Southern Pigskin Omits Rivers from All-Decade Team

Southern Pigskin has attempted to put together an All-ACC football team for the last decade. You can see the team here.

I guess I have to respect them for trying, even if they made a significant whiff on the most important position on the field.

I’m guessing that their ‘rationale’ for putting Chris Weinke on the team ahead of Philip Rivers is based in Weinke’s Heisman Trophy and FSU’s National Championship. BFD. The Heisman is largely a product of playing for such a strong, National Championship team…and is representative of ONE SEASON.

I appreciate the inclusion of Terrance Holt at one of the safety positions…but, I am not sure that Holt is even the best safety at NC State in the last decade, let alone the entire conference.

In a related entry, you can click here for a great look at SFN’s 50-Man All-Amato Team.

We’d love to hear your thoughts.

I agree with the K-Rob theory. I’m not just being a homer. He was definitely more dynamic.

I don’t have much argument on the OL…I’m going to let you guys fight that out. I just remember D’Brick being pumped up so much that I was just going to leave him out there.

What are we gonna do at LT?
Feel free to continue your arguments toward WR

  2. noah 08/02/2007 at 3:49 PM #

The OL might not be something we CAN do. I’ve got no beef with the guys they mentioned. I just hate that they listed five or six tackles and ignored some pretty good guards and centers.

  3. MadWolf92 08/02/2007 at 3:57 PM #

I just want to say that as little as I know about QB, RB, WR, and TE in the ACC, I know much, much less about OL.

  4. JimValvano 08/02/2007 at 3:57 PM #

I like the idea of having an actual OL though…a center, guards, and tackles.

  5. noah 08/02/2007 at 4:08 PM #

Elton Brown deserves one of the guard spots. He was a two-time winner of the Jacobs Blocking Trophy, which honors the top OL in the league.

CJ Brooks, Leroy Harris also deserve some consideration at guard.

    okay…so on to defense

DE’s…Peppers, Mario Williams, Andre Wadsworth, Greg Gathers, Calvin Pace, Jamal Reynolds, Gaines Adams???

  7. JimValvano 08/02/2007 at 4:10 PM #

    LT—D’Brickashaw
    LG—Elton Brown
    C—Jeff Saturday
    RG—????
    RT—Jason Whitaker

  8. noah 08/02/2007 at 4:10 PM #

I can live with Peppers and Williams. Those two guys were probably as dominant at their prime as anyone since LT.

  9. JimValvano 08/02/2007 at 4:23 PM #

by the way…I’m wrong on Calvin Johnson…from what I can find he had 9 games of 100 yards in his career.

  10. MadWolf92 08/02/2007 at 4:25 PM #

And I can completely buy the argument that KRob was better than Calvin. I’m just not prepared to make the argument.

  11. JimValvano 08/02/2007 at 4:26 PM #

Calvin Pace had one pretty darn good season but it was just one, Greg Gathers was going to be a good argument until he blew out his knee…I’m just afraid we’re leaning to far towards the Pack…do we have any arguments here from anybody?

    DE—Pepppers
    DE—Mario Williams???

    DT’s???

  12. noah 08/02/2007 at 4:29 PM #

DT…Travis Johnson, from FSU, probably. Probably Corey Simon.

Did Kris Jenkins do ANYTHING at Maryland? I had never heard of him when the Panthers drafted him.

Ryan Sims had one great year that I can recall. Anything else?

Noah, you say that: “Julius Peppers was absolutely positively the single greatest natural 17 or 18-year-old athlete that I’ve ever seen in my life.”

Just curious, did you ever get to see Mike Quick at that age? He would be my pick for that distinction. But I never saw Peppers in high school.

  14. noah 08/02/2007 at 5:10 PM #

No, Quick was before my time. I saw him with the Eagles.

Quick was supposed to be an outstanding basketball player too, wasn’t he?

For those of us in red colored glasses, Cotch was a great receiver with great numbers. As i said earlier, he just did not have the “fear factor” that other receivers did. But I would take him in a heartbeat. After the game look at the stat sheet, and the guy has 8 catches for 120 and a couple TD’s. Slips in under the radar.

Not defending Johnson, but look who was throwing the ball to him. I think it was the ND game, Johnson has 9 or so cathces in the 1st half and Ball never throws to him again. Was it that the D covered him better? No, TV replays showed Johnson open but Ball would not throw to him in 2nd half. Johnson was a freak – never forget the grab he made against us, leaping in the air, reaching behind him, grabbing the ball with one hand, and falling down backwards hanging onto the ball. Amazing.

KRob was more feared too, but with only one real season I dont see him qualifying. Talent? KRob and Johnson win hands down.

KRob had two big years for us. He was rookie of the year in the league in 1999 and was here for Amato’s first year in 2000.

Even though he was suspended for (what seemed like) half the time he was in Raleigh, the dude put up some unreal numbers. AND…like Warrick, was a force returning kicks and punts.

I saw some blurb about KRob on gopack i think and in his short time at State he broke Tory Holt’s 100yd receiving games?

  18. zahadum 08/03/2007 at 8:28 AM #

    Noah,

Yes, Quick was an outstanding bball player. Don’t know if he was recruited by any majors, but he’s still one of the most impressive dunkers I’ve ever seen.

He also, in his senior year in HS:

    a) was state champ in the 400 (or maybe it was still the 440 back then)
    b) high jumped 6′ 10″ with about the lousiest technique I’ve ever seen. If he had wanted to specilize in that, I’ve no doubt he would have been Olympic calibre.
    c) the first time in his life he ever tried pole vaulting, just fooling around at it, he cleared 15 feet. For those who only watch that event during the Olympics that might be hard to relate to, but trust me, that’s dang impressive. For comparision, the actual state champ vault that year was 14′ 8″.

So…I’ve figured it out. Please note that Koren Robinson and Calvin Johnson are not listed. If one isn’t included than neither shall be the other.

    QB-Rivers
    RB-Lamont Jordan
    RB-Thomas Jones
    WR-Peter Warrick
    WR-Torry Holt
WR-Billy McMullen or Kelley Campbell or Jerricho Cotchery
    TE-Heath Miller
    LT-D’Brickashaw Ferguson
    LG-Elton Brown
    C-Jeff Saturday
    RG-Charles Barkley
    RT-Jason Whitaker

    DE-Julius Peppers
    DT-Cory Simon
    DE-Mario Williams

Should we go with a 3-4 defense or a 4-3? It may be easier to find 4 linebackers than to find a defensive tackle that belongs beside Cory Simon.

  20. noah 08/03/2007 at 2:21 PM #

They got the linebackers right. There have been plenty of other linebackers who deserve consideration, but I think those four are good chocies.

  21. JimValvano 08/03/2007 at 3:19 PM #

ah…they’ve got 4 linebackers and 4 on the line

Whose our other tackle gonna be?

  22. noah 08/03/2007 at 4:30 PM #

    John McCargo.

    Why not?

Did Andre Wadsworth play inside at FSU or was he an end?

  23. ncsu_kappa 08/04/2007 at 9:45 AM #

Yeah I’m with K-Rob for the third receiver spot.
    Torry Holt
    Peter Warrick
    K-Rob.

    Jerricho was a starter by the end of Frosh year. 4 yrs 15 100yd games. K-Rob 2years, 14 – 100yd games.
