Take Some Time

We’ve linked the OSU-coach-rant if you are one of the few people who haven’t seen it yet. We have put SO MUCH good stuff on the blog since Friday that we thought this could serve as a little breather and encourage you to spend some time reading some of the great stuff that is on the site. Thanks!

Up to a point, the coach was absolutely right to be angry about the piece and stand up for his player.

Then he just kept going. It went from a justified expression of outrage to a temper tantrum. This, IMO, is going to damage the poor kid’s rep even more, as it gives the impression that he was doubled over in shock over the article, unable to take it.

  2. Mr O 09/25/2007 at 1:25 PM #

Several on here(Noah, Beowolf, ADS95) have all essentially expressed my opinion. IMO, the coach didn’t set a very good example of how to handle yourself professionally in this type of situation.

So if a player now disagrees with a referee on the field, a coach at practice, or a teacher in the classroom, then is the player supposed to go nuts screaming and yelling at a press conference?

  3. BoKnowsNCS71 09/25/2007 at 1:29 PM #

Little over dramatic but definitely protecting his player. Wrong Venue. Should have taken the high ground, told the media that he was talking to the Editor, and said in fewer words that ridiculing a player who has done nothing wrong should not be a topic for the papers.

Unfortunately, the rant will sell more papers and give more feet to the story than it needs. That has ocurred.

It was just a Denny Green moment. People react.

Oh — I’ve said this before but writing about this topic is what sports talk in the media has become “bar talk”

This AM I had to listed to some guys say infer that most of the 100 people treated for heat problems were probably drinking booze, that followed by a 15 miunte hydration/hygiene chat about drinking from public water fountains, and then the put down of several QBs, the put down of some others. Then another 10 to 15 minutes of Halo — a video game and how a 60 dada year playing it was insane — about as insane as hearing two 28 year olds rave on about it during a sports show for so long.

I just think sports talk radio/media needs to talk more sports and get away from creating controversy, dissing athletes, and trying to make stories that aren’t. When I listen to a show out of NY or another market, they spend more time on the sport, educate, get into informative discussions — they really don’t care whether a QB wears two gloves and what color they were.

As someone who lets his emotions get the best of him, I can say that there are certainly times in any profession when this sort of rant is necessary. There are always two schools of thought here 1) never lose your cool and always act professional and 2) do what’s right regardless of what it makes some think of you.

I’ve chosen both options when dealing with over-pompous, often-ridiculous, and condescending judges. I regret more the times I didn’t stand up for myself, my staff, and/or my clients more than the times that I did. I’m not saying that part of me doesn’t regret lashing out, but the regret is a very different feeling than when you later believe you didn’t do what was right to protect that which you are charged with responsibility of protecting.

I’ve lost my cool and yelled at two judges (both off the bench, mind you) and both now treat me with twice the dignity they did before. Sometimes you have to lash out to get through to someone who doesn’t want to listen to reason. Some people are so indignant that the only thing they can hear over their own voice and opinion is someone who is yelling.

I think this coach regrets doing this in retrospect. But I also firmly believe that he would regret it even more had he not done it.

I applaud him, though it’s clear he wasn’t quite lucid with his statements. He could have yelled, stomped and gotten the point across with a third as much time and saved a little face.

He brings up a good point, though, college athletes are not professional athletes. However, the flip to that argument is that they’re getting “paid” by getting a free education. I think it’s funny that personal attacks are often the brunt of much ado on a message board, but yet it’s okay to publish it in a newspaper by a self-proclaimed “professional writer.” That, to me, is ridiculous.

    Anyway, good for you coach.

  6. GAWolf 09/25/2007 at 1:45 PM #

Mr. O… I’ve had countless coaches say to my various teams “It’s my job to argue with the refs/umps/etc. Not yours.” I think most kids/student-athletes understand and appreciate that when you get to the collegiate level. You’re not talking about 8-year-old Peewee football kids who can’t differentiate between the coach and the players. At 18 years old and over I think you have a pretty good understanding that the coach holds a much different posture with “authority” than you do as a mere player.

Again, I think he should have been better prepared for the rant but I don’t think the rant was necessarily unwarranted or even unprofessional.

Noah, I do think journalistic standards have worsened over the year as huge impersonal conglomerates squeeze every penny out of their local media outlets and care very little about the quality of product they put out there. When journalism was more local, it was better. Not great, but better.

  8. GAWolf 09/25/2007 at 2:01 PM #

I listen to sports talk radio in the Raleigh market only when they are discussing ACC sports. Anything else is “blah blah blah…” *pause* “the same blah blah blah…” *pause* “the same blah blah blah….. ad nauseum.

Jim Rome says the same thing for 3 minutes straight sometimes. And I mean the exact some words in the exact same sequence with the exact same inflection in his voice. It’s terrible. And I completely believe it’s because the sports media world is so terribly saturated.

It’s almost as if you’re not writing about someone’s mom or who the hot sorority girl they banged at a party on Saturday night after the game it’s just not “news” because if it’s actually sports-related it’s been talked about for hours on end already.

I’ll be honest, I come here to see if there is anything worth reading about Wolfpack Sports anymore. Unless you’re a trust-fund baby sitting at home nursing a Monday night hangover, who in the world has time to actually sift through all the media out there to see if anyone said anything remotely intelligent about your team today? It’s a full time job.

  9. noah 09/25/2007 at 2:06 PM #

Cradle – we’ll have to agree to differ on that one then.

  10. GAWolf 09/25/2007 at 2:30 PM #

On a lighter note, any progress on the smelly cup mystery?

  11. cradletograve 09/25/2007 at 2:40 PM #

    Sure thing, Noah

  12. PackMan97 09/25/2007 at 2:43 PM #

    GAWolf,

What *pause* are you talking about *pause* regarding the Rome show? *pause* Let me say it this way *pause* why are you *pause* having a problem with the Rome Show? *pause* If you don’t like Jim Rome *pause* why don’t you come out and *pause* say it. *pause* I mean you are *pause* free to change the channel *pause* if Jim Rome *pause* bothers you. So, I ask again *pause* what do you have against *pause* Jim Rome. *Pause* Jim Rome *pause* is a very hard worker. *pause* If Jim Rome *pause* worked harder *pause* maybe you wouldn’t *pause* have a problem with him?

  13. cradletograve 09/25/2007 at 2:48 PM #

Packman97, that went over my head. Pause. Slightly different topic here, does anybody know if ESPN streams games shown on ESPNU simultaneously on ESPN360? This saturday’s louisville game is on espnu and I do not have it. Anyone have any hints about seeing it other ways?

  14. BoKnowsNCS71 09/25/2007 at 2:50 PM #

I guess this means we won’t be “spanking our monkey” to get a Jim Rome “Tor-stop” anytime soon. No ducats for the triangle I suspect.

  15. colapack 09/25/2007 at 2:52 PM #

There is a time for diplomacy and mind games and then there is a time to drop the bomb. Sometimes emotions get the best of you…he probably should have slept on it one more night. I think he pulled out the mother of all bombs when all he needed was a hand granade…but using the bomb rather than diplomacy has my vote.

  16. lush 09/25/2007 at 3:16 PM #

im not saying that there is a time and a place for Jim Rome, but theres a time and a place for Jim Rome.

im not the guy that says this qb is a pussy, but this qb is a pussy.

im not the one to pile on coaches who overreact and make a fool of themselves, but this guy overreacted and made a fool of himself.

  17. packgrad2000 09/25/2007 at 3:27 PM #

Listening to Jim Rome makes my head hurt and I’m pretty sure I become dumber after listening to him. On the other hand, I thoroughly enjoy Dave Glenn and the other locals on 850.

  18. Mr O 09/25/2007 at 3:33 PM #

There isn’t a broadcaster in sports or a radio talk show host that fans actually like these days. It is now “cool” to hate anything and everybody that covers sports. Who do people actuall like these days besides themselves?

As far as national talk show radio hosts, Jim Rome is IMO the best. His opinions are logical and well-supported and to be honest I rarely disagree with his opinions and major topics. I swear the people who complain about him have never really even listened to him or watch him on TV. I get to listen to a lot of sports talk because I go through periods where I spend a lot of time in the car.

As far as interviews, he is as good as anyone out there and he is highly respected by his peers and athletes not named Jim Everett. Heck, I have listened to two fantastic interviews of Bob Costas in the last 45 days and there isn’t a more sports broadcaster in the business. What other shows does Costas appear on regularly?

  19. BoKnowsNCS71 09/25/2007 at 3:44 PM #

May be logical thinking – but it’s also delivery. Pauses and repetitions, pandering to the ego stroking clones. Maybe he is better now at being a better interviewer but he still started out like all the current guys baiting and dissing. And then since it worked — we got what we have right now. Howard Cosell was good also and people loved to hate him.

  20. MadWolf92 09/25/2007 at 3:49 PM #

Jim Rome might be a poet laureate, but I can’t tell, because when he talks all I hear is Jim Carrey screaming “AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNNGGG” from Dumb and Dumber. Simply one of the most annoying speakers I’ve ever heard.

  21. Mr O 09/25/2007 at 3:56 PM #

Watch Jim Rome is Burning to see his delivery(you may need DVR). Quick hitting, no pauses, and well laid out. His delivery is what makes him better than his peers. When he first started his radio show, I agree it was sophmoric back then. But he has come a long, long ways from those days and the interview with Jim Everett. Again, I don’t think the large majority of people who complain about him ever really listen to his show or watch him on TV. He is very professional and his “takes” are typically along the lines of what the masses of sports fans agree with on sports issues.

He did have fun with our coaching search and the urination incident last year, so I can see why some NC State fans would like him.

  22. Mr O 09/25/2007 at 4:03 PM #

Interesting, at today’s press conference the reporter asked him to clarify what 75% of her column was inaccurate so she could report that and he refused to answer the question. So he will rip her in public and then not answer her question in the same forum?

Related to coaches going on rants–here’s one from Paul Johnson from pat Forde’s ESPN article. He got it from Navy’s website (found it entertaining and humorous):

Reporter: Can I ask you something without making you mad?

    Johnson: Maybe. I don’t know.

Reporter: I was talking to a Navy fan and he said he follows the coverage and that he noticed something and I’m just going to put it to you. He says that it seems like when Navy loses you blame the players, i.e., we can’t execute fundamental plays, but that the success of the team the last four years has been attributed to brilliant coaching. How do you respond to that?

Johnson: Whatever he thinks. I don’t go down to McDonald’s and start second-guessing his job so he ought to leave me alone.

Reporter: But do you feel like it can’t be both ways?

Johnson: You know what? I could care less. I’m old enough where I could give a crap what the fans think or what you think to put it in a nutshell.

Reporter: Wins and losses are evenly distributed as far as credit and blame, right?

Johnson: If you could ever find one time that I said we won the game because of brilliant strategy I will kiss your butt at city dock and give you two days to draw a crowd. Find it and bring it to me. Tell that guy that if he wants to talk to me I live at [address given but deleted for the transcript] I will be right there. Come ring my doorbell and I will be glad to talk to him.

  24. packgrad2000 09/25/2007 at 4:09 PM #

Yeah I don’t know whose delivery is worse – Jim Rome or Jim Kramer (mad money guy). They better be intelligent because they have terrible radio voices and generally are difficult to understand, at least to me.
Mr. O I think people get tired of hearing the national media types in general because so many of them just follow the script of what everyone else is saying without really looking into stories too much. Jimmy Dykes comes to mind. The local media tend to know more intimately situations and understand it better. Many State fans like to hate Caulton Tudor, but I think he’s one of the best around and I highly respect him.
As far as national media goes, I like Kirk Herbstreit and Lee Corso actually doesn’t bother me all that much. And as far as TV announcers goes, I really learn a lot from the NFL announcers. They are night and day difference from the Lincoln Financial guys. I’ve never really listened to any other national talk radio host except for Jim Rome, and I find him egotistical and yes…repetitive. He just seems to drag on for 10 minutes for what could easily take 2…like he’s just trying to fill time.
