on the O-Line. With no O-Line it doesn’t matter what the play calls are. Although I do have to question the flea-flicker with Evans in there. God Bless the kid, but he can’t throw the football more than 15 yards down field.

    1) We may beat the Holes
    2) I’m optomistic 1-1
    3) I cannot Comment
    4) 1995 (Jose Loreano, anyone?)
    5) 2009
    6) LSU, USC, OU, Ohio St.

  18. PamlicoPack 09/24/2007 at 11:08 AM #

4-8. Our offensive line might not be exposed as much against ACC teams without an attacking style of defense (although after looking at the Clemson film, they might want to install such a defense…)

1-1. 2-0 would make this a successful season, regardless of whether we lose the other six remaining games…

gameday operations seemed fine to me. Again, I walked right in at the gate with no lines or searches. (I must not fit the profile). I cannot feel sorry for people who don’t have sense enough to go get a drink of water (or fill up their empty cups or bottles) from one of the many water fountains or sinks in the bathrooms.

1996 was the really bad MOC 3-8 team. Gave up 50+ to 4 or 5 different teams, including ECU, UNC, UVa, and FSU. The year before, we actually began the season in the top 25 before a crushing loss 2nd or 3rd game at home to UVA in the closing minutes really destroyed that team’s spirit.

  19. highstick 09/24/2007 at 11:11 AM #

Clempson #4, are you kidding? Their opponents have a combined record of 4 wins and 9 losses! Their schedule is really weak, folks and that does not mean that you need to be overrating them!

It was either 1970 or 1971 was the year after Edwards left and if I remember correctly, we were 3-8 under Al Michaels.

  20. noah 09/24/2007 at 11:27 AM #

Yes, I think that person was kidding. And the 71 team under Al Michaels was my pick too.

  21. JimValvano 09/24/2007 at 12:56 PM #

I put Clemson at #4 because its really a three horse race in my mind at this point. Then I thought to myself…hmmmm…the Big 10 and Big 12 are overrated and slow. All the teams in the Big East will lose at least one game because they all play West Virginia. The PAC 10 is the same way because of USC. Then you look at the remaining undefeateds and you have what Kentucky, Clemson, Boston College, Hawaii, and Florida? I mean…why not choose an ACC team and be a homer, and why not Clemson over Boston College?

  22. JimValvano 09/24/2007 at 1:02 PM #
  23. BoKnowsNCS71 09/24/2007 at 4:10 PM #

Yes it was 1971 with Michaels. Graduated that year and got my year confused for this season. That was truly not a fun season especially since we had done so well in 67 (until the last 2 years). What is amazing is that Holtz came in in 72 and went 8-3, 9-3, and 9-2-1 to really spoil me.

  24. theHowling 09/24/2007 at 10:02 PM #

After faring optimistic before the season started, I regress and seriously doubt we’ll win another game this year. We’re just painful to watch. It’s a sad state of affairs, but true…
