Javier Gonzalez Undergoes Surgery To Repair Ligament Damage To Shooting Thumb

By NC State Media Relations
NC State head men’s basketball coach Sidney Lowe has announced that point guard Javier Gonzalez underwent surgery on Saturday to repair a ligament in his right (shooting) thumb. Gonzales suffered the injury on Friday during a skill workout when he dove for a loose ball.

Gonzalez, a 6-0 freshman from Carolina, Puerto Rico, will be in a cast for six weeks and will be out of action for a total of 10-12 weeks.

“This is a tough thing for Javi to have to go through so early in his career,” said Lowe. “But we will look forward to his return early in the season and know that he will be able to contribute to our team this year.

We start the year with 9 scholarship players making the foolish assumption that we won’t lose anyone else. It looks like Javy will return about the same time as Johnson gets eligible. Hopefully, Degand is ready from the start to run the team.

This could be a lot worse but I hate that Javy is not going to be able to play during such an important practice period.

Let’s hope he can still practice.. at least defense. Maybe he can still dribble? At least he can run and stay in shape.

For a freshman point guard coming into the ACC, there could be worse things than doing nothing but sharpening the ballhandling skills of your off hand for three months.

    Wow.

    Shocking.

    No, really – I’m floored.

On a serious note, I hate it for this young man. Here’s to a speedy, painless recovery.

I’m not hitting the panic button just YET, but DAMNIT!!!

I guess that pretty much ends all speculation as to who the staff has *decided on* at the PG spot.

I don’t care what anyone said after Tracy Smith’s earlier injury, or his ability to earn possible PT this season, we’re just one season removed from what was possibly the shallowest talent pool in the nation. Same goes with this injury Gonzales now. Sidney Lowe has set the table and already has the program pointing it’s sights higher than it has in decades. It isn’t quite fair that he doesn’t have all of his assets healthy and ready to go, whether he uses them or not.

But then, if it’s too good to be true,…

  6. noah 09/23/2007 at 6:34 PM #

When did Tracy Smith get hurt?? Or did you mean Johnny Thomas?

I’m not worried about two guys who weren’t going to contribute heavy minutes. The staff had been telling people that both of these guys were long-term projects…

I’ll worry when a starter gets hurt.

    Well, fuck.

See, I told you guys Degand was going to start! I bet Lowe keeps him in a protective bubble until the season opener (and between games).

It never ends for State. The mountain is as steep as ever, but we will appreciate it more once we reach the summit.

I’m afraid Degand is a long range prospect. Most scouts thought that he was a lightning quick SG, rail thin body, with no consistent 3 point range. We will see how the coach’s have helped him along soon enough I guess.

This is why as state fans the most stupid thing we can do is be cocky.

hopefully Gavin Grant kept his stellar PG skills sharp

“This is why as state fans the most stupid thing we can do is be cocky.”

    Or even confident.

/\ Or even optimisitic. 10-12 weeks is January, maybe he will see some time, but I might try a redshirt if Johsnon is even remotely capable. Hand injuries can heal quicker than expected, or at least heal to a point where a man can play through the pain.

I have not heard this. Are you saying they think Degand can get it done?

BTW this is annoyoing. How can we have so many guys keep getting hurt.

  16. newt 09/24/2007 at 9:19 AM #

I say kudos to the staff for bringing in 3 point guards this year. People get injured every year on every team, which is why you need depth at every position.

  17. SuperStuff 09/24/2007 at 9:19 AM #

I thought it was Dukes turn to get the injury bug this year.

  18. noah 09/24/2007 at 9:44 AM #

“I have not heard this. Are you saying they think Degand can get it done?”

I’m not saying he can or cannot. I’m saying that the fifth-hand info that was passed on to me via a nasty rumor, a bathroom wall scribble, two soup cans and a wax-string pulled between a treehouse and a upstairs bedroom window indicated that Gonzalez wasn’t the guy who was going to be putting a lot of pressure on Degand and that his role (and J. Thomas’ role) was going to be of the secondary, five-minute a game, spell-a-guy-and-try-not-to-fall-down variety.

There are those here with much better info, so perhaps they would like to correct this.

  19. PackGirl 09/24/2007 at 10:14 AM #

Actually, if he’s only out 10 weeks, he could be back by Dec 1. He’ll miss the Old Spice Classic (Thanksgiving weekend) but then we don’t play again until Dec 8 (at ECU), which would be 11 weeks. Looks like we could see some of Gavin at PG in November. Sheesh, I though we were done with that!

  20. RochesterRedWolf 09/24/2007 at 11:40 AM #

did Sidney use up all his eligibility?? (hahaha). Poor Javy, get well kid.

“It isn’t quite fair that he doesn’t have all of his assets healthy and ready to go,”

it’s been that way for NCSU bball for years

  22. packbackr04 09/24/2007 at 12:54 PM #

    why god, why

  23. packbackr04 09/24/2007 at 12:54 PM #

was torturing Jon Kitna not enough for you

  24. Mr O 09/24/2007 at 1:37 PM #

Some of the more connected posters at Packpride were saying M. Johnson was likely going to start not too long ago. Basically, they were saying he was more of a distributor of the basketball and Degand was Cliff Crawford II.

Of course, I also thought I saw it mentioned on here that J. Thomas was a big surprise also and was expected to play meaningful minutes.

  25. newt 09/24/2007 at 2:08 PM #

On paper, there’s no reason to think that the PG would be anyone other than Marques Johnson, who is bigger, more experienced, and was more highly rated than the other two.

Plus, Lowe has described Johnson as a “run-the-show” type point guard, which is exactly what Lowe has said he wants from the position.
