Tuesday Open Entry

Swamped at work right now. Wanted to open an entry for folks to focus on RELEVANT State issues that may be out there and share some links for other readers. Of course, Skip Prosser is still on everyone’s mind.

For some fun, we’ll share this 9 minute clip from YouTube reviewing the Wolfpack’s 1998 Peach Bowl win over Iowa. The Wolfpack knocked off the Big Ten’s Hawkeyes twice during Dick Sheridan’s tenure.

I knew something was messed up…number one because I’m relatively young and that ballgame was a very distant memory for me. Plus I was almost positive that O’Cain was our coach in ’98…and Jamie Barnett was our QB.

We also beat Eric Moulds? and Miss State in the Peach bowl maybe 1992 or 1993?

I think this was the bowl game we broke out those awful uni’s too. IMO, those pants rivaled the unitards.

FYI, cow bells are loud as hell in an indoor stadium.

    ^ 1994

Miss. State in the Peach Bowl was 1994, IIRC.

It was the ’95 Peach Bowl (’94 season). We finished 2nd in the ACC at 8-3 regular season, losing to FSU, Louisville, and NC. That Peach Bowl was one of the most exciting State games I remember.

I remember before that game those cowbells never stopped (the SEC had banned them for all conference games, I believe they fell under the same ban as the no-rebel flags at Ole Miss); we were on the MARTA afterwards leaving the game and some State fan yelled “I don’t hear any cowbells now!!” and this little kid way in the back rang his once and everyone started laughing.

It was all downhill after that game.

Oh yeah, let’s hope we don’t have a repeat of that ’94 Louisville game, either. That was horrific.

Good to see you here Jimmy V! After you get back, say hello to my grandma for me, thanks.

The ’89 Copper Bowl was the culmination of an ugly year. I will have to rely on Mr Memory (aka Noah) to recollect the absolute specifics, but seemed that we started pretty strong, but lost virtually every game on the to finish 6-5 (6-6 after the bowl game) with virtually identical scripts, highlighted by interceptions (in every freakin’ game) run back for a TD by the bad guys. In the bowl game, against ground oriented Az, they could not do anything against us. Nothing. We absolutely dominated them, other than a fluke TD bomb that was absolutely on the money. That D, with Agnew, Debnam, Houston, etc, was one of, if not the most, dominating we’ve ever thrown out by the end of the year, and pretty much, all for naught.

By the way, I was in Atlanta for the previous Peach Bowl, and the cold was not as much of a problem as the constant rain. I was forced to leave by my uninterested group (it did appear that we were blowing them out at halftime) due to the weather, but to my total shock, the damn game wasn’t even shown on TV in Atlanta (pre-satellite days). A nasty New Year’s eve, regardless of the W.

    i remember that game well

“I will have to rely on Mr Memory (aka Noah) to recollect the absolute specifics, but seemed that we started pretty strong, but lost virtually every game on the to finish 6-5 (6-6 after the bowl game)”

You are largely correct, sir. We started out 6-0. Then we ran into Clemson and the purple jerseys and got killed 30-10. We bounced back the next week with a 20-10 win over South Carolina (this was the game where Todd Ellis blew out his knee). Then we lost four straight and finished 7-5.

We lost to UVa 20-9. I was at that game. We outplayed them, but they still won. We blocked one of their punts and they recovered it for a first down. It was that kind of day. I remember Herman Moore catching a TD pass and Joe Johnson was ALL OVER HIM. But Moore was 6-5 and Johnson was 5-9, so it wasn’t much of a contest. After the game, George Welsh admitted that he had no idea how his team won.

We lost to Dook the next week 35-26 in Durham. This was the game where Shane Montgomery set a conference record (which stands today) for most pass attempts in a game with something like 75. I think he threw for about 500 yards. But we couldn’t score in the red zone. The thing I remember about this game was Anthony Barbour breaking loose for what should have been a really long touchdown run. But he got walked down from behind by a Dook DB. It showed just how bad AB’s hamstrings were. He redshirted the next season to get healthy and I don’t think he ever lost a footrace after that.

We finished the regular season in disgusting fashion, losing a close one to a mediocre VPI team (that had lost to ECU that year) in Raleigh.

Then we played in the Copper Bowl in one of the most boring bowl games I ever saw.

  11. Trout 07/31/2007 at 5:15 PM #

^ My memory is the same as ncsslim’s – I do think we had a pick-6 in just about every game we lost that season, including the Copper Bowl game.

  12. noah 07/31/2007 at 5:18 PM #

I don’t think we had one in the UVA game. Shane Montgomery got knocked out with a concussion and Preston Poag was the QB, so we stuck with the option game mostly.

FYI, Copper Bowl is now the Insight Bowl

Noah i went to the Clemson game and then went to the South Carolina game the next week. That SC game was awesome. We had pretty good seats too. I forgot who the DB/SS/FS was for state that year, i guess i could look it up but I’m lazy right now, but there was a running play that STATE drug out where the running back isn’t going anywhere and the defense isn’t going anywhere, and the defensive back for STATE, picked the RB up for SC and body slammed him…I mean body slammed him like you see on pro-wrestling. I’ve never seen that. It was sick. That year i was like a Junior in high school i think, I had season tickets, i think they cost me about $115 if i remember correctly.

  15. chris92heel 07/31/2007 at 6:38 PM #

Noah, I remember that blocked punt that was advanced for a first down.

IIRC, it was UVA’s very good fullback (whose name escapes me) who recovered it.

“There also have been unexpected expenses. A ruptured water pipe at the Murphy Football Center last year caused $1.2 million in damage.”

Actually, yeah this figure sounds right. If a building burns to the ground at NC State, the University and state tax payers eat the cost. No insurance coverage (except liability).

Unless it happens within a warranty time (say 12 months) then the damage the broken main at the Murphy Center cost is all coming out of the budget. WTF with the shootins out of windows. Did Tank Tyler offend some thugs in one of his rap sonds, oh what?

I think we played ‘Zona before they were the “Desert Swarm” d…but obviously, they were pretty good that year.

Was that the Duke team ended up being conference champs – coached by Spurrier? I think they took one to the house against us in that game too.

If I remember correctly – I think part of the problem was that teams figured out our timing routes and Montgomery’s arm kind of left those things out there up in the air. So a lot of teams were just sitting on those passes.

I went to Columbia that year – and I’d have to say it was our high point that year. It was a huge revenge game because of Todd Ellis’ “gunplay” vs us the year earlier – not to mention one of their players flipping off the crowd. Out team played w/ incredible focus and anger that day…Ellis was removed from the equation early and we absolutely stomped them.

It’s hard to believe we ended up only being a 7-5 squad. My guess is that the UVa game and Montgomery’s concussion took a lot out of us.

Just got back from Reynolds after watching a scrimmage between a collection of Alumni vs. some of the current BBall team members. It was for the kids basketball camp that is going on there.

Coach Lowe and Strickland came in about the same time, and Sid was wearing dress shorts, shirt and a Wake Forest cap. Suppose they just came from Winston Salem for some observances of the late Skip Prosser.

Nothing crazy to tell. No show’s were Big Ben, Fergie, Lew, and Tracy Smith. GG, Degand, and BC did not lace em’ up. The only player Alumni player that I recognized by name was Eptimov.

JJ is nothing short of amazing. He does so much on the court with alot of agility. I didn’t watch for long, but besides some jaw dropping plays and dunks I was mostly keeping my eye on the two PG’s. They are both allright, but there is definitely going to be a biq question mark going into this season at this postion.

MJ looks like he wants to set smooth tempo and run set plays. He uses his size and court vision to make plays. Javy just tries to make plays, whether it’s pushing the ball up, sending lob passes, or playing a two man pick and roll. He is very comfortable with the ball in his hands in the middle of action and trying to make a play happen. They really are opposites. One thing that really stood out was that Javy had a quick release and overall shoots it well when he gets both feet beneath him. MJ’s had a really soft touch on his outside shot, but its much slower due to a little hitch is his tuck of the elbow under the ball.

vt, why so glum on the PG position? It may take a little time, but don’t forget that there are coaches who KNOW all about the position and who will bring out the best in these kids. Just takes time. Besides, there’s still another who didn’t play, Degand, to consider. Maybe he’s the ace in the hole?

  20. redfred2 07/31/2007 at 10:28 PM #

If Fergie was on campus and if he is planning on sticking around, I don’t understand why he wasn’t playing. If for nothing else than to get comfortable and some valuable playing (not just routine practice time) with his teammates. Also, you didn’t mention Fells?

I’m sitting on my hands until Friday’s announcement from Manning on the football front!

  22. RochesterRedWolf 08/01/2007 at 12:06 AM #

you guys heard anything about Mattes or Becton or Andrew Wallace. Man if we got 2 of those 3, woo hoo, i’m not even gonna talk about all 3. Crouch needs some help up there.

  23. packpigskinfan23 08/01/2007 at 1:00 AM #

I have seen Ferguson on campus many times… he seems to have a lot of classes right now, cause he is always in the library or getting something to eat and studying.

Fells and Grant seem to be really taking their studies seriously…

  24. packpigskinfan23 08/01/2007 at 1:12 AM #

^thats a lot more than I can say about some of our other “star” athletes.
