Hot Weather Causes Health Problems at N.C. State Game (Updated Sun)

Raleigh — About 100 people at the N.C. State game, and 11 who played defense at Carter-Finley Stadium were treated Saturday afternoon for heat exhaustion and dehydration.

It was definitely HOT today…but, I’ve been to much hotter. However, I have never been to a game this hot with an organization where the ENTIRE STADIUM was SOLD OUT of water before halftime!!!

Absurd!!! Completely inexcusable!!! To quote NeverQuitPacker from Pack Pride’s conversation on this topic:

Simple fact is that Athletics Programs such as ours are multi, multi-million dollar business operations being run by people who do not have the experience or proven skills to run such operations. Most are former jocks or career state “webe”employees who are fine work-a-day folk, but are WAY out of their league when it comes to management of an operation this size.

Just for a moment -stop thinking of this as an indication of the inconvenience stupidity and DANGEROUSNESS of this situation.

Think about this as an indication of just how poorly mis-managed so much of the department that you never hear about must be.

We ALWAYS hear about the importance of money to Athletics Department. On a day like today they literally left tens of thousands of dollars on the table because of their ineptitude. You can only wonder where else ‘they’ fail to maximize revenue and control expenses (see any year’s woman’s basketball schedule and travel itinerary).

Heck…just a few days like today and MAYBE they could have enough money to start building the new concourse, entrance gates and bathrooms on the East Side that were promised with C-F expansion but seem to have been forgotten.

I wonder if Lee has asked the player’s parents to bring juice boxes and snacks for after the football games? Hopefully he’s smart enough to put one of the player’s moms in charge of scheduling whose week it is.

I once saw a 1pm Miami-New England game in Miami in September. Hotter than the 5th layer of hell (notthe 7th, just the 5th). And Pro Player Stadium (as it was called at the time) sold out of water by halftime. They knew it was going to be hot, but the ater sold out anyway. Such things happen. Any blame should be directed to that nutless AD Fowlup that doesn’t stand up and fight against noon games in September. Every State fan knows a noon game in C-F will be hot as blazes, but we get 1-2 a year anyway. And that is the excrement that comes out of the north end of a south bound bull.

College FB is basically owned lock, stock and barrell by the TV networks, that is why there are noon games. TV says jump and the schools say “how high?” If ESPN wanted to show a game at 3 AM local time in Baghdad it would happen.

Anybody else notice that the cups smelled terrible? I thought someone in our section had pooped their pants and we finally figured out it was the plastic cups we were smelling. It was so foul that had it not been blazing hot I wouldn’t have drank out of it.

YES! We had the same experience in Section 12.

    The memories . . . .

I remember the only water you could get at CF was from those water fountains with the porcelain catch bowls. That was some nasty tasting water, but it was free.

Still had the same problem with them – not enough of them. Seems like there was only 10-20 scattered around the stadium.

Are there not numerous water fountains in the stadium now ore am I making that up? I can’t imagine anyone would complain they couldn’t get water because I pretty sure I’ve seen upwards of 50 or so silver water fountains in the stadium. Take you plastic bottle and fill it up with water from a fountain, or die of heat exposure your choice but I would think NC State alumni would be able to figure that out.

wouldn’t you think they would check the weather and DOUBLE your order of water? Not like it’s gonna go bad if it’s not sold. Plus there’s another game coming up.

Anyone remember back in the day when we had vendors roaming the stadium steps selling drinks and peanuts? What happend to that!

I agree TTT. This whole topic is a little to tar-holish. Take your stinky plastic cup to the undersized bathroom, put in under the faucet and turn on the water and fill up the cup.

The water coming out of that bathroom faucet is 1000 times better tasting than what came out of those fountains back in the 70’s.

“We ran out of bottled water by haftime and I’m pissed . . . ” This is freaking football.

That’s the problem with the Offensive line. They are wussy’s used to their mommies doing everthing for them. We need some mean MF’s down there on the line. Some that are willing to drink water that came from somewhere besides a bottle.

^ The issues about getting stinky water from the tap are fair points…which is one of the reasons why we made the point about how bad the BUSINESS side of this situation was in addition to the health risk.

Regardless of the health risks…it is just stupid to have such poor execution on something this simple and therefore scares the hell out of you when extrapolate this into other parts of the university and department.

“wouldn’t you think they would check the weather and DOUBLE your order of water?”

Probably not. As I recall, they sell Dasani at State games? The Coca-Cola vendor probably has a standing order each home game for C-F that’s based on average sales for the previous year.

Selling out is not a big deal if you’re the concessions manager. NOT selling the extra 20,000 bottles that you ordered is probably a nightmarish situation. I don’t think there’s any storage space and I doubt that the coke guy really wants to come BACK and pick that stuff up (when it’s been all crudded up and handled).

None of this makes for a good gameday experience for the fans, but that’s not a priority for the concessions manager.

Complain about the noon start, or the team’s performance or the lines to get in the stadium (where those not temporary searches imposed after 9/11 that are still going on- never give up your liberty). To complain about having to drink tap water is very wussyish.

  12. DRW 09/24/2007 at 12:57 PM #

Apparently, the Athletics Dept doesn’t think they did that bad a job. I just got off the phone with the Asst AD in charge of gameday operations, and she said, ‘Well we sold out of 17,000 bottles of waters”. I think we did the best we could” I wanted to say, Hey, the stadium seats nearly 60,000 people.

[…] See our previous entry with commentary on this topic by clicking here. As the N.C. State football team was falling to Clemson Saturday, there was an even bigger problem in the stands — dehydration. This problem was not confined to just a few people. Approximately 100 people had to be treated, with six having to be transported to Rex Hospital. Luckily, there were no serious injuries, but next time temperatures rise, the situation could be different. Students and other Pack fans sitting in Carter-Finley had few options to cool off and hydrate on Saturday afternoon. The lone option was to buy a $3 bottle of water, which all sold out by halftime. There weren’t any other mechanisms by which fans could cool themselves off or hydrate until bottled water was replenished at the end of the third quarter. These were factors that caused fans to become dehydrated, suffer heat stroke or exhaustion. Those that come to Carter-Finley should be provided with options of how to keep cool and hydrated. The health of those who attend games must be a high priority to game operations officials. […]

[…] I understand the position I’m in on these matters, sitting up there in the air-conditioned press box working the game. It’s easy to claim “Joe, you’re out of touch.” Fair, but that’s why I rely on level-headed State fans that I personally know, emails and blogs. Two of the best Wolfpack blogs have recently addressed the issues, and paint a rather weak gameday experience for Carter-Finley Stadium.
