Tackling

There have been a number of comments made in the various threads here about State’s tackling or the lack thereof. Since I’m currently in exile in Northern Ontario, I haven’t seen the last two ball games (though the evidence suggests that I haven’t missed anything worth remembering). No one lists missed tackles in official stats, so the best that I can do is to go through the stats that are available at gopack.com.

The following table compiles the stats on tackles for the UCF, BC, and Clemson games. I have read some comments here about the LB’s never making tackles. Those comments appear to have been, at the very least, slight exaggerations.

Here are the links to the gopack.com stats for each game included in the following table. As always, any mistakes in the compilation are mine and are unintentional.

Here are some more stats for the same three games(Wofford not included is important):

    Tackles for loss NC State/opponents – 17 for 77 / 21 for 122
    Sacks NC State/opponents – 2 for 16 / 6 for 59

So far, opposing defenses have produced 88 more negative yards and 8 more negative plays.

    Average starting field position

    UCF 39 yard line
    NC State 31 yard line

BC 33 yard line(actually better as an interception for TD not factored in)
    NC State 27

    Clemson 33
    NC State 32

Vawolf82: I wondered the same thing about the lack of LB tackle comments because I have looked at the stats. One thing I was trying to show with our fewer sacks and fewer TFLs is that maybe our linebackers are obviously making tackles further behind the line of scrimmage than our opponents which was definitely noticeable on Saturday.

The D actually played pretty well against BC. I think there were only two series the whole games where BC had more than 4 first downs on a drive. BC either had a short field, scored on defense, or beat us on a big play(their last TD in the 4th quarter).

It was really disheartening against Clemson though. We actually forced them into 18 third downs, but Clemson converted half of those with several being 3rd and long.

TOB said during his coaches show that the LBs were playing too lateral and not attacking the line of scrimmage, I’m sure that has something to do with it. It also suggests that we are not crazy, b/c there was a ton of missed tackles against CU

  4. noah 09/24/2007 at 3:51 PM #

Well, if two guys miss tackles and the safety and the other OLB make the tackle 10 yards from the initial point of attack, the LB is going to register an assist, but…the point remains the same.

Lerue Rumph, to give credit where its due, had a decent second half against Clemson.

Our real hope might be that folks think we are so bad they over look us, and the fellas put it together on the same day.

  6. packbackr04 09/24/2007 at 4:04 PM #

We will win no more than 3 games this year… UNX and ECTC being our only chances… and EvBeez is right, for that to happen, they will have to be having an off day while we are on point… but i say we might not win another game all year.

I for one am ready to see that Russel Wilson kid from Va play. As a matter of fact, if my drunken father has any eligibility left, i’d like to see his fat ass suit up and play for the o-line… Some old timer out in New Mexico is doing it, why not my old man>

  7. noah 09/24/2007 at 4:07 PM #

Unless he’s going to play left tackle…what difference does it make?

  8. noah 09/24/2007 at 4:07 PM #

(speaking of which…Jerrail McCuller’s return was a brief one. He blew out his knee)

  9. PAPacker 09/24/2007 at 4:45 PM #

I haven’t seen comments about Lb’s not making plays. Ernest Jones was everywhere in one game I saw. Clemson made us look silly on defense. Spiller’s long run in the first half looked scripted the tackling was so bad.

  10. RochesterRedWolf 09/24/2007 at 5:12 PM #

you also have to factor in how long the defense was on the field. I actually think they played pretty decent in the first half considering how good Clemson really is…alot of times there was penetration into the backfield or where the DL and LB’s string out a play, but then Davis and Spiller would just go into some freaking 7th gear and still get 5 yards.

I still think we need a few days later to really analyze what happened. Missed tackles for sure, but i don’t think its that bad.

By the 4Q, the defense was tired and beat to hell. That last drive where Clemson ran the ball 8 straight times and was getting 8yds a rush was just hard to watch, like watching someone get lethal injection.

  11. BJD95 09/24/2007 at 5:21 PM #

Honestly, it’s a near-miracle that Clemson only scored 42 on us. In a sense, it kind of validated Archer’s “bend, don’t break” strategy. We just didn’t create any turnovers and our OL play was so awful that we had no chance to catch up on the scoreboard.

Clemson had dominant possession time and their yards per play average was just sick.

  12. MadWolf92 09/24/2007 at 5:27 PM #

Actually, the only missed tackles that I can immediately remember involved CB’s, perhaps S’s.

  13. haze 09/24/2007 at 5:49 PM #

^ I think when you give up 42, you’re bending & breaking… if not just bending over.

Giving up only FG’s would be bending and braking. Yes?

Seriously, I agree. A final score of 42-20 was miraculous given the outright physical dominance displayed on the field.

  14. BJD95 09/24/2007 at 6:21 PM #

The physical dominance was on par with the 70+ point shellackings FSU handed out to MOC’s weaker squads. The final score was really quite tame, IMHO.

Brohm will step off the bus with 400 yards this Saturday.

  16. BoKnowsNCS71 09/25/2007 at 8:56 AM #

Surely, a team like Louisville after two upsets is going to come to CF with something to prove. They have some serious problems on defense against a good offense.

Problem is — do we have an offense? Take the over on this game, it could add up to 100 with a 1000 yards in offense.

  17. Todd 09/25/2007 at 9:05 AM #

BoKnows football! I see about 60-30.

“We will win no more than 3 games this year… UNX and ECTC being our only chances”

we win those 2 I’ll be happy.

“Surely, a team like Louisville after two upsets is going to come to CF with something to prove. They have some serious problems on defense against a good offense.”

If you think Syracuse is a good offense, I got a Bridge in Brooklyn to sell ya. Cuse had 595 yds and 32 points in 3 games coming in, and scored 38 with 465 yds against L’ville. The three opponents were Washington, Iowa, and Illinois. Not cupcakes, but not powerhouses either.

MTSU, a sunbelt team, hung 42 and 555 yards on L’ville, while they totalled 31 points in 653 yards in three games with FAU, LSU (of course this skews the numbers) and WKU. MTSU almost doubled their rushing totals in these three games (139 yds) against L’ville (265). Kentucky actually struggled with them (sic), posting anemic 460 yards with 185 yards rushing, whilst scoring 40 points. That was a rivalry game though, defenses always buckle down then.

Murray State was able to generate 271 yards and 130 rushing against L’ville. While the Racers best performance is 240 yards rushing and 435 overall playing Lambuth, they were soundly beaten by Ill St (42-17) and Tenn Tech (48-24)as well as L’ville (73-10).

Once is happenstance, twice coincidence, thrice a trend. We will have our best offensive day, just as these other teams have and particualrly on the ground agaisnt L’ville. Likely well enough to keep them out of the 40’s and us in the game.

What concerns me is that L’ville has piled up some yards on the ground, and we can’t stop a running play unless its by accident. I think we will win, but if we have another early turnover this will turn into the BC game. We get to say Brohm didn’t have a great day. but they ran for 300 yards. We have to get the lead early and then unleash AB and JE on their house of cards before they can unleash their Rbs on ours. We should pile up 500 yards, 66% of our average like L’villes other opponents, 35-30 State wins, holding on late.

    Penalties thru 4 games:

    2006: 28 for 235 yds
    2007: 26 for 234 yds

  21. Mike 09/26/2007 at 9:55 AM #

bTHEred, while I agree there will be a lot of offense (and defense will be very offensive) I think you meant 35-20 at the half?
