Basketball Schedule Released (With OOC Analysis)

The 2007-2008 basketball schedule is hot off the presses. Our first glance tells us that, there are not a lot of Sunday night FSN games this year.

10/27 – Red/White Scrimmage

11/1 – Barton College (Exh.) 7:00 p.m.

SFN Analysis: We’ll probably have to link to the YouTube of the wild D-III finish again. Let’s hope our broadcast crew doesn’t embarrass themselves with talk of beating a “defending champion” like they did last football season.

11/6 – UNC Pembroke (Exh.) 7:00 p.m.

SFN Analysis: This just reminds us of the ubiquitous billboards on I-95 when we head south. Almost as much as South of the Border.

11/15 – William & Mary (7:00 p.m.)

SFN Analysis: An appropriate caliber opponent for a season opener (Sagarin 201). Sadly, there are 7 OOC foes that fared worse last season (shakes head incredulously). If we were the AA stop on the Lou Holtz career train, William & Mary was where he played A-ball.

11/18 – New Orleans (6:30 p.m., FSNS)

SFN Analysis: IIRC, this game is part of a “2 and 1” series with the Privateers, as part of our deal to hire away former head coach Monte Towe. Hey, at least it’s on TV, unlike the fabulous December road date that Lee so wisely lined up for us (more later).

Old Spice Classic – Orlando, Fla.

11/22 – Rider (2:00 p.m., ESPN2)

SFN Analysis: Rider is in the same conference as last year’s 2nd-round NIT opponent, Marist (we think). Avoiding the first round upset and staying on the ESPN2 path should be easy.

11/23 – Penn State/South Carolina (TBA, ESPN2 or ESPNU)

SFN Analysis: Penn State sucks, so let’s hope for NIT legend Dave Odom to square off with the Pack here. It would be nice to get at least a moderate test before likely facing our first legitimately talented foe.

11/25 – TBA – maybe Kansas State or Villanova? (TBA, ESPN2 or ESPNU)

SFN Analysis: Not much stands between one set of Wildcats (hat tip to RickJ from the comments) and the finals, so we will go ahead and anticipate these matchups. K State doesn’t have Huggy Bear anymore, but still has his recruits (for this year anyway). Incoming freshman Michael Beasley was the only player that impressed me as much as J.J. Hickson during the McDonald’s All-American game. K State would be a very interesting game that wouldn’t get much national attention. Villanova followed up their exciting 2005-06 season with a more pedestrian 2006-07, but they would also make a quality opponent here.

Big Ten/ACC Challenge

11/28 – at Michigan State (7:00 p.m., ESPN)

SFN Analysis: Here’s your first signature moment of the 2007-08 season, and we can thank the scheduling powers-that-be for a wonderful opportunity. For the first time in Challenge history, the Pack gets one of the 2 coveted non-Duke/Carolina “Big Boy ESPN” slots. Coming off 3 neutral court games (at least 1 or 2 of which should be at least mildly challenging), the Pack should be primed for a true road test. It’s all upside here, as a loss would be respectable, and a win would be a significant, nationally-recognized upset. The Spartan fans are also a classy bunch, based on my memories of a Sendek-era NCAAT matchup.

12/8 – at East Carolina (7:00 p.m.)

SFN Analysis: Memo to Lee Fowler – when a TV-friendly ACC team (expected to be in the Top 4 of the league) plays a non-conference road game that isn’t televised – you really fucked up. There’s no point in playing this game, other than exposing yourself to a chance (albeit very small) of abject humiliation. Want to think outside the box? Schedule a “2 for 1” against a Missouri Valley Conference team – not this Mickey Mouse shit.

12/15 – South Carolina State (2:30 p.m.)

SFN Analysis: We only play 2 games between 11/28 at Michigan State and 12/21 against Davidson (and this is one of them). I understand the need for an exam lull, but this is pretty extreme.

12/21 – Davidson (7:00 p.m., FSNS)

SFN Analysis: This was, IIRC, a late addition to the schedule. Thank God it was added, because it’s probably the best home game on the OOC schedule. Whoever guards Dell Curry’s kid needs to be awake and focused. Courtney and Gavin, this likely means you. Get your heads on straight now.

12/23 – Cincinnati (7:30 p.m., FSN)

SFN Analysis: Hopefully, some redemption for perhaps the ugliest loss of the 2006-07 season. As I watched the 2nd half over lunch with one of my kids at a Cary sports bar, I wondered if we really might go 1-15 or 2-14 in ACC play. Fortunately, we got better. Much better.

12/27 – at Seton Hall (TBA)

SFN Analysis: Former NC State commit Larry Davis will be in uniform for the Pirates. Wonder if he has any regrets? This will be a tough test, after 2 decent, bunched-together home games and only a very short break to see family for Christmas. A letdown game is very possible, perhaps even likely.

12/29 – Western Carolina (2:30 p.m.)

SFN Analysis: Curiously, we start a run of 3 extreme cupcake games, bridging the more balanced/interesting portion of our OOC schedule and conference play – going more than 2 weeks without an even mildly challenging game. I don’t see the logic in it at all – hopefully, our hands were tied and we didn’t choose such a ridiculous setup. Former Sendek assistant Larry Hunter returns to town, so there’s your point of interest.

1/5 – Presbyterian (2:30 p.m.)

SFN Analysis: The Pack rings in the new year with a first year D-I opponent. Even the worst 96-hour hangover couldn’t trip us up here – but I worry about creeping bad habits and loss of focus through this high-carb stretch.

1/9 – North Carolina Central (7:00 p.m.)

SFN Analysis: A second consecutive first-year D-I foe? That’s just freaking ridiculous. Before UNC, no less – about as extreme of a change in temperature as you can get. Think Antarctica vs. the Kalahari Desert.

1/12 – at North Carolina (12:00 p.m., ESPN)

1/15 – at Clemson (7:00 p.m., RSN)

1/19 – Miami (8:00 p.m., RLF Split)

1/23 – Georgia Tech (7:00 p.m., ESPN2)

1/26 – at Florida State (1:30 p.m., RLF)

1/31 – at Duke (9:00 p.m., RLF)

2/3 – Wake Forest (12:00 p.m., RLF)

2/5 – Virginia Tech (7:00 p.m., ESPNU)

2/9 – at Maryland (8:00 p.m., RLF)

2/14 – at Boston College (7:00 p.m., ESPN or ESPN2)

2/16 – Clemson (3:00 p.m., RLF Split)

2/20 – North Carolina (7:00 p.m., ESPN)

2/24 – at Virginia (5:30 p.m., FSN)

2/27 – Florida State (7:00 p.m., ESPNU)

3/1 – Duke (12:00 p.m., CBS)

3/8 – at Wake Forest (12:00 p.m., RLF Split)

RSN – Regional Sports Network
FSN – Fox Sports Network
RLF – Raycom/Lincoln Financial Sports
FSNS – Fox Sports Net South

BJD95’s Initial Analysis:

We caught a good break with the ACC/Big Ten challenge game – otherwise, it’s a pretty lackluster schedule. I also don’t like the way it lays out – particularly the 15 days between the last legitimate opponent (12/27, at Seton Hall) and the ACC opener (1/12, at UNC). Naturally, I also don’t like opening ACC play with our most difficult matchup of the season. That just plain sucks. Once ACC play begins, no more OOC games. Don’t like that, either.

NC State’s final Sagarin rating last year was 64. Everyone certainly expects that the 2007-08 team will be stronger – so why does our best case scenario schedule (assuming we get South Carolina and Kansas State or ‘Nova in the last 2 rounds of the Old Spice Classic) involve playing only 3 OOC teams that rated higher, and 11 rated lower? If we get opponents other than the Gamecocks and Wildcats, that ratio could slip as low as an abhorrent 1:13. A maximum of 6 of our 14 opponents were rated between 1-200 last season, and we play #299 East Carolina on the fucking road. Great idea, Lee! Generously giving first year D-1 foes NC Central and Presbyterian default ratings of 300, the Sagarin average of Wolfpack OOC foes, assuming the best possible Old Spice opponents, is approximately 183.

One nice positive – at least three appearances on “big boy” ESPN, and at least 6 on ESPN/ESPN2 combined. The Pack only has one network game scheduled (home against Duke, on CBS), which is disappointing. Still, looks like we might be able to watch in HD 7 times this season.

WHY WHY WHY Play the Damn Pirates of Pittzance??!! Obviously this is a sop, bone, whatever, to Terry Holland. BUT WHY??!! From the Wolfpack’s standpoint, what good could possibly come from it?? – ZERO!!! No….LESS THAN ZERO!!

  2. TomCat 08/24/2007 at 2:07 AM #

Almost lost to the Pirates in RBC last season (and they were horrible) before we got our act together. ECU canned head coach Ricky Stokes this week. Now actually have a decent coach in Mac McCarthy who made several runs in the NCAA Tourney as Head Coach of UT-Chattanooga & Virginia Commonwealth. Pirates- for the first time in 3 years have a complete frontcourt to compliment decent guard play. Should be a loud thriller in their barn (Minges Coliseum). They’ve beaten top 10 teams Memphis and Marquette at their place before- in recent history. They also host Wake Forest there this year, I believe. If nothing else, Terry Holland has done a masterful job throwing his personal clout around in scheduling football and basketball series for ECU. I see this contest as a potential ambush game similar to Santa Clara- for UNC-Ch a couple years back. Small gym, rowdy, motivated and deafening crowd. ECU has absolutely no history in basketball. Tney haven’t had a winning season in a decade, but a dangerous team when properly motived for a particular game…. and you can believe they will be absolutely motivated- for the Wolfpack.

Clemson and Virginia Tech are going to the Bahamas and Canada to play 2 or 3 exhibition games over the Labor Day weekend. I think they get 8 to 10 on campus practices before the games and the NCAA allows you to do this every 4 years. Didn’t we take a team to Italy a number of years ago?

From my perspective, it would have been a great year to do this kind of trip since we will be assimilating six new players.

Let’s take care of business, win the ACC, and our strength of schedule will be a moot point.

Also, I’ve found a new fun game to play in the office: get a Carolina fan talking about the season, and then mention that Costner has been getting work in at the 3 spot. Then add a reference to McCauley. The reaction is priceless.

“There’s no point in playing this game (ECU), other than exposing yourself to a chance (albeit very small) of abject humiliation.”

This point cannot be emphasized enough. It has nothing to do with “being afraid” to play ECU. These nimrods are 0 – 54 all time against the ACC – How is that even possible? We are playing them in Greenville on December 8th. This is before Marques Johnson, possibly our best choice at lead guard, becomes eligible. If we were to lose this game, the headlines will be excruciating. Every Wake, Duke & UNC fan you know will remind you of the loss in every conversation for the remainder of the year. There is just no rational reason in the world to put a coach in his second year in this position.

Can anyone tell me why the cost of tickets with lifetime rights is going up and the quality of games is heading South? I mean the football schedule has taken some jarring criticism (and rightfully so), but this is pathetic. I realize there are some decent games here….KSU, MSU, SC, even Seton Hall is a Big East opponent….but none of those are at home!!!! So I get to see Davidson & Cincinnati? Then we get the bottom four teams from the ACC at home…Clemson, Miami, FSU, and Wake! Well the good news is at least Greenville is a short drive for me? WTF?

  7. newt 08/24/2007 at 9:58 AM #

Only reason I can think to play ECU is the political clout of Terry Holland.

  8. primacyone 08/24/2007 at 10:09 AM #

^There are a lot better political reasons than that.

It’s has been very difficult for anybody west of Raleigh to be Governer in this state, and there are A LOT of people of in Raleigh (and from Raleigh) who want to keep it that way. Historically, who ever gets the eastern vote wins. Not to mention the highway funds.

However, I think the primary reason everyone is succombing to the political pressure and playing in Greenville is becuase 2007 is ECU’s Centennial and this is their celebration, etc.

“That is one of the worst schedules from a seaon ticket buying alum that I have ever seen. I can’t believe LEE AND crew are asking me to pay $520 per seaon ticket with this type of cupcake home schedule. ”

Amen brother…I’m tired of paying to watch crappy teams…if I didn’t already have so much invested in the LTR seats, I’d dump them.

Andrew Wallace committs!, plus extended interview with Brandon Barnes and Sammy Batten (of the Fayetteville Observer) on wral.com, plus TOB’s press conference from yesterday after practice.

  11. primacyone 08/24/2007 at 10:30 AM #

^Awesome. He’s the #2 OL prospect in the state and ranked number 16 overall in the state. TOB is blowing up that top 30 in NC list. That’s 7 of 30 and it’s still way early. WOW.

  12. tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc 08/24/2007 at 10:42 AM #

“Are we seriously playing Sfagarin 254 Western carolina”

Probably because every school plays in-state ooc games and the fact that Larry Hunter was a great coach for NC State. Hunter was the only reason Herb Sendek, who led NC State to 5 consecutive NCAA appearances, survived as long as he did. WCU had a down year last year but I wouldn’t expect them to be as awful as they where last year for long. In Hunter’s first season he doubled the win total from the year before he came (13-17). They took a step backwards last year but I would suspect the NCAA’s 14th winningest active coach will have that program doing well this year.

  13. brickman 08/24/2007 at 10:50 AM #

what a great class coming in so far and to get him from assholes is even better! as far as bball teams we play at home what a joke ! who ever made up this joke of a schedule must not want to put people in the seats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. primacyone 08/24/2007 at 11:10 AM #

Just for the sake of asking the question. Will the win/lose potential of this OCC help us with the NCAA bid?

It sure would be nice to play that first weekend of the NCCA Tournament in the RBC Center. If this OCC schedule helps us do that, then I’m all for it.

Same goes if this OCC schedule helps us develop a PG early in the season without a lot of risk to the W column. I’d be all for that as well.

  15. LRM 08/24/2007 at 11:23 AM #

^^We couldn’t play in the RBC even if we got the #1 seed in the NCAA tourney.

I think it’s good we play other NC schools like Western and App, but we need to start building a foundation where we expect excellence against a respectable schedule. For instance, adding one GW, one Alabama, and one Arizona. The biggest problem is that scheduling down the road, there’s really no sure-fire way to know who will be a tough game. We played a Top 10 Alabama last season and they obviously were vastly overrated in retrospect in March. At the time, it was still a good game.

  16. noah 08/24/2007 at 11:47 AM #

Andrew Wallace is a huge get. I’m sure the guy from Georgia is a nice player, but he’s probably a guard. We are tackle-depleted.

  17. RochesterRedWolf 08/24/2007 at 11:57 AM #

i am excited we got the guy from Georgia as well, but I really like that TOB is going after NC players. The interview with Sammy Batten talks about how Butch focuses so much on recruiting nationally. What I like as one person mentioned is that we got Wallace after he was an initial lean to UNC. He grew up a State fan and I guess he was blown away on a recent unofficial visit. Also note that Nick Becton has us scheduled as his first official visit. When i met coach Horton on a flight out of raleigh, he was really excited about Becton.

I’m not really sure where to put this so everyone can see it. I just found some of these comments about the ACC Football Season from ESPN interesting. Please note their list of great running backs.

“Let’s take care of business, win the ACC, and our strength of schedule will be a moot point.”
Can’t be said enough. Who cares that we played Presby if we win the ACC?

Also, nobody should overlook Davidson. They are a preseason top-25 team that could steal a win from one of the ACC teams that they play this year. This will be a good game to see in the RBC.

And personally I don’t care about playing @ECU. A win @ECU is better for our SOS than a win at home over ECU. Sure, I’d rather play @ some good mid-major, but this isn’t nearly as bad as people are making it out to be.

Read that JV. Must have been a slow research day for that guy.

  21. beowolf 08/24/2007 at 1:48 PM #

Primewolf — My brother-in-law will be in town “around Christmas” and I’d like to take him to a game, so keep me in mind.

  22. LRM 08/24/2007 at 3:10 PM #

“Read that JV. Must have been a slow research day for that guy.”

I was shocked when I first read it as well. But as I started to think more about it, all of the guys he named are proven — Davis, Spiller, Choice and Ore were all Top 5 in total yards, yards per carry, and TDs; James and Smith were Top 10 in each category. Brown and Baker only combined for a total of 1,346 yds and 10 TDs.

The fact is, we just didn’t have much offense last season. And in all reality, there’s no real solid reason to think these guys’ numbers will be any better this season without solid blocking up front. Perhaps a new offensive scheme will make the difference.

  23. bTHEredterror 08/24/2007 at 3:30 PM #

As disappointed as I am with the OOC schedule, particularly at home, I’m not reading a lot into it. While I’m certain the three game cupcake run before UNC will hurt us, they are playing a similar stretch, so it will likely cancel out.

The FB recruiting news is great, hopefully Wallace is the first of many OL to commit. I’m a broken record at this point, but I love the focus in recruiting. Our biggest needs are being addressed, and we are still getting some speed at the skill slots.

There’s an article in PackPride that suggests TOB RS as much as possible, for the long term stability of the program. While I agree with that in principle, I don’t believe next year’s OL or LBs will have enough depth to do so. The article makes the point I’ve seen many credible posters make here, that if PR were redshirted and the first season of Amato’s tenure was essentially scrapped, we would be in better shape now. While that would have certainly given us a good shot at making noise two years ago, I’m not at all certain PR would have signed if he wasn’t going to be given a shot to play right away. It also would mean Amato would likley still be our coach, so I’m inclined to say we are better off this way.

Can’t wait to join ya’ll in C-F Saturday.

  24. noah 08/24/2007 at 3:39 PM #

I imagine the fortunes of our football season will become much clearer on Monday (I think) when the detailed injury report will be posted.
