Depth Chart Released

Link to pdf. Daniel Evans is listed as the #1 QB, Beck is his backup. Based on what we have read and heard, none of the QBs looked that good in the preseason, and it remains a position to be concerned about. All 3 RBs (including Eugene) are listed as “co-starters.” Interesting.

Demario Pressley is also not listed on the 2-deep. Hopefully, we’ll hear some details during O’Brien’s press conference.

Pressley has a bad wing. John Dunlap, contrary to what I had been told, doesn’t appear to be injured.

Also…interesting that Jeff Ruiz, the JUCO punter we brought in, didn’t get the job done. I’d be perfectly willing to never bring in another JUCO player ever again. I can think of about four that have ever worked out for us…and about 40 that never got off the bench.

Erik Kramer, one of the DEs that Amato and one of the DTs, and maybe one of the DEs that O’Cain brought in at the last minute….other than those guys, they’ve been a waste of time.

Jerrail McCuller….nowhere to be seen, so apparently he’s being suspended.

really cool article by Kirk Herbstreit, with his Herbie Awards. I guess its cool because he’s got some love for NCSU…few of the players made the list too.

    Regarding Ruiz & JUCO’s:

We were so bad in the spring that we didn’t even punt in the scrimmage opened to the public and O’Brien named Ruiz the starter on the “Organizational Chart” before he even showed up on campus.

What about Garrett Kline? We have 2 true freshman backing up the starting OT’s.

At least Antoine Holmes is backing up Martrel Brown at DE.

The QB right before Kramer was also from junior college – Tim Esposito. He came from a CA juco just like Kramer. Of course he went 3-8 both his seasons.

Olin Hannum made some solid contributions.

the ex-USC running back Moody disses the tarholes, chooses Florida. I think that will sting nicely since he had it down to UNC and FL. He admitted that BDavis was the only reason he looked at UNC, i bet when he saw the OL though he thought again. Maybe he didn’t like the idea of wearing the “yellow practice jersey”.

I’m ready for Butch Davis to go ahead and take the Arkansas job.

The JUCO DT I was trying to think of was Terrance Martin.

Garrett Kline was supposed to be a 6-7 tackle. I think he’s more like 6-2. Argh.

i think it says alot that a few true freshman are on the depth chart. You have to wonder if Amato was really capable of getting “everything” out of kids. The way O’Brien made every position open and people had to fight for it I think (not only was it necessary) but I imagine that’s how it always is with him, he expects results and the ones who deliver get to play. Just showing up, no matter how good you are, doesn’t guarantee anything. I bet he would have gotten more out of Mario Williams,Tank Tyler, McCargo, Lawson had he been here even though those guys were all-world players. I am excited as hell about this football season.

As a general rule, it’s not a good thing for true freshmen to have much of an impact on your depth chart.

But, I agree, Amato had clearly lost the team last year. Darrell Blackman said as much earlier this year in the Wilmington paper.

Without knowing much about the QB’s it makes sense to start Evans as we really need someone who is smart and can run the offense, avoid mistakes and throw an occasional 3rd down pass. This seems to be a good fit for DE.

Anyone who missed seeing State’s offense from the second-half of the 2005 season, will have a chance to see it again. (Unfortunately, the defense will not be as good as 2005.) The open question is… How many games will look like FSU and how many will look like BC?

  13. Mr O 08/27/2007 at 4:21 PM #

Vawolf82: Evans is a much better passer than Stone as he is at least accurate, so I doubt will be as conservative as those last six games in 2005. I think Evans can be a good “Wake Forest” type of QB. Meaning, he won’t ever carry a team to a good season, but I think he can be the QB of a good ACC team. Evans had so many factors working against him last year

    1- terrible starting field position
2- playing from behind in all 9 starts
    3- untimely offensive penalties
4- a defense that didn’t create short fields with TOs
    5- inconsistent running game

I was unfortunate enough to see each of our 12 games last year in person. IMO, Evans showed enough accuracy that I think he can actually throw it well enough to move us consistently on offense assuming we improve on the areas I mentioned above.

O, my recollection in quite a few games in the (later) mid season (UVa, UMd, and Clem, specificially), we hung around quite some time just waiting for somebody, somewhere to do something, in games where neither side was doing anything offensively. I seemed to recall the Clemson game particularly, that we had a significant field position advantage the early part of the game (multiple series) and did absolutely nothing with it. I guess I’m taking issue with the portrait of poor Daniel being drastically handicapped by prediciments beyond his control that would handicap most anyone. I don’t recall it that way. Maybe I’m mistaken?

Interesting facts from the depth chart:

    -DeMario Pressley’s absence
-The battle at the cornerback position (demotion of Jimmie Sutton III)
    -Where is Audi Augustin?
    -The three starters at HB
    -No Jeff Ruiz at P
-Where is the highly acclaimed Jay Smith?
    -Where is Jerail McCuller?
-The battle at the Safety positions…who was the kid that ran back the touchdown in the Spring Game???
-Markus Kuhn’s emergence on the two deep chart

I suppose the changes at cornerback are due to the change in philosophy in switching from a man-to-man scheme to a zone. DeMario isn’t listed because of his injuries…at least that is what I’m going to assume. Jay Smith will earn his playing time, but he hasn’t been on campus long enough to do so just yet. McCuller’s off the field troubles are haunting him, but I wonder if he’s having on the field troubles as well. I would have figured that Kuhn would take a while to develop but he is on the depth chart which to me is very impressive. This kid must be an absolute freak of nature! I can’t wait to see him play. Remember this dude played middle linebacker and he’s 280 pounds.

Please, can someone inform me on when the deadline for redshirting a player is (After first home game)? I cannot believe that letting Roberts, Vermiglio, and Kuhn suit up bodes well for the future. Kuhn is new to the game and this country and Roberts is only 17 years old, or something!

Maybe (fingers crossed) this is just a way to congratulate them in writing before they get red shirted. I glad to see that atleat Bryan didn’t show up on the TE charts, that would have left me feeling dizzy. He’ll hopefully RS and start preparing to be an all ACC tackle opposite Andrew Wallace someday.

I’m not sure that there is much of a date…I thought it had to do with whether you played in a game or not.

  18. Mr O 08/27/2007 at 5:04 PM #

ncsslim: UVa game is a good example of what I am talking about.

    1. average starting field position of 24.5 yard line on 12 drives
    2. Va scored 1st
    3. 9 penalties for 53 yards(2 off holding, 5 false starts)
    4. 0 TOs forced by defense
    5. Brown/Baker averaged 3.27 YPC

    Evans’ stats for the day-
21-35, 220 yards, 1 int on last play of the game

  19. packbackr04 08/27/2007 at 5:28 PM #

what about Markus Kuhn? the kid from germany?

  20. ADS95 08/27/2007 at 5:35 PM #

    vtpackfan,

Simply suiting up to play a game does not affect redshirt status at all. Only if the player actually participates.

If a player goes in for a single play, they cannot redshirt unless they become injured.

If they are injured before the team has played, I think, 3 games, then they can take a medical redshirt. I know that Sterling Hicks redshirted after he was injured at Ohio State in 2003, which was our third game.

  21. BJD95 08/27/2007 at 5:42 PM #

For the season, Evans had a YPA of 6.0, and a TD/int ratio of 6:11. Both of those numbers are horrid.

Worse, in the 7 straight losses to end the season, Evans threw 1 TD pass and 9 interceptions.

Even accounting for the situation, Evans was bad last season. Part of why I think he’s best suited to be a backup is that his numbers took a nosedive after defenses got more tape on him (remember, the defenses that he did the most against – BC and FSU – were pretty good).

  22. Mr O 08/27/2007 at 6:10 PM #

BJD95: The TD to int ratio is very misleading without looking at the situations Evans was put in last year when those picks were thrown. Here are a few examples of what I am talking about:

3 ints in hail mary situations – Wake, UVa, UNC all resulted in 0 points and were essentially the final plays of the game

1 int in last seven minutes versus UNC needing a TD to tie game

1 int with 50 seconds left in 1st half resulting in no Clemson points(game tied, but pick didn’t hurt us)

1 int with 3:00 left in 4th quarter inside our own 10 yard line down 17-14 against Clemson

1 int in Md in 1st half down 13-0

1 int against Md with 6 minutes to go down 23-13

  23. Mr O 08/27/2007 at 6:13 PM #

Again, we can’t put Evans in positions where he has to come up with miracles every week. Most of his picks were in situations where he was being forced to make a play because of being down at the end of the game or down at least two scores already.

I didn’t even look at his other three picks. One was against BC in a game we won. Not sure about the other two.

  24. Mr O 08/27/2007 at 6:19 PM #

Sorry, the 1st int. vs Maryland was actually at the beginning of the 3rd quarter, not the 1st half.

  25. wolfman 08/27/2007 at 7:05 PM #

Evans should be fine, he has the benefits of

    1) a more disciplined team, and fewer penalties and turnovers
    2) better play calling, including what should be a dedicated (and effective) running game
    3) hopefully not having to dig out of holes due to the lack of 1) and 2)
    4) good game experience

I am with Mr. O, in that it always seemed like Evans was having to play catch up as the result of lots of penalties, silly turnovers, 3rd and long situations, etc. That, coupled with his inexperience, led to having a few really breathtaking moments (BC and FSU games) and then some equally disheartening losses. If he can manage games, rather than try to pull out the comeback every week, I believe we can have a good season.
