Tuesday Open Entry

Swamped at work right now. Wanted to open an entry for folks to focus on RELEVANT State issues that may be out there and share some links for other readers. Of course, Skip Prosser is still on everyone’s mind.

For some fun, we’ll share this 9 minute clip from YouTube reviewing the Wolfpack’s 1998 Peach Bowl win over Iowa. The Wolfpack knocked off the Big Ten’s Hawkeyes twice during Dick Sheridan’s tenure.

Interesting that Lee Fowler commented in today’s N&O that any football indoor practice facility was “way down the line” and in an article that outlined how the way facilities have evolved was far different than a grand plan envisioned many years ago.

State needs that indoor facility now, for both usage and for recruiting.

  2. BJD95 07/31/2007 at 11:08 AM #

Charles Davenport running the option. Brings back lots of memories. I was at that Peach Bowl, too. We sure knew how to blow or almost blow some big leads in that particular bowl, didn’t we?

  3. JimValvano 07/31/2007 at 11:21 AM #

How long after that interview did Sheridan quit?

  4. packbackr04 07/31/2007 at 11:32 AM #

“In terms of facilities, we can see the light at the end of the tunnel, and we’re pretty sure it’s not a train,” NCSU athletics director Lee Fowler said. ALWAYS A MAN OF MANY WORDS, TOO MANY WORDS… ” WERE PRETTY SURE ITS NOT A TRAIN”, WHAT KIND OF STATEMENT IS THAT FOR AN AD TO MAKE

Fowler said there still are plans for an indoor practice facility in the Carter-Finley vicinity available for football and other sports. But he said $8 million to $10 million must be donated before it can be built, noting the project probably ranks “way down the line.”

One snag, caused in large part by bad weather, has been the completion of the Derr Track/ soccer/softball complex south of Reynolds Coliseum. The track will be surfaced Aug. 15, Fowler said, which will force a few early soccer games in the 2007 season to be played at the Wolfpack’s Method Road Stadium.
JUST WANTED TO LINK THE ABOVE 2 PARAGRAPHS FOR THE LINK RAWFS WAS REFERENCING. NOTHING LIKE BLAMING THE WEATHER FOR THE PROBLEMS THEY ARE HAVING. EXCUSES EXCUSES EXCUSES…. HOW ABOUT SOME “HOW TO’S” INSTEAD OF TONS OF “WHY NOT’S” FROM OUR LEADER

“There also have been unexpected expenses. A ruptured water pipe at the Murphy Football Center last year caused $1.2 million in damage.”
IS HE SERIOUS, DOES HE EXPECT US TO BELIEVE THAT THE MURPHY CENTER WAS UNINSURED? THE INS COMPANY PAID FOR THE LOSS, ALL NCSU SHOULD HAVE BEEN RESPONSIBLE FOR SHOULD HAVE BEEN A DEDUCTIBLE. UNBELIEVABLE SIMPLY UNBELIEVABLE

SFN – the linke “NCS Coach Records” is not working.

JV — reference to Iowa andd Peach Bowl says 1998 Peach Bowl win over Iowa — must be a typo. Was 1989. Sheridan retired in 1992.

  6. RochesterRedWolf 07/31/2007 at 11:41 AM #

slight correction, this was the 1988 Peach Bowl. Man Jesse Campbell, Danny Peebles, Naz Worthen, Davenport. I was a freshman in High School back then. And to be honest I miss Sheridan. I see alot of TOB there, except I think TOB has a little more deadpan funny side to him.

We played in the Copper Bowl in 1989.

  8. Trout 07/31/2007 at 11:47 AM #

How many years did the Peach Bowl call itself the “New” Peach Bowl? They first started that in 1986, when NC State played Va Tech. I notice at the start of the Mizlou broadcast, it was still called the “New” Peach Bowl 2 years later in 1988.

  9. lush 07/31/2007 at 12:38 PM #

way to call him out packbacker. what do you think the ded. was. 2500? 1% of the coverage on the structure? put that one track mind to use.

  10. lush 07/31/2007 at 12:40 PM #

havent we played in more peach bowls than team?

  11. packpigskinfan23 07/31/2007 at 1:26 PM #

read somewhere last week that someone had shot a 12guage shotgun at the Murphy Center and caused “thousands” of dollars of damage to the windows and block S.

could Lee be trying to keep our facilities at a second tier so he can say he is constantly building them up?

  12. thebigwood 07/31/2007 at 1:34 PM #

Anybody know what’s up with Manning?

  13. McPete 07/31/2007 at 2:10 PM #

    packpigskinsfan:
it wasn’t a shotgun shell, Marcus Stone was in the shotgun formation trying to hit on a skinny post.

    On another subject—worth looking into

    http://community.foxsports.com/blogs/goodmanonfox

    Reports the following:
“One of the stories out in Las Vegas is the future of East Carolina coach Ricky Stokes.
While one source close to Stokes said that nothing is imminent, word continues to circulate that Stokes could be out as ECU’s head man as early as the end of this week.

If it happens, look for associate head coach Mack McCarthy, who has 16 years of head coaching experience at Chattanooga and VCU, to take over the Pirates program.”

Manning is set to announce at a press conference at his high school on Friday. He says it is between us, Clemson, and VT. Everyone still seems to think he’s leaning toward us, but until he comes out and says it, I’m guessing it’s still up in the air.

Anyone know anything about the 09 recruit DJ Richardson? Heard his stock is rising and he is listing the pack. Looks like we fell behind on Jordan Hamilton so just wondering if any new prospects has emerged for the 09 class yet.

I was at that Peach Bowl. I believe it was played on 1/1/89…so it followed the 1988 season, but was played during the ’89 calendar year.

Something I remember about that game…we got a big lead early thanks to a couple of kick return fumbles by an Iowa player. I had read a report in the paper that morning that his parents were attending the game and this was going to be the first time they had ever seen him play in college.

    Ouch.

Other things I remember…we were ranked in the top-20 (I don’t think they had expanded the polls to 25 yet) in both football and basketball at the same time. I’m not sure if that was the LAST time that happened or not, but it sure seemed like it.

It was cold. Seems like it was always brutally cold at the Peach Bowl. This one was particularly cold. Maybe a little freezing rain?

This game was also a warning of things to come. We got a big lead early (28-3) and had to hold on and barely win as the prevent defense reared it’s ugly head. Iowa had a good QB in Chuck Hartlieb, but they came up just a little short. They had the ball and were in a position to take the lead at the end, but we stopped them.

Of course, three years later, we’d end up blowing a 34-17 lead to ECU in just five minutes and 52 seconds in the fourth quarter thanks to both the prevent defense, horrible special teams play (a punt that went about 15 feet) and just bad, bad luck. One of my lasting images from that game was Buddy Green PLEADING with Sheridan to actually see what was happening in front of him.

Iowa had been ranked #1 at the start of the year by at least one poll. CNN, maybe? They had just come off Hayden Frye’s peak. In 1985, they won the Big 10, and in 1986 and 1987, they won nine and 10 games and went to the Holiday Bowl both years. They were coming off the Chuck Long era and had replaced him with Chuck Hartlieb. However, Hartlieb had torn up his knee and never really made it all the way back. Everyone thought he was going to be a strong NFL prospect, but he never really made it.

Iowa also had a TE who played forever in the NFL with the Patriots named Marv Cook and a good linebacker named Joe Mott.

It’s us or Clemson for Manning. VPI will not be a factor.

  19. kool k 07/31/2007 at 2:44 PM #

    Noah,
I was only 10, but I remember being at that game as well. It was the first time the guys parent’s saw him play and Hayden Fox…err..Hayden Frye yanked him out.

  20. BJD95 07/31/2007 at 2:58 PM #

IIRC, Sheridan’s last game with us was the blowout loss to UF in the foggiest Gator Bowl ever.

What year did we beat Brett Favre’s Southern Miss team? And was that the Copper, or the All-American Bowl?

  21. VaWolf82 07/31/2007 at 3:10 PM #

SFN – the linke “NCS Coach Records” is not working.

Which link are you referring to? Here’s one to an entry I did last year:

    http://www.statefansnation.com/index.php/archives/2006/08/06/ncsu-football-history-101/

  22. Mike 07/31/2007 at 3:11 PM #

All American bowl where be beat Favre. That would be 1990.

  23. VaWolf82 07/31/2007 at 3:15 PM #

Nearly anything you want to know about college football W/L records can be found at the College Football Data Warehouse. Here’s the NC State front page:

    http://www.cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/div_ia/acc/north_carolina_state/index.php

There are a number of interesting links on the left hand side of the page. One of those links takes you to a page that summarizes State’s bowl history.

12-28-1990, State beat Southern Miss in the All-American Bowl.

  24. VaWolf82 07/31/2007 at 3:16 PM #

Cut and paste the link until one of the admins can fix it.

  25. pakfanistan 07/31/2007 at 3:27 PM #

Cut and pasting won’t work. What breaks the link in this case is underscores. So where the link is broken and then italicized, put underscores around that. WordPress’s markup is retarded.
