10 Points Against Louisville (UofL 29, NC State 10)

The Cardinals’ secondary has been burned on long passes all season. So what does the Wolfpack do? Come out throwing short slants, screens and bootleg passes to the tight end in the first half. Go figure.

To characterize TOB’s tenure as “5 games” is misleading. He has been here 9 months. We’ve gone through spring drills, offseason conditioning, fall practice and then the 5 games. Based on their reputation, I expected our coaching staff to make noticeable improvements in fundamentals and toughness during the months leading up to our 1st game. Personallly, I haven’t seen it. I’ll readily admit that significant progress in these areas may have still yielded a 1-4 start. But it would be something to hang our hats on. As it is, I think the only things to be optimistic about are all BC-related.

At this point it’s not about the record – it’s about the seeing some tangible progress. A popular notion back to the InfoPack days is that it’s not just about a win or a loss but rather how you win or lose. Right now, we’re losing ugly and many of the things we thought would be fixed (ie, turnover margin) through better coaching are trending in the wrong direction.

The team that TOB built is 5 and 0 this year with less of a coach.

That’s how I’m looking at it. I actually enjoyed the game on Saturday. Had a great tailgate, and my 4 year old only heard one curse word all day – on the replay of the Andre Brown fumble we challanged.

I was dissapointed that Louisville ran the ball. I had regressed to just hoping to see a future NFL quarterback at his best. Oh well.

What can you do. Our offense is killing our defense. A one point during the second quarter they Louisville had had the ball for 19 minutes compared to our 4 minutes. You can expect a any defense to perform well in the second have with numbers like that.

This entire line of conversation is hilarious. TOB is not Jesus. He does not work miracles. Last year, we should have only won one game. The rest were flukes. That was Chucks talent, winning the fluke and showing up for games where the other team was better.

    THIS TEAM IS BAD!
There are far too many things wrong with this team to think that TOB should be winning. One thing some of you guys are forgetting. Some of these players may have uncoachable errors. They may be incapable of improvement, but there has to be somebody in the position. If we still have this conversation in 3 years or so, then we have a problem. For now, we need patience and the team needs support.

Let me put this in a post by itself:

The team that TOB built is 5 and 0 this year with less of a coach.

    “improvement in fundamentals and toughness”

Like what? Fundamentally….tell me what we are doing wrong.

Don’t tell me, “Don’t fumble the ball.” Tell me what Andre Brown is doing, from a fundamental standpoint, that is incorrect. Don’t tell me, “Don’t throw interceptions,” tell me what Harrison Beck is doing wrong.

I don’t see “fundamental” problems. I see a lack of talent. I see a right tackle who isn’t quick or fast enough to get back to a spot to cut off a rushing defender. I see offensive linemen who aren’t powerful enough to sustain their blocks. I see running backs having to try and get in the way of those guys and quarterbacks sprinting for their lives and throwing on the run and off their backfoot to avoid getting killed. I see players who are forced to make exceptional plays to overcome the routine ones their less-talented teammates cannot execute.

Against Clemson, we blitzed our linebackers and they just got swallowed up. They aren’t fast enough to get around people and they aren’t strong enough to get off their blocks. That meant that people like Audi Augstine were suddenly having to cover people like CJ Spiller. And if you think a linebacker on a receiver is a mismatch….try putting a defensive end on one of the fastest, shiftiest backs in the country.

People talk about our DBs not being able to tackle. That’s not fundamentals. Of course they can’t tackle. They weren’t recruited to tackle. They’ve NEVER been able to tackle. Deion Sanders never learned to tackle….was that because Bobby Bowden and Jimmy Johnson and Jack Del Rio and Marvin Lewis and all the other coaches in his career couldn’t teach him fundamentals? Or is it that he was never supposed to be a big hitter…but was supposed to be a ball hawk?

I saw a comment on another board that tried to dispute the notion that there’s no one to play on the off. line but cutting and pasting all of the names from the off. line section of the roster and saying, “But all of these guys are there! Looky! Tons of numbers!” What they failed to notice was that about 10 of the guys they listed were walk-ons and another 10 were true or redshirt freshmen.

Matt Kushner dropped three passes on Saturday. Is that fundamentals? Or is it just the kind of performance you’d expect from a third-string TE who was recruited to play defensive tackle?

So…explain to me about the fundamentals.

BTW…speaking of quick turnarounds and “fundamentals” — is Lou Holtz a good coach? He must be. I’ve heard all kinds of stories about how State was 3-8 one year and the next year we were world-beaters under Lou Holtz. So that guy must be some kind of good.

So, apparently Lou Holtz FORGOT how to coach in 1999 when he took over at South Carolina and went 0-11. Yes, it was in the SEC…but he still got stomped by a mediocre NC State squad, ECU, Miss. State, Vandy and Kentucky. They scored 87 points all year. Did they have talent? Yeah.

How about John Abraham at defensive end? Remember Derek Watson? Superprep All American tailback. Arturo Freeman, a really good safety who played with the Dolphins. Phil Petty wasn’t a bad QB…certainly better than anyone we’ve got. Kalimba Edwards and Andre Goodman were on that team too.

Noah is spot on here. And yes, I absolutely mean it – a complete free pass for the first 2 years.

What those stats show, if you try to read them, is that one guy is making considerably more mistakes than the other.

Yea, and you conveniently try to forget that there is more data available than just this season. I wonder why you choose to ignore last year’s stats…..could it be because they show that DE makes plenty of mistakes?

At this point, it appears obvious to me that changing QB’s is like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

“At this point, it appears obvious to me that changing QB’s is like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.”

    Indeed.

Aren’t our penalties down? What, 5 for 31 yrds in the last game?
Is the carrying on after big plays down?
Both of those would be symptomatic of an improved attitude from CTC’s day. I think they are good signs.

  11. primacyone 10/01/2007 at 2:05 PM #

The deck chairs have been changed. Daniel Evans to start against Florida State. I predict another injured QB before the game is over.

  12. Wulfpack 10/01/2007 at 2:08 PM #

Va, so this year’s stats don’t mean anything at all?

Hell, throw out the stats. Beck is throwing TO the other team. See Kragthorpe’s quote on that…

There are bad options and there are worse options. This is simply damage control. By no means is Evans the answer. But if we are going to try to win another game this year, Beck sure as hell isn’t the guy.

  13. VaWolf82 10/01/2007 at 3:35 PM #

Va, so this year’s stats don’t mean anything at all?

Of course they do. But even with all of the INT’s, Beck was still the QB until he got hurt. That tells me that TOB and Bible reached the same conclusion that noah (I think) summarized earlier. At least Beck has the athleticism and strength to scramble and make a play on the run. The results aren’t always what you want….but at least it is an attempt.

Seeing what UCF did to DE should give everyone a preview of what teams, starting with FSU, will do as long as he is in there.

^I missed that game. Oh well, hopefully we can keep it close. I am so tired of saying that…
