10 Points Against Louisville (UofL 29, NC State 10)

The Cardinals’ secondary has been burned on long passes all season. So what does the Wolfpack do? Come out throwing short slants, screens and bootleg passes to the tight end in the first half. Go figure.

Maybe I missed the earlier comments, but let’s be fair, how about Lee and the water situation? What an astonishing turn around!!!

  2. noah 09/30/2007 at 3:31 PM #

    8-1 Marlins.

  3. noah 09/30/2007 at 4:04 PM #

Joey Devine in for the Braves.

This is the end of an era for us southerners. We all grew up watching the Braves on WTBS. I, for one, will miss it.

  4. noah 09/30/2007 at 4:07 PM #

And there goes Devine. 1/3 of an inning, one hit allowed, the runner on first is his.

Mets out of playoffs makes me very happy. But are there really not going to be any Braves games on TBS? What the fuck?

  6. noah 09/30/2007 at 5:23 PM #

Nope. Time Warner’s destruction of my childhood is complete. (yes, I know they already sold both the Braves and TBS)

Next year, TBS will have a game-of-the-week that will be from among all the teams. They will no longer be the “local” Braves carrier. The Braves will have 40 games on something called “Peachtree TV,” which will, I think, be what was once considered WTBS locally in Atlanta. It won’t be available through cable.

They showed about 50 clips after the game and I think I saw every one of them.

  7. tvp1 09/30/2007 at 5:38 PM #

I still have a hard time believing that the Braves won’t be on TBS next year…

Noah, I’d add Dejuan Morgan to your list of players who’d see time on a top 20 team. He appears to be the only player on the defense who can consistently tackle people. But that’s about it.

I know it is hard for people who are spending a good amount of their hard-earned money to watch another year of terrible football. But I made a point of watching our DL and LB most of the game (we know our Oline is bad). It’s hard to describe the play of the front 7…”washed out” is the best description I have. On many plays they were swallowed up under a sea of white and it was like they weren’t there.

I’m amazed at the people blaming TOB. It must be because so many of them liked Amato as a person and don’t want to lay it all at his feet. But when your lines are consistently blown away, there is little the coaches can do.

I am fearful about the lack of talent on the D-line going forward. Perhpas we should switch to the 3-4 next year…

  8. VaWolf82 09/30/2007 at 5:42 PM #

I’m not sold on the 3-4 for college teams in general…..and certainly not for State with the issues at LB.

  9. EverettBeez 09/30/2007 at 6:07 PM #

Gosh, how much worse could the weekend get? I thought the new TBS program started this year, and wasn’t going to get worse. Man. I’ve been watching the Braves – or at least I’ve had them on in the background since tbs came to raleigh – replacing some super station in charlotte. TBS, and TTG from DC. Well, I guess I’l just need to go over the more often I guess.

I don’t have anything to add about football, other then its going to be along couple of years.

  10. tvopack 09/30/2007 at 7:11 PM #

Wolfpack lost in all games this week: Football, soccer (m&w), and volleyball.

  11. GAWolf 09/30/2007 at 7:59 PM #

I was going to make a special effort to thank all of my friends who skipped a game this year to attend my wedding. It looks like they should probably thank me for the opportunity at an excuse to skip one.

    VaWolf,

    2007 Stats

    Beck – 5 games played, 53.5% completions, 2 TD, 9 INT.
    Evans – 5 games played, 66% completions, 3 TD, 2 INT.

There is a big difference here. Not saying he is a better overall QB, I am saying he is a smarter, more efficient QB i.e. damage control. I do think the staff will make the change regardless of Beck’s injury status. IMHO, this job is Evans’ to lose from here on out.

  13. VaWolf82 09/30/2007 at 9:02 PM #

Did you also support Herb? The favorite stat analysis from them was to cherry-pick whatever stat sthey could find that howed that Herb was as good as we should expect.

Looking at the whole picture, there is absolutely no reason to think that DE can be an effective QB. His problems are not correctable and Beck’s MIGHT be. He’s already lost the job once…I expect it to happen again.

  14. vtpackfan 09/30/2007 at 9:26 PM #

DE vs. HB (or JB or the shortstop) = CTC vs. TOB

DE would probably put us in a better position to win ONE more game this year. Just like CTC would have probably gotten ONE more W this year than TOB and his staff (Wofford and …ofcourse FSU).

We want to be better in the future, so think about that crap and we can debate it.

  15. john of sparta 09/30/2007 at 9:35 PM #

did the pack win anything this week?

    did the Bravos?
    first WPTF then TBS.

might as well give up on broadCAST
media and focus on broadBAND media.

  16. Par Shooter 09/30/2007 at 9:44 PM #

I understand that we don’t have a lot right now, but I cannot for the life of me see one positive thing that this staff has done for our program at this point. I was hoping to see some improvement in fundamentals and football IQ after spring practice, offseason conditioning, fall practice and nearly half a season. I see no discernable difference from the end of last season except that we actually seem worse. I didn’t think we’d win 6 this year of anything foolish like that, but I expected much better execution that what I’ve seen. It seems that the popular notion is that TOB is responsible for absolutely nothing for the next 2 years. REALLY?? I say that’s garbage. He and his staff are responsible for trying to get the most of what they’ve got and at least trying to put a fundamentally sound team on the field. If an offensive lineman is in the right spot and just gets bulled back to the QB then it’s a talent thing. If he just stands there and lets a guy blow by then it’s something else. Hell, I’m talented enough to at least have a guy trip over me as he steamrolls me. Our guys don’t even care enough to do that.

For you guys who say he gets a pass, what the hell is he supposed to do for the next 2 years? Is his sole responsibility to get 2 good recruiting classes? That’s never really been his forte altough I’ve been very happy so far with this class. Face it, we hired these guys in large part because of their ability to develop guys who aren’t 4 or 5* recruits. There’s no time like the present to actually see a player on our team (anyone) improve or progress.

  17. Mr O 09/30/2007 at 9:47 PM #

par shooter: If TOB did not have a decade of success at the BCS level prior to coaching at State, then questioning the current staff would be fair game. But TOB has a record, so questioning what they are doing five games into his tenure is a reach.

  18. wolfonthehill 09/30/2007 at 9:56 PM #

^ Damn, Par Shooter… when you’re drunk at a game, I forget that you’re capable of such coherent, thoughtful analysis. 🙂

And I happen to agree – let’s stop the sugarcoating and absolution of blame. TOB was NOT because he’s a master recruiter… but we’re now saying that he can’t succeed till his recruits are here. I think we’re changing the rules on the fly, because we’re afraid to seem like “those” NC State fans who are perceived to be impatient.

No one reasonable is going to be calling for any coaches’ heads, but it’s not at all unfair to question the staff’s effectiveness so far… and I’d give them a D at best through 5 games.

(And to the repeated mockery of deep “jump balls” being a legitimate offensive strategy yesterday – I will stand by my assertion that such a gameplan, whereby Beck heaved it 40 yards downfield at least one play out of three, would have given us the best chance to win. I damn well guarantee we score more than 10 if we do it.)

  19. packgrad2000 09/30/2007 at 11:08 PM #

You guys forget the fact that we have something like 70 scholarship players on the field. You also forget the fact that talent wins 95% of the time. Basketball programs can be turned around in a year. Football programs generally cannot. You also forget that our program has been in a downward spiral for two years now. Now you expect TOB to fix that after 5 games? By what are you judging their effectiveness? Who are you comparing them to? Do you really think CTC or anyone else in the country would be better than 1-4 so far? You also need to remember that our schedule thus far has been brutal. You need to judge TOB not by the team he’s coached for 5 games, but by Boston College. The very fact that BC is doing so well points to TOB. Mike O’Cain left NC State in 10x better shape than CTC did. CTC came in to coach Philip Rivers, Koren Robinson, and most importantly, a decent O line. And he still only went 7-5 his first year.
So does TOB get a pass the first 2 years? You’re darn right he does. The way we’re getting beat, it’s fairly simple to see that Steve Spurrier, Nick Saban, or whoever else you want couldn’t win at least 3 of our 4 losses. If you think anyone in the country could do better right now with what they have, then go ahead and keep talking. You’re making a hypothetical arguments not based on facts. The reasonable ones on here are making arguments based on actual, measurable facts: his record at BC and BC’s current success.

“TOB was NOT because he’s a master recruiter… but we’re now saying that he can’t succeed till his recruits are here. I think we’re changing the rules on the fly”
Did you happen to miss all the well-documented entries on the state of our O-line? This isn’t a matter of HIS recruits, it’s a matter of talent. Again, show me a coach in the country (that we could actually get here) that could do a better job.
I think the fact that we’re even joking about “throwing it 40 yards and letting them jump for it” assumes the fact that there is no coaching strategy or effort that would work against the teams we’ve played (aside from UCF) You’re arguing for far fetched coaching strategies because there’s just not much you can coach when you’re getting steam-rolled on both lines.

I am not saying TOB is the best coach in the country; I AM saying it’s difficult to tell how good of a coach he is based on our talent, but a better measure of his coaching ability is to look at BC.

  20. tvp1 09/30/2007 at 11:16 PM #

TOB will coach up the players. But expecting it to happen in 5 games is a total reach.

Maybe I am insane, but as bad as we are and as insurmountable as the problem of nonexistent line play is, I saw a little improvement yesterday.

  21. choppack1 09/30/2007 at 11:36 PM #

Actually, I think parshooter and wolfonthehill make fair points. TOB did a good job at BC – but are we to be impressed by the job he’s done so far?

He’s done an excellent job recruiting, he often seems to say a lot of the right things.

TOB has had some tough breaks since he came to Raleigh, but right now, 5 games into the TOB era – we should at least be a little worried. We’ve played a very difficult schedule thus far – but it won’t get a whole lot easier. To wolfonthehill’s and parshooter’s points – our offense doesn’t look any better. Our QBs don’t look any better. We have more TOs that TDs.

Now, my mind is always open – that’s why I’m not happy w/ what I’ve seen on the field.

Finally, am I the only on this board who thinks that we shouldn’t start D. Evans or H. Beck? I mean, D. Evans just doesn’t have the arm (strange, I don’t think it was this bad his first few starts) and ability to throw on the run or when pressured. H. Beck continues to throw INTs and put up those #s he did at Nebraska before going out of the game injured.

I talked to a friend of mine who does have the opportunity to watch all of QBs practice – and he thinks R. Wilson deserves a chance. He says what I’ve suspected all along – that he’s the best combination of everything a QB needs: smarts, playmaking, sufficient arm strength and accuracy. And quite frankly, this is where TOB concerns me. Playing a kid like Wilson goes against the status quo – he’s small and inexperienced. He’s not the prototype TOB or Bible QB. However, our QB play has been horrid w/ the notable exception of the 2nd half of the UCF game. I really think both Beck and Evans have been given ample opportunity to show they can handle the job.

  22. Lunatic Fringe 09/30/2007 at 11:36 PM #

One thing is for sure…the upcoming break is a good thing for some of us distant fans who have been making the trek to Raleigh. A couple weeks off to get the batteries re-charged before homecoming with UVA is just what the ordered.

  23. Lunatic Fringe 09/30/2007 at 11:38 PM #

^^typo…meant to say… “what the doctor ordered.”

  24. Wulfpack 10/01/2007 at 7:53 AM #

VaWolf, I’m not getting your reference to Herb, just doesn’t relate to anything coherent considering we are talking about football. But for the record, yes, I have supported every coach.

What those stats show, if you try to read them, is that one guy is making considerably more mistakes than the other. Considerably. With the team we have this year, TO’s are, to use TOB’s words Saturday, “shooting us in the foot”.
