UVA UNC

Virginia survives. Moves to 2-0 in the ACC by beating Duke and Carolina. So, who knows how good/bad they really are.

Some of the comments and perspectives of Steve Martin and Doc Walker in just the last two minutes cracked me up. Included in their comments were the following:

* the officials had a great day (despite the fact that they sucked)

* Walker proclaimed that UVa was short on a 3rd down play that ended up being measured as a first down.

* ‘the difference in the game was the overturned field goal’

Can’t help but pity these guys.

3:18pm – UVA 22 UNC 20, 4Q 1:56
TJ Yates continues to impress and drives the Heels for a touchdown but cannot convert the 2 point conversion. Nobody really knows how much time is left in the game because of scoreboard issues. This has got to SCARE Virginia while playing in Chapel Hill with ACC refs. Who knows how long this game may go if Carolina can get the ball back.

3:04pm – UVA 22 UNC 14, 4Q 3:35
Another bad call by the ACC officials calls Sewell down when his knee did not hit the ground. The result takes about 20 yards of field position away from Virginia and forces the Cavs to play conservatively and punt. No return for Carolina, who has 86 yards to go for a TD.

2:45pm – UVA 22 UNC 14, 4Q 8:56
After Chris Long stops a Carolina drive with a turnover, the Cavs settle for their FIFTH FIELD GOAL of the afternoon (tying a school record) because of REPEATED failed execution inside the Tarheel red zone. Virginia looks like a Chuck Amato-coached team (save the Chow and Galbraith years) with consistent mental mistakes the moment that the team enters the red zone. It is extremely sloppy.

2:24pm – UVA 19 UNC 14, 3Q 3:47
Hakeem Nicks scores on a long reception. Why do you hang out here? Allow me to direct you to our comments just over an hour ago — UVA “must avoid a stupid turnover and contain Carolina’s big play WRs and the Heels offense will have a hard time scoring enough points to compete with the Cavs, who will surely continue to pound the running game at a tiring Tarheel defense.

2:17pm – UVA 19 UNC 7
HOLY SHIT! The officials on the field called a field goal that went through as being short! Unreal!!! ONLY in Chapel Hill. Count that as another embarassing black-eye for the nation’s worst officials from the Atlantic Coast Conference. They are surely accustomed to it by now.

Ironically, the Lincoln Financial ‘field reporter’ who hadn’t provided us one ounce of value during the day was dumb/incompetent enough to say that the attempt looked short to him from his angle in the end zone. Hell, at least he fits in with the incompetence of the entire broadcast crew.

Virginia pounded the Carolina defense for 7 minutes and then fell apart on three consecutive plays to miss a field goal and keep the Heels in the game. Sewell needs to develop the ability to think with his head as opposed to only with his feet.

1:36pm – UVA 16 UNC 7, Halftime
UVa dropped an important interception in the Carolina end zone with 46 seconds to go in the half. Carolina ends up getting a TD with 22 seconds in the half to give them a reason to keep their heads in the game during halftime.

Here is something to listen to during halftime. John Bunting is in Maine and is still married to…well…you know. Additionally, Bunting can’t avoid taking a swipe at good old NC State.

1:35pm – Around the Country
* From EverettBezz in our comments section, “Citadel puts together about a 4 min, 80 yrd drive, capped with a 8 yrd pass from QB Roberts for the TD. PTA good, so the game is tied. Key on this drive was Wis had them 3rd and about 8, first set of downs, and Cit breaks a 20 yard run. Tie game with Wisconsin, 4 left in the half. Kick off goes out of bounds, on the rekick, personal foul after the return man is out of bounds. Nice 40 yrd run puts Wis on the 8 or so, and they score easily. 4 playce, 46 yrds, 1 min. Wis up 21-14. Damned if Citadel doesn’t answer right back. Tied 21-21.
* The real shocker is Mississippi State 13 Auburn 0
* Penn State finally pulling away from Buffalo at 17-3.
* Clemson leads Furman 10-0

1:25pm – UVA 16 UNC 0

1:12pm – UVA 16 UNC 0
Also known as SFN 29 UNC 0. Nice. The Taheel defense looks helpless out there. The Cavs already have over 200 yards and now are in complete control of this game. They must avoid a stupid turnover and contain Carolina’s big play WRs and the Heels offense will have a hard time scoring enough points to compete with the Cavs, who will surely continue to pound the running game at a tiring Tarheel defense.

1:03 -Around the country
Wisconsin is tied with The Citadel AND Penn State is tied with Buffalo in the 2nd quarter. Additionally, Miss State is up on Auburn 10-0. I watched all of the Auburn USF game last week and was very unimpressed with the Tigers quarterbacking.

12:55pm – UVA 13 UNC 0
Virginia could have all but put Carolina away with a touchdown…but, a penalty and poor execution gives Carolina hope. The Tarheels have quick-strike capabilities on special teams and with Brandon Tate and Hakeem Nicks.

12:51pm – UVA 10 UNC 0If you could combine the UNC defense and the NC State offense, it might be the worst football team in America. UNC’s defense looks awful.

12:46pm – UVA 10 UNC 0
OMG! It gets WORSE!! Check out the comments and link at 12:22pm. In the middle of a play where Carolina’s RB obviously fumbled during a run, Doc Walker is proclaiming, ‘He’s down. Balls down’ in the middle of the run. Then he gets quiet and recants while watching the replay. It’s just embarassing. Related, you will enjoy clicking on this link .

12:36pm – UVA 10 UNC 0
I teased this game with some other early ones and had UVA +13. Make that SFN 23 UNC 0. By the way…I think I am loading up big time on Southern Miss over ECU today.

12:24pm – UVA 7 UNC 0
Carolina looks a lot like the Carolina that we know. Especially along the offensive and defensive lines. And, Virginia isn’t supposed to be very good.

12:22pm – UVA 0 UNC 0
I know that we say this ALL OF THE TIME…but how does Steve Martin and Doc Walker keep their jobs without being able to understand the rules of football and without the ability to naturally and immediately assess what develops on the football field in front of them? On an Andrew Peerman run for a first down on UVA’s first TD drive both of these Einstein’s could not grasp the OBVIOUS development and concept of “the ground causing a fumble”.

12:217m – UVA 0 UNC 0
Marvin Austin doesn’t start for Carolina? Really? I thought that he was the next Warren Sapp? Gotta love Lincoln Financial Sports. Evidently, UVA’s defense only plays with 1 DT and 1 DE on the defensive line and with only 9 players on defense.

Apparently, you can. UVa ought to be getting points out of this. That’s embarrassing for the officials.

  2. statered 09/15/2007 at 2:35 PM #

This is crazy – officials trying to steal three from UVA. Replay shows clearly it is good.

  3. noah 09/15/2007 at 2:39 PM #

I’ve never seen a review on a FG before. That’s utterly disgraceful.

  4. noah 09/15/2007 at 2:43 PM #

Yates to Hakeem Nicks for 53 yards and a TD.

UVa’s defenders apparently believe that the best way to defend the pass is to stay 15 feet away from the receivers.

  5. noah 09/15/2007 at 2:49 PM #

Jeez…UVa’s backup QB hits the receiver in the hands….wrong place..

    Hands…ground…same thing.

  6. noah 09/15/2007 at 2:55 PM #

End of the third…UNC driving, UVa still up 19-14

  7. noah 09/15/2007 at 2:57 PM #

Wow….Chris Long with a big interception. Huge.

  8. noah 09/15/2007 at 3:03 PM #

UVa gets to the five…and now they’re steadily moving backwards.

    The Cavs are endzone-phobic.

  9. noah 09/15/2007 at 3:03 PM #

Wow…Ohio up on VPI 7-0 in the second quarter.

  10. noah 09/15/2007 at 3:07 PM #

    Another FG. 22-14.

  11. noah 09/15/2007 at 3:10 PM #

Okay, that might be the worst kick return in the history of football.

UVa boots the ball along the ground, UNC allows it to roll all the way back to inside the 10 before picking it up and then managed to get tackled at the eight.

Hey, what’s that thing rolling along the ground over there? Should we get it?

  12. noah 09/15/2007 at 3:13 PM #

    Fuuuummbbblle!!!!

    UVa’s ball.

  13. noah 09/15/2007 at 3:18 PM #

5:42 in the game, UVa’s got it, midfield. First down.

  14. noah 09/15/2007 at 3:20 PM #

Under five to go…the UVa QB is still taking stupid sacks.

  15. noah 09/15/2007 at 3:25 PM #

3:35 (after the clock didn’t run) and UNC will have the ball somewhere inside their own 20.

  16. noah 09/15/2007 at 3:28 PM #

They fixed the clock….3:30 to go.

  17. noah 09/15/2007 at 3:28 PM #

ANOTHER dropped interception. God, these UVa DBs SUCK.

  18. noah 09/15/2007 at 3:29 PM #

Under three minutes to go. Hakeem Nicks catches it up around the UNC 40.

  19. noah 09/15/2007 at 3:30 PM #

UVa isn’t getting any pressure on Yates at all. 2:37 to go, UNC in Uva territory.

  20. noah 09/15/2007 at 3:31 PM #

Carolina about to score…they’ve got inside the five, about 2:15 to go.

UVa’s secondary is as bad as anything I’ve ever seen in my life.

  21. RabidWolf 09/15/2007 at 3:32 PM #

Time for the defense to step up

  22. noah 09/15/2007 at 3:33 PM #

Two minutes to go. UNC has it, first and goal from inside the five.

  23. noah 09/15/2007 at 3:34 PM #

    Touchdown UNC.

The TE didn’t have anyone within about 10 yards of him.

  24. RabidWolf 09/15/2007 at 3:34 PM #

Nice play…UVa secondary sucks! The LBs dont look good either!

  25. noah 09/15/2007 at 3:35 PM #

They didn’t get the two-point conversion. UVa managed to knock it down. The first thing RESEMBLING defense this quarter.
