TOB: Pack’s Overconfidence

On the teams overconfidence:

The first thing they have to recognize is that they aren’t as good as they think they are. A lot of these guys have an over-inflated image of who and what they are.”

ACCNow has audio and a blog entry titled, “Pack’s overconfidence irks O’Brien”

So far it’s just been one game. Let’s see what happens. Maybe Beck will make things better. I know, the blind hope of a fan, but it’s still early enough to dream.

I don’t understand the need to put Amato down. He put everything he had into building a program here and we owe him a lot. I don’t enjoy seeing him fail at FSU unless it is against us.

Since the topic is overconfidence let me add a couple of things:

1- While watching the FSU-Clemson game last night I couldnt help but notice that FSU has that swagger back. It seemed to me that some of that was missing the last few years. It’s funny how that swagger comes back the year Amato returns.

2- It is also funny that the “swagger” was humbled greatly after a first half of many, many penalties and awful run defense by the ‘Noles. I guess for some reason Amato thinks that swagger and attitude are more important than fundamentals and execution. That is exactly what he left at NC State.

Overall the penalties weren’t as plentiful as they have been in recent seasons. It’s nice to hear TOB put the word on these guys about not being all world. This season is going to turn on how quickly the guys realize that TOB is telling them the truth. If Hill and Baker can both make full recoveries, their injuries are going to help the turnaround of the program, since wasting a year of eligibility for them this year probably wouldn’t make a huge difference in the overall performance of the team.

Kudos to ESPN360 for the internet broadcast. It was fairly well done and commercial free.

partial qualifier – I watched the FSU-Clemson game with a group of Wolfpackers and this point was thoroughly discussed during the game.

Additionally — to be fair — Chuck Amato was VERY GOOD at taking blame for poor performance for the first 3 to 5 years of his tenure – when he was in no risk of losing his job.

CTC’s post-game comments naturally changed as the overall performance of the program deteriorated and as he felt more and more heat.

This is not a criticism, just an observation. I would tend to believe that this would be natural human behavior in that situation.

Anyone think the FSU -CLemson game was somewhat similar to the NCS-UCF game?

FSU got no first downs in the 1st half (earned that is — 1 on a penalty). Gave up 24 points then had a great 2nd half rally for a loss.

    Just ironic.

Yes the irony was apparent to me.

Of course first games are always interesting. Sad thing is with so few games to be played those that lose the first game are out of luck (as in Michigan).

I hope everyone took the time to listen to the audio link. It was very forceful and direct. I think it’s a very good motivational technique from Coach O’Brien – we’ll see if we look any better next week.

As he (implicitly) noted, it may take some time to beat the Amato out of our players, but he’ll do it. And the incoming recruits will dilute out what remnants remain.

Great comment by TOB. After the previous coach I’m sure this is a message that will need to repeated a lot.

What I can take from Saturday’s loss was that after the first quarter the game was enjoyable. If that had been Amato’s team that had started that way I’m sure the game would of been a miserable, penalty and mistake filled game that would of been hard to stomach. Followed by some inane comments from Amato.

I was pretty sure we would lose the game to Central Florida due to the fact they have one of the best coaches in the country and he has worked with this team for three years now and State is learning a new system. I was pleased at the way the team responded in the second half.

“I don’t understand the need to put Amato down. He put everything he had into building a program here and we owe him a lot”

What exactly did Amato do other than convince a bunch of people that money wins games? See Appalachian State.

It’s astounding to me that a bunch of players from a 3-9 team thought that they could just show up and beat someone else.

vtpackfan…#58 on Saturday was Alan Michael Cash. The radio broadcast said his jersey was torn during the game and there was not another #49 jersey.

  13. RochesterRedWolf 09/04/2007 at 3:15 PM #

it also seemed like there were three #5 jersey’s. Jarvis Williams, Ernest Jones (who was a beast this game) and someone else i thought, i was tripping out.

  14. vtpackfan 09/04/2007 at 5:04 PM #

Cool, thanks clarksa. I thought the player was too short to be Kuhn.

Mr. O – We’re staying at the Hilton in the Financial District.

Rochester – there probably are. Jarvis Williams is a WR, Ernest Jones is a LB and there’s probably a redshirting freshman with the number.
