10 Points Against Louisville (UofL 29, NC State 10)

The Cardinals’ secondary has been burned on long passes all season. So what does the Wolfpack do? Come out throwing short slants, screens and bootleg passes to the tight end in the first half. Go figure.

Pierson the punter looks llike he continues to struggle. You got to be able to kick it further then 20 yrds.
We actually had more passing yards then L’ville, matched with almost no rushing yards.
Only 5 penalties for 31 yards, a vast improvement over previous years and an improvement for this year.
Gosh though – no matter what you do, how can you compete with 5 turn overs? Three of first 4 drives ending with turnovers?
I didn’t see/listen the game, so I don’t know how they occurred, but dangnabit, when do some people start to pay for mistakes?

Do they not because the cupboard is bare? Or is the Marine way (no offense intended) you make the kid stay in there until he gets it right?

Sorry, I won’t quote your whole post… but saying “play Evans” over Beck is like taking Garfunkel over Simon… or Ruth over Bonds… or, hmm Stupid over Smart…

Pick any other option, but not Evans (no matter how hot you think his sister is) 🙂

Sing it with the choir.. OL..OL…oh.oh.oh….OL..OK that’s where it’s at.

If you’ve gone to bed and aren’t watching the Auburn=Fla game, you are missing some fun,

  4. choppack1 09/29/2007 at 11:42 PM #

EB – It should be noted that Andre Brown had 92 yards. Sooner or later the staff has to take some blame for this kind of crap. TOB gets a chance to bring his guys in, but somehow last years offense is now looking good.

  5. EverettBeez 09/29/2007 at 11:47 PM #

right you are choppack, and Beck is listed as having -16 yrds. They calculate sacks as lost rushing yards?

Damn Auburn is going pull this out.

  6. noah 09/29/2007 at 11:54 PM #

O’Brien takes the rap for this?? Ummm…three years from now, maybe. But why now?

    Fans kill me.

And Florida has been overrated all year. They’ll lose two more games.

  7. EverettBeez 09/29/2007 at 11:56 PM #

haha, my wife is sooo pissed “I hate auburn, I can’t believe I had to cheer for Florida, I feel dirty and used.” You got to love SEC football.
Tubby’s tantrum was a stroke of coaching genius. I think that fired up the defense, and allowed them to get the ball back. Man I HATE Tubberville. I don’t have words for how the wife feels about him.

I am now listening to the whole stadium in Seattle yeah “Tequila” in unison, at the right point in the song. Good job huskies.

  8. Dr. BadgerPack 09/29/2007 at 11:56 PM #

Florida will lose to LSU and probably FSU…

I took Auburn w/ th points… damn, that was a sweater..

  9. noah 09/29/2007 at 11:57 PM #

You know what…don’t answer that. Who cares. You’re right. If O’Brien can’t finish a two-year reclamation project in a month, why’d we hire him?

    Totally right. Forget I asked.

  10. EverettBeez 09/30/2007 at 12:01 AM #

heck no noah, I am not blaming TOB, I am just asking what he is thinking. I am no football Coach – just and under 7s soccer coach (child herder is more like it). When a player keeps making the same mistakes – if they are mistakes and not the result of outstanding defense – what does a football Coach do? In soccer, I’d gotten benched. Does TOB’s Marine Corp background have him thinking benching Beck is not the answer. He’s got to stand in there and learn to get it right. Seems a valid thought process, but darn frustrating for us to watch.

  11. Elrod 09/30/2007 at 12:06 AM #

If memory serves me well, I believe the Curtis Crouch hit, while spectacular (sent the guy’s helmet flying), was not the one that knocked a player silly. On the same play, Marcus Stone cracked back and blind-sided a DL. He stayed on his hands and knees for quite a while and had to be guided to the sidelines.

  12. BJD95 09/30/2007 at 12:14 AM #

Knute Rockne couldn’t win with this group (even if he weren’t dead). Essentially, you will need to look at TOB’s 3rd team as his first real year, since that’s when most of the Amato taint will be flushed from the program.

In Year 4, his first true cass will be juniors and redshirt sophomores. That’s when I think we’ll start seeing a legitimately good football product.

After the 2005 season, SFN told you to be “significantly concerned” about the state of Wolfpacl football. I don’t think anyone truly understood how rotted out it really was. Last season’s stinkfest was just the tip of the iceberg.

Just imagine how bad this would all feel if Amato was still here, and we had another academically suspect class (but still ranked in the 50s or 60s) coming in.

  13. BJD95 09/30/2007 at 12:15 AM #

Stone has always liked to hit people. He was never more animated as a QB than when lining up a guy returning a pick for a smackdown.

Maybe we should try him at LB.

  14. RochesterRedWolf 09/30/2007 at 12:45 AM #

stone must be learning then because against BC, he couldn’t block anyone.

  15. theHowling 09/30/2007 at 12:56 AM #

Went to the game and I just wanted to express my deep hatred of this group of Loserville fans that we had to sit in front of that some State fan sold tickets to. This one chick was so annoying that it was very, very hard to be a good fan or enjoy the game at any point in watching it. Her voice from behind me was piercing my ears to the point that I really wanted to rip out her vocal chords; or at least just tell her to shut the fuck up. I expected to lose this game (even though we had a shot because it’s now quite obvious that Fagthorpe can’t coach his way out of a wet paper sack), but because of dealing with this one wretched, ear-swelling, annoying-voiced, daft vagina, I couldn’t enjoy much.
I am almost tempted to go up there next year and hit them with the karma their dumbass fans served me up with down here.

    Okay, done venting. Fuck Louisville.

  16. JimValvano 09/30/2007 at 2:10 AM #

I went to the game today, observations…

    -Yes…our OL sucks.
-We do not wrap up on tackles. I saw too damn many shoulder charges.
-Andre Brown needs to be careful or he’ll turn into T.A. McLendon. Trying hard is good, but trying so hard you fumble the ball during a good drive while down 16-10 in the third quarter is bad.
-While our OL sucks…I am thinking that we should try someone besides -Beck at quarterback. I thought Evans did well. I mean…better than Beck.
-The stadium was almost completely empty when we went down 22-10 with 11 minutes left in the game.
-The “Dial Club Level” at the game…is very overpriced. While you can get all the food you want. The toilet paper in the bathrooms is cheap. There is no radio broadcast in the bathroom or for that matter televisions. The televisions in the Dial Club are all cheap 19 inch tube projection t.v.’s instead of plasma. I think the food was catered by Sam’s Club. You are so high up you can’t see the logo’s on the helmets. There are 4 elevators for 3 levels of skyboxes which hold 3000 people. You can’t get downstairs and back up during half-time. But…otherwise I tell ya…top of the line.

  17. JimValvano 09/30/2007 at 2:10 AM #

oh yeah…and our Offensive Line sucks

  18. JimValvano 09/30/2007 at 2:10 AM #

Did I happen to mention that our O-Line sucks?

  19. jamieinkorea 09/30/2007 at 7:16 AM #

We suck… We’re terrible. Let’s face it. As much as it pains me to say this, I don’t see us getting back to the top echelon under TOB. It just ain’t gonna happen.

Yeah, I know it’s been 5 games. Come on, though. We’ve had tons of turnovers… Penalties galore… I see no difference between TOB and CTC.

My sad prediction: We’ll lose to Carolina 35-14.

  20. noah 09/30/2007 at 8:18 AM #

“it’s been 5 games. Come on, though. We’ve had tons of turnovers… Penalties galore… I see no difference between TOB and CTC.”

    Five whole games, huh?

Stop, folks. Just….stop. Take one step back. Breathe. Now, think. Someone actually suggested that the problem was that the coach wouldn’t play the fourth-string QB. Just let that wash over you for a minute.

When we started the year, we weren’t a good team. You know how we know this? Because we went 3-9 last year and fired the coach. That’s an extremely strong sign that your team isn’t very good.

For three straight seasons, we’ve had bad recruiting classes ranked in the 50s. When the players you bring into a program aren’t very good, it’s very difficult to get better.

The two classes before the three bad ones were hit heavily with attrition and early departures. So a lot of those good players that we were counting on to lead the team — aren’t here.

Still think there’s talent on this team? Okay…let’s count all the active players on this squad that are good enough to play for a top-20 team. Let’s list them:

    Andre Brown
    Darrell Blackman
    DeMario Pressley
    Alan Michael Cash? Maybe?

    Anyone else? That’s four…out of 85.

We’ve been hit hard with injuries. Anyone disagree with that?

We’re trying to implement radically different schemes on both offense and defense that the current players don’t really fit into. Anyone disagree with that?

So other than a nearly complete lack of talent, decimating injuries and the players being a poor fit for the current schemes….how did you like the play, Mrs. Lincoln?

  21. wolfonthehill 09/30/2007 at 8:19 AM #

It was indeed Marcus who laid one of the two vicious blocks on the above-referenced play. If I play for Louisville, I’m giving the victim major grief next week for getting “knocked the f*** out!!!” by a QB (as Chris Tucker put it in “Friday”).

It’s difficult to put your finger on exactly what’s wrong. I’ll say that, until I heard we’d given up 200 yards on the ground again, I thought the defense had done an admirable job. If you told me before the game that we hold them to 29 points, I’m ecstatic… because Louisville’s D couldn’t keep any random 11 posters on SFN from hanging 30 on them. Sad state of offense we’ve got going…

  22. Dr. BadgerPack 09/30/2007 at 8:33 AM #

Noah- Let’s go one step further: when the number of INACTIVE players who would play for a top 20 team is neary equal to the numbe of active, you know you have a problem.

  23. Wulfpack 09/30/2007 at 9:14 AM #

Thanks for putting into perspective, Noah. I think this season is a wash and the only good that can come of it is that we continue to get embarassed so that some of these guys who actually have a pair might man-up over the off-season and do something about it…otherwise none of them are playing next year. I don’t care if we play 22 freshman next year if that’s what it takes.

Chuck Amato was terrible for this program. Yes, our stadium looks pretty good. But look at us now, a freaking laughing stock. We look good but can’t play worth a lick. TOB deserves our support and our patience. He will get it done. It won’t happen soon. But it will happen. He hates this crap more than all of us put together.

As for yesterday, having a night to sleep on it, I thought the defense played much better as a whole. What irks me is that L’ville pretty much ran it down our throats. I thought Brohm would throw for about 500, but instead they decided to run it at will. We bent but we didn’t break. Another good effort. BC could have trounced us by 50, so could Clemson and so could L’ville had it not been for our D stepping up at key times.

The offense is just hard to watch. When Beck was in he kept throwing it up for grabs. He is not our best option to win – period. I wish we would just stay focused on trying to establish a running game. It seems like every time we get it going, we make a mistake or some wannabe O lineman misses an assignment. Brown had a nice day running (92 yards on 16 carries) but it’s nothing consistent. We were playing freaking L’ville, arguably one of the worst defenses in the country. Whatever. I’m at a loss.

Florida State is a loss. ECU is a loss. Virginia is a loss. Miami is a loss. We will be 1-8 going into the UNC game. Great.

  24. BJD95 09/30/2007 at 9:17 AM #

And when noah says “play”, I think that means “on the two deep” – not starting.

Most of our defenders were recruited and trained to essentially play like kamikaze pilots – and we are trying to teach them gap control. They are not used to it or good at it. But it is essential for the players who will be around in 2009 to start learning now.

As I posted after the UCF loss, Coach O’Brien wasn’t hired to make chicken salad out of chicken shit. He was hired to build a program. The only aspect of that we can currently judge is recruiting, where he has done a great job.

Mack Brown won 2 games in his first 2 years at UNC. Could you tell after his first 5 games that there was no difference between him and the numbnuts he replaced?

  25. JimValvano 09/30/2007 at 10:07 AM #

I think Louisville finally got smart yesterday. I think that we’ll see them run a more ball control offense for the rest of the season and they may even win out on there schedule. Their offense is clearly the talent of the team…so why not keep them on the field for as long as possible? Why not keep your glaring weakness on the sideline for as long as possible? They ran the ball. Controlled the clock. How many times did they punt? Twice? Then their horrible defense wasn’t on the field much so they were more fresh and less exposed. I think we’ll be seeing Louisville doing more of what they did to us for the rest of the season.

Oh, and after seeing us play yesterday…I still think we can beat the tarholes and ezu.

One last thing. I think we should go back to starting Evans. Not because he’s all that much better than Beck or Burke. Not because he makes better decisions. Not because of other reasons you’ve all heard on this site and elsewhere, but because of the reason that we all know he’s not going to ever play in the NFL. Look why put Beck or Burke back there who have good talent and eligibility when our line is the way they are? Steve Spurrier ruined that poor kid, Patrick Ramsey, with the Redskins by throwing him to the wolves with a poor blocking scheme on passing downs. Ramsey developed the nervous feet in the pocket and his talent was wasted. David Carr had the same thing happen to him in Houston. Look, start Evans and salvage the younger, more talented quarterbacks. Don’t throw them out there and cause them to develop bad habits…accept that despite who the quarterback is we’ll be lucky to win 3 or 4 total games this year and do the right thing. Let Evans have what he wants…starts in his senior year, and let the team have what they want…a chance to win more games in the future.
