Take Some Time

We’ve linked the OSU-coach-rant if you are one of the few people who haven’t seen it yet. We have put SO MUCH good stuff on the blog since Friday that we thought this could serve as a little breather and encourage you to spend some time reading some of the great stuff that is on the site. Thanks!

and then sports radio goes to commercial.
    for 4 minutes.
maybe they Rome’s show (that I don’t get) could go to all commercials.

I would agree with Mr. O and others. IMO a well thought out statement, scathing in its vocabulary, and filled with facts, but delivered in a calm professional manner is the best medicine for any media critique. It is using their own methods against them. Read the script of the interview in a calm manner and see if the meaing really changes. This is Bill O’Reilly style journalism, with a Bill o’Reiully style yelling fit as a retort. My Momma told me two wrongs don’t make a right, Coach.

I’ll just add, we don’t have “gentlemen’s clubs” here in Alabama – so we don’t even have good ads, like Candy and Sizzle inviting me for a $5 prime rib buffet and lap dance.

the OSU Coach’s presentation of his opinion, worthy as it maybe, gets lost in the tirade, so that he becomes the story. Far better would be a calm discussion of it – one of those stone cold taken back behind the wood shed pronouncements – where the focus would’ve remained on the silly – if not out right dumb – column.
But then there is no bad publicity . . . is there?

After reading that article, it amazes me that that “story” ever made it to print!!

The OSU coaching staff should be embarrassed for the HC’s performance, but the editorial staff at that paper should be equallly red-faced for printing such an obvious smear-piece to begin with. . . I wonder what Reid did to piss her off?

I’ll admit that I’ve never been able to listen to Rome long enough to get to the meat of his discussions. It’s like listening to a bad cell phone connection where the guy keeps repeating the same thing and getting louder and louder so you can supposedly hear him.

I’ve agreed with some of what he’s said at times and thought him to be a complete idiot pompous asshole at others, but the bottom line is that he and the rest of the media goons that make a comfy living blabbering on and on about the same things over and over stir issues for the sake of job security. They stir up garbage for the sake of being able to sit around and talk more garbage. Rome shouldn’t be singled out in that, mind you. He’s just another “clone” to use one of his terms. Hell. From a sheer capitalistic perspective they’re all geniuses I reckon. THey get to sit in the safety of their studios blasting whatever and whoever whenever and get paid for it. They don’t have a clue what real work is, and for that I guess I have to toast them. I wish I could make a living talking about sports 4 hours a day. A 20 hour workweek would make my body shut down from the shock of it all.

The TO saga… jeez. I had to turn the radio off and stop reading the papers during that dreadful many months. You would have thought TO played 10 different sports the way they all kept beating that dead horse from any possible angle during any and every conversation for days, weeks, months on end.

HATE Screaming A. Smith. HATE Jim Rome. HATE Boo-yah Scott.

Like Colin Cowherd (even though I disagree with him), like the First Team on Fox people (can’t remember the guy’s name), like Mike Tirico.

If you were going to shoot Jim Rome in the face, I’d buy a ticket. Hell, I’d buy two. Hell, I’d buy scalped tickets. And then I’d buy you a beer. Hell, I’d buy you two beers.

  8. GAWolf 09/25/2007 at 4:53 PM #

Question: Anyone know Jim Rome’s personal sports history? As in, has he ever played an organized sport at any level? Not that it matters so much, but I’d be curious to know.

  9. Elrod 09/25/2007 at 5:11 PM #

Mr. O – Thanks for the interesting follow-up on the PC. My take: both of them had a chance to take the high road in the aftermath; he chose to take it, while she didn’t. There is no way I would publicly discuss the details of such tabloid journalism. Now privately, that’s a different matter.

Here is some info on Rome:

#19 most influential personality in radio(#1 sports)

Next closest sports guys are #46(Mike and Mike)

Rome has really matured over the years as has his radio show and his newest show on ESPN that has been on for several years now. Jim Rome is Burning is one of the best shows of its kind on television and he does it five days week(in addition to his radio show). I work from home, so I get to see it fairly often.

I am not a “clone” by any means, but I think the criticism is mostly based on perceptions built based on his early years.

Gawolf: No sports beyond HS. Graduated from UCSB.

I also got this from the interweb… it could be worthless… or it could be priceless.

I’ve know Jim Rome since his loser days at Calabasas High School. The kid got a nose job and chin reconstruction on his 18th birthday from his rich parents. No kidding. This is the geek that could. His career is one of the greatest con jobs ever. Believe it from some one who knows. Rome is a fraud.

  12. GAWolf 09/25/2007 at 5:47 PM #

Where did you see he played sports in highschool? Or was that an incorrect inference by me? I can’t find it.

  13. Mr O 09/25/2007 at 6:13 PM #

Incorrect inference. There was no information on him pre-college that I could find.

Tom Suiter announced that there would be a new Sports Talk Radio coming to the Triangle in October — FM channel WCMC 99.9 Former NC State’s TE Mark Thomas will be an afternoon host. Info on WRAL.com

Thanks for the link BoKnows…that’s interesting because that show will be going up against David Glenn’s show on 850 the Buzz, which I really enjoy. Doesn’t David Glenn blog for WRAL? And this new radio station is a CBC station it looks like, which owns WRAL. But it will be nice to have a Wolfpacker on the air!

  17. BoKnowsNCS71 09/25/2007 at 9:53 PM #

Need to have a link. Lots of competition here. WRAL has some connection with Fox. Wonder how that affects things. Wish SFN would put this on a new thread.

I don’t need any reference to his high school sports career to know he never played a sport. The fact there is no information would infer to me there is no history there to be found anyway as Rome is a self-promoter and would trumpet it from the hills to lend creedence, and its not particularly germaine in reference to a broadcasting career at any rate.

He rarely if ever makes informed points, and his attack on soccer and other sports with a less virile reputation smacks of compensation to me. From my experience with it, his show is a geek parade for a bunch of his socially frustrated, equally uninformed, overly pretentious fans.

I like Packer, and Artie Spanier, and Colin Cowherd is entertaining as well.

  19. choppack1 09/25/2007 at 11:06 PM #

Actually, I think Rome knows his pro sports. I don’t think he knows his college sports. I think when it comes to college sports that his regionalist attitude gets in the way. I enjoy some of his takes on pro sports.

I like Colin Cowherd because he makes me laugh. I like(d? haven’t heard him in a while) Dan Patrick because he’s a pretty thoughtful sports fan, I agreed with him, and he made me laugh. I like Dave Glenn because he’s got excellent information and analysis.

If this woman feels it necessary to defend her “credibility” than she should tell where and how she got her information for the story. Why should Gundy risk his job to point out any possible flaws in her column?! He is doing the right thing now, just like he did by calling her out. Maybe he shouldnt have done it so harshly, but letting out emotions is like shitting- it happens.

  22. Packaholic1 09/26/2007 at 8:16 AM #

He shouldn’t be reading ANYTHING in the media regarding football – it is almost all garbage. Why he would waste his time is beyond comprehension.

  23. LRM 09/26/2007 at 8:28 AM #

Actually, this chick is savvy. The longer this stays in the media’s eye, the better chance she has of being noticed and getting a better gig.

  24. BoKnowsNCS71 09/26/2007 at 8:47 AM #

More on FM 99.9 The Fan Sport Radio — Coming October 2 — Capital Broadcasting has the rights to NC State games, the Carolina Hurricanes. and they own the Durham Bulls. NCSU is already on 101.5 but I wonder if the switch will be made to this channel?

  25. Rick 09/26/2007 at 8:52 AM #

I have not listened to Rome for more than a few seconds, his schtick and delivery is so annoying I cannot even get to the meat of his opinion.

I like Glenn. He is about the only sports talk show I listen to.
