Javier Gonzalez Undergoes Surgery To Repair Ligament Damage To Shooting Thumb

By NC State Media Relations
NC State head men’s basketball coach Sidney Lowe has announced that point guard Javier Gonzalez underwent surgery on Saturday to repair a ligament in his right (shooting) thumb. Gonzales suffered the injury on Friday during a skill workout when he dove for a loose ball.

Gonzalez, a 6-0 freshman from Carolina, Puerto Rico, will be in a cast for six weeks and will be out of action for a total of 10-12 weeks.

“This is a tough thing for Javi to have to go through so early in his career,” said Lowe. “But we will look forward to his return early in the season and know that he will be able to contribute to our team this year.

    “Degand was Cliff Crawford II”

Please tell me you jest. I’m not sure I can survive 3 more years of that.

Hopefully, he means “fast, can’t shoot” and not “fast, can’t shoot, apparently suffered serious head trauma”

  3. PackGirl 09/24/2007 at 6:04 PM #

This could be a blessing in disguise. Maybe Javi will learning to dribble and shoot with his left hand over the 10-12 weeks and will be “amphibious” by the time he comes back.

Make that fast, can’t shoot, good defender – and I’ll be a happy man.

I have a feeling that in the important Nov-Dec games, we’ll be calling him “Forty Minute Farnold.”

  5. redfred2 09/24/2007 at 7:02 PM #

I screwed up and typed Tracy Smith earlier, but I had heard the same as ^Mr O did about Johnny Thomas.

  6. noah 09/25/2007 at 9:17 AM #

I asked about JT and was told that “big surprise” meant “will play five to 10 minutes” rather than “won’t play at all.”

    Anyone else heard differently?

  7. Mr O 09/25/2007 at 9:43 AM #

Noah: I was just refering to this comment from one of the bloggers here:

The news of Johnny Thomas’ season ending injury has now hit the national wires.. Any injury to any player – no matter what uniform they wear – is a tragedy. This injury to Thomas’ knee is particularly nerve racking due to Thomas’ extreme athleticism as evidenced by his recently measured 43.5 inch vertical leap. Evidently, JT was turning heads with better-than-expected basketball skills since arriving in Raleigh and those around the team expected him to earn more playing time than was originally projected. Ultimately, however, if there is a year for JT to have to redshirt then this is the best of them as the Wolfpack has plenty of help on the wing with Fells, Grant, Marques Johnson, Dennis Horner and even Brandon Costner.

I would say you are correct Noah. 5 minutes a game was more than I expected Thomas to play. I have heard Johnson is really strong….a very big point gaurd and plays big. I hope Degand can handle the load up until Johnson gets back but I have a feeling that Johnson could be out PG at the end of the year, especially with Javi being out for about as long as Johnson will be.

  9. noah 09/25/2007 at 10:12 AM #

We’ll probably get Gonzalez and Johnson right around the same time, won’t we?

  10. packgrad93 09/25/2007 at 10:39 AM #

^ probably. back to 1 PG until then.

Good to see the Curse of the Valvano is alive and well. We’d be like post-World Series Ring Bosox fans without it.

^Certainly you mean “happy” or “elated” as opposed to walking around with an undeserved sense of accomplishment and entitlement (with a side of unwarranted arrogance)??

Yes, I’m feeling overly sarcastic today.

You have an injured recruit with definite athleticism and apparently some BB skills to, yet people say it’s all OK, we can do fine without him. All I can figure is that those people just can’t get past the Sendek theory on playing time for freshmen, and what they weren’t allowed to contribute in the past.

It seems some NOW think we have talent to burn for this upcoming season. That is a remarkable feat for the new coaching staff considering what those same folks were saying before the start of the season last year.

“Sendek theory on playing time for freshmen, and what they weren’t allowed to contribute in the past.”

you mean like Inge, Kelley, Harrington, Wilkins, Melvin, Hodge, Powell, IE, Watkins, Atsur, Brack?

    Hey Cedar

  16. redfred2 09/26/2007 at 6:42 PM #

I could rattle off a list like Bennerman, Simmons, McCauley, and so on…

I also wonder how all of the sunshiners are comfortable still bringing up names like Damien Wilkins, and especially Josh Powell? So those are proud examples of success???

We’re different, apparently you were more than thrilled with the play and the overall results from back then, so more power to you. As for me, I’ve been waiting for just this exact moment for what seems like an eternity, so I’ll take the future, and hopefully I’ll soon forget that flat line lapse in time that you consider to be your glory days of Wolfpack basketball.

The silver lining of all this is that Coach Lowe and his staff are really going to push Fells more to consistently handle pressure on the offensive side of the ball. Last year they dogged him to play the best perimeter defense he could possibly muster. He came from a zone oriented high school program and had many bad habits that needed correcting (Sendek’s one saving grace was outstanding defensive principles so he was headed in the right direction).

By the end of the season he really blossomed into a capable defender. Now the staff he coach him up into a role that complimnets the PG in a way that effectively makes use of Lowe’s play calling and a stellar stable of studs we role out on the front line.

The beggining of the season we will bumpy at times, but I’m sure this staff and Fells will finish of strong as they did last season in terms of setting goals and achieving them. If all goes well Fells could fit in that Cory Brewer mold by ’09 as a game changer on both ends. Let’s hope so, Go Pack!

“I could rattle off a list like Bennerman, Simmons, McCauley, and so on…”

Cam wasn’t ready to play as a frosh. Ben was playing behind Ced, duh.

    just correcting ignorant comments

You’re right, a player Cam wasn’t ever going to be ready, and never had any opportunity to play his style of (REAL) basketball in that bullshit offense. Some other scheme and he could have contributed early and then flourished later. Never happened. I’d love to have that kid back right now.

As for McCauley, you are exactly right again, he couldn’t play at the top of key with his back to the basket. But then, neither could the guy McCauley was supposedly playing behind, Cedric Simmons.

Except for a few times and in brief periods am imposing physical specimen like Cedric Simmons, was basically a none factor while at NC State. Same with the use of Bennerman’s outrageous athleticism.

BTW, I know this an “ignorant” question to ask, but just how does anyone play BEHIND someone else, in a POSITIONLESS offense?

  21. packgrad93 09/28/2007 at 11:23 AM #

“Some other scheme and he could have contributed early and then flourished later.”

    he DID flourish later.

“Except for a few times and in brief periods am imposing physical specimen like Cedric Simmons, was basically a none factor while at NC State.”

did you watch Ced’s 2nd season when he started?

“I know this an “ignorant” question to ask, but just how does anyone play BEHIND someone else, in a POSITIONLESS offense?”

you’re correct, it is an ignorant question.

Thumb injuries are tough, especially for a ball-handler. Good luck to him in his recovery.

If Javier comes back about the same time Marques Johnson is eligible, he might have a hard time getting playing time (unless I’m assuming too much about MJ, I’m really going on his recruiting ranking/info from before he went to TN). That said, with only 13 scholarships, coaches frequently avoid redshirting a kid who is not considered a likely major contributor at the end of his career.

  23. redfred2 09/28/2007 at 1:14 PM #

Simmons was as dominate a player as he should have been in college, and Bennerman flourished. What a friggin joke.

Did you ever play basketball or have you been watching the sport long enough to even realize when potential is being wasted? I didn’t think so. I’d say you developed your interest in basketball, oh, around ten years ago or so maybe.

    That’s it, it’s undeniable, packgrad93 is cedar.

  24. packgrad93 09/28/2007 at 3:08 PM #

^ I’m sure I’ve played/play more bball that most on here. Ced did dominate his soph yr before he got doubled every game. Cam flourished his sr year. Quit letting your hatred blind you.

  25. redfred2 09/28/2007 at 4:58 PM #

^Hey, I’m not saying that both of those guys didn’t show flashes of being dominating players, and they both could have, and should have been. The FACTS are though, that they weren’t, not while in Raleigh anyway.
