Good News Continues – Manning Commits

You want to have some fun?

Take a look at this link and add “NC State” to the guy who is ranked#2…right after the #1 on the list that also has NC State as his college choice!!!

On the heels of this great news for our basketball program, NC State’s Football program got into the groove in a big way as Tom O’Brien added his 4th commitment from the State of North Carolina’s 15 best high school players.

Despite some malevolent behavior by some members of the UNC-CH football staff and local Scotland County Tarheel boosters, one of the nation’s top linebackers chose to run with the Pack today when Terrell Manning made his commitment to NC State public at a 1pm press conference in Scotland County. Manning will join Dwayne Maddox – another of the state’s top LB prospects – in helping bolster a Wolfpack linebacking corp that was already thin before last week’s announcement that the highly-talented Avery Vogt was leaving the program.

Pack Pride says, “Manning is rated the No. 2 player in the state of North Carolina by Scout.com. The network has also tabbed Manning a four-star prospect, the nation’s No. 6 weakside linebacker prospect, and the No. 85 player overall in the class of 2008. ”

Manning’s commitment will most certainly vault NC State into a position on most recruiting services list of CURRENT Top 20 recruiting classes, joining a list of impressive – and growing – 4-star and 5-star commitments like Mike Glennon and Brandon Barnes.

Not to get lost in the shuffle, NC State announced our SEVENTH consecutive sellout of football season tickets with a record number of 38,200 tickets today.

“The dedication of the Wolfpack nation has been obvious to me since my first day on the job,” said first-year NCSU coach Tom O’Brien. “I’m looking forward to standing on the home sideline in a packed Carter-Finley Stadium this season.”

I guess the next barometer of the bright future for Tom O’Brien in Raleigh will be offensive line recruiting! As I look at this list I see two offensive linemen in the Top 15 who both still list NC State amongst their potential college choices!!

This great news, though largely expected. I am thrilled at the focus of the coaching staff on the area I consider to be of greatest need. If we can beat Clemson out for Abrams-Ward, we will have a premier group of LB’s in a couple of years. Way to go TOB and staff. Now pull some of those OL prospects!!!

    Yay. : )

What exactly did Carolina do in the recruitment of Manning?

  3. Pack92 08/03/2007 at 4:26 PM #

redterror said it all. Keep those needed positions coming in Tom!

I can’t wait to talk some junk to the unx guys who thought a National Champiosnship was coming with Butch Davis. I think I’ll wear my Oregon State “Back to BacK” shirt when I do it. Jump in here holes, you surely can’t let that pass!

Here is Miller Safrit’s interview with him (Video). he also mentions how he’s trying to get Dewayne Allen to come along with him.

I’d also really like to know what kind of negative recruiting went on with UNC staff, boosters, etc. A poster on packpride mentioned a local scotland county unc booster lying to Manning about state’s staff, saying TOB was gonna retire to his beach house in a couple of years and that’s the only reason he took the job. to get closer to the beach. i don’t know. seems like maybe there is more to it, since a lot of people online have mentioned unc’s neg. recruitment of manning. Anyone know more?

  7. RochesterRedWolf 08/03/2007 at 7:17 PM #

i saw an article last year that said that when Greg Little went to UNC over Notre Dame that Charlie Weis text’d Little and basically challenged his manhood or something childish like that.

I’d also like to know what kind of negative recruiting went on because I know they play dirty, one of my best friends growing up, his dad was a major Rams Club contributor and he was always recruiting for them whenever he saw local talent. And let’s just say it wasn’t how beautiful it was to play in Chapel Hole.

  8. noah 08/03/2007 at 7:19 PM #

If that story is true, technically, it’s not out of line with what TOB has said…provided that “couple of years” = ~ a decade.

I’d tell any recruit that was thinking about Butch Davis and UNC….if you want to go to UNC, make sure it’s not BECAUSE of Butch Davis. If you want to finish your career under Davis, you need to commit to Arkansas.

Another huge pickup for TOB and the Pack. Thanks for linking the video.

O’Brien has to be raising eyebrows w/ this class so far.

I hate to add fuel to a fire(as i know how some of you feel about ECU), but look what these idiot Cal and Tenn fans have to say about College GameDay going to VaTech for the game vs ECU-

    http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2918886

even if you dislike ECU, how could anyone have a problem with ESPN paying tribute to VaTech?!

also it seems like Pac10 fans like to cry a lot about the SEC… yet know nothing about it.

oh yeah… btw- you just have to read the responses to the article.

When was the last time NC State football and basketball got this much good press. It’s kind of scary because we will never hear the end of this if we don’t materialize into what is expected.

  13. PortAuthority 08/04/2007 at 10:33 AM #

If we can lock down Abrams-Ward, then we will have the 4 best linebackers in NC and the top 3 overall players in NC. Go get um TOB!

Just checked out the list at the link – and you have to concede that half of the players listed are uncommitted, and one of State’s huge recruits is not credited yet so the same situation may exist with others as well.
But out of the top 40 recruits in North Carolina, UNC doesn’t have a single commitment? We’ve already got seven announced. Even Duke has one. The Butch Davis era is off to a great start as far as I’m concerned.

Barnes & Manning represent the consensus top 2 players in North Carolina (Scout & Rivals). There is considered to be a gap between these 2 and whoever you want to say is number 3. I don’t recall NC State ever signing the top 2 football players in the state. Off the top of my head, I can’t recall any team doing it but it may done in the past but with so many of the very top players having gone out of state in the past – I’m really not sure.

noah, that is funny … and has a ring of truth to it.

Just looked over the roster at GoPack.com, and I must admit that I am dismayed at the lack of depth and experience across both lines, the linebackers, and the kicking game.

We basically have 5 offensive lineman who have played a meaningful snap, and this includes McCuller (whose status is TBD).

This new coaching staff is really going to have to coach this team up, because I am concerned that we simply have little to no talent behind our starters at C, G, OT, DE, DT, and all three linebacking spots.

A single key injury could make a decent season turned horrendous.

Its a shame that we have such great talent at the skill positions (QB notwishstanding) and the secondary, but that Amato’s inability to recruit the OL and to develop a 2nd kicker behind Deraney could crush us for at least 2 seasons.

Lets face it, last year’s class and the year prior had a few bright spots, but overall left much to be desired.

Do u guys remember Brent Schaeffer? He was a JUCO 5 star and it came down to between NCState and Ole Miss and he chose Ole Miss, i think that was in 06.

He is considered one of the biggest busts, checkout this story from rivals.com

    1. Ole Miss QB Brent Schaeffer
Ole Miss coach Ed Orgeron made a huge gamble last year by declaring Schaeffer his starting quarterback before the junior college transfer had arrived on campus. The move backfired. Schaefffer finished 100th in the nation in passing efficiency and completed less than half his passes as the Rebels sputtered to a 4-8 finish. Oregon has since admitted he shouldn’t have given the job to Schaeffer so soon. Schaeffer would love to make amends this season, but he first must beat out junior Seth Adams – who ended spring practice atop the depth chart.

    From article in today’s N&O:

“State’s ability to get commitments from the state’s top two prospects is noteworthy.

According to Scout.com, the only school to land the top two players from North Carolina since 2002 was Florida in 2006.

The Gators signed Southern Durham offensive tackle Carl Johnson, who was ranked No. 1, and Shelby Crest linebacker Brandon Spikes, who was No. 2.”

  22. choppack1 08/05/2007 at 10:27 AM #

I was really concerned about Schaeffer – he was deemed a huge target for us – but I don’t think he’ll be able to deliver on that promise.

Getting top 2 prospects in the NC is awesome!
Just as impressive as their rankings is the perceived character of Barnes and Manning. I think their respective chances for panning out are higher than a lot of the others guys from that top 2 list. If you look at the list their are about 1/3 to 1/2 who never made an impact for various reasons.
