Fox Sports Article – Degand, Costner Tidbits

Here is the full article (Hat Tip to Pack Pride message boards). There’s a brief tidbit on Farnold Degand’s progress (still my bet to be the starter), but the most interesting part is Lowe’s acknowledgement that Costner could get minutes at the 3:

Lowe also mentioned that Costner could see some time at small forward this season with the addition of Hickson and Smith. “It’s possible,” he said. Lowe said that his goal for Costner is to improve his quickness and ballhandling prior to this season.

I’m thrilled to hear that. I don’t like the idea of Hickson, Costner, and McCauley (likely our 3 best players) only having 80 minutes to divide among themselves. This would also give us tremendous matchup flexibility, and make us nearly impossible to defend at times. I expect Degand to play point when Costner is at the 3 in our “big” lineup, due to his speed and overall defensive ability.

Good job there with that “Mr Brokenrecord” stuff.

Sorry I said anything, but I can’t but keep noticing how you think anyone who signs a professional contract immediately becomes the smartest person on the planet. In the case of Cedric Simmons, I was astonished and I think he did very well. That was a case where anyone would say take the money and run. I still say though that he could have improved his game and his personal belief in his own abilitites with a little more time on the collegiate level.

But thanks anyway, Mr Anyone Who Signs Is Einstein, over and over and over again.

“but I can’t but keep noticing how you think anyone who signs a professional contract immediately becomes the smartest person on the planet.”

There’s no need to throw a temper-tantrum. I’ve never said or implied any such thing. You must be confusing me with someone else.

It has been my experience in interviewing hundreds of amateur athletes that the #1 goal for the vast majority of them is to play their sport professionally. Their high school and college careers are just stepping stones.

Secondly, Cedric Simmons full-time job now is “professional basketball player.” Considering that the NBA game is so very different from the college game, considering that he no longer has to worry about the social and academic limitations of college life, considering that the NCAA is no longer limiting the amount of time he can spend practicing with his team, it’s difficult for me to see his current situation isn’t far more conducive to improving his game than his college situation was. BTW, before anyone brings it up, that’s not an indictment on Sendek, that goes for any player.

noah, I’ll drop it but I do not see how you or anyone can say that for ANY kid to jump from a league that he’s hardly even been a factor in, right on up to the next, is ALWAYS a good move. It’s just not true. That goes from grade school straight on up to the pro’s, with few exceptions. That is unless it’s always ALL about the quickest possible route to the money, as seems to be track record in your thinking.

I say there are many other factors involved that can make the adjustment to the professional ranks easier and even much more profitable in the long run.

I haven’t seen it posted yet, but here’s an article about the death of Eddie Griffin.

Here’s a prime example of someone that was not ready for the NBA. In it, Washburn (among others) is mentioned.

TNCSU – were Washburn or Griffin ever going to be ready for the NBA?

^ Yeah, somehow I imagine the guy polishing his knob while driving (and later hit by a train) was never going to be on the path to responsible, upstanding citizenship.

    FWIW, I’ve never said that.

What I’ve said was that if a player can get drafted and get a guaranteed deal, it’s his decision and I’m in no position to stop him.

^^TNCSU – were Washburn or Griffin ever going to be ready for the NBA?

Good question — the easy answer would be to say, NO, but I hold some optimism. I think that if some of these kids got some guidance and sometimes, a swift kick in the %$# when they were a little younger, they may “learn” to be responsible.
