A nice day in the media for the Wolfpack’s football program.
On the same day that the N&O featured Coach O’Brien’s recruiting success with the state’s top NCHSAA players…
State’s ability to get commitments from the state’s top two prospects is noteworthy.
According to Scout.com, the only school to land the top two players from North Carolina since 2002 was Florida in 2006.
The Gators signed Southern Durham offensive tackle Carl Johnson, who was ranked No. 1, and Shelby Crest linebacker Brandon Spikes, who was No. 2.
O’Brien said last spring that recruiting in-state would be a priority for his program. State has commitments from four of the top 20 prospects on Rivals’ in-state list and six of the top 30.
The Pack is believed to have nine commitments, including seven from North Carolina.
…the Charlotte Observer was highlighting more of the academic compromises that UNC-CH has immediately made for new coach, Butch Davis.
Two members of Butch Davis’ first recruiting class at North Carolina will not play this season because of academics, the school said.
Receiver Dwight Jones of Burlington and linebacker Albert Craddock of High Point failed to meet NCAA academic requirements.
Jones, a 6-foot-5 wideout, was a two-sport standout at Cummings High School. He was named to The AP All-State N.C. high school football team, and also was the AP’s state men’s basketball player of the year.
A team spokesman said Jones will attend Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va., while Craddock is likely to attend junior college.
