Tim Stevens: Pack doing well with in-state prospects

N&O Preps reporter Tim Stevens notes the progress NC State is making in-state.

State has eight commitments, including six from in the state.

But the key to in-state recruiting isn’t just signing players. It’s signing the right players.

So far, State is hitting that mark, too. Five of its six in-state recruits are ranked among the top 30 North Carolina prospects by rivals.com.

Rick…yes this guy is for real.

If you had read all the posts between Noah and myself…as cheesy as that all sounds its actually pretty damn clever.

^yes it was clever, unfortunatly you lose points for having to explain it

Colorado should have been bumped from the voting just for being stupid enough to actually punt the ball to Ishmail. The only thing I remember about that game was yelling “I can’t believe it!” as I realized that CU was NOT punting the ball out of bounds. Idiots.

/\ Yeah I remember thinking the same thing when we kicked to Devin Hester a couple of years ago. But that ‘91 Orange bowl was a good call. Watch the following link and look right behind Rocket about :41 into the clip and a very close, but correctly called clip occurs. I hated that it was, now as much as then, but rocket might have been tripped up without it and it had to be called.

There is no arguing we are traditionally mediocre, unless it is to argue we are just disappointing. It certainly takes time to build a powerhouse and tradition obviously takes time, with no way around it. But if TOB has another 10 years like his tenure at BC, we will be close. Hell, if Louisville and friggin RUTGERS can be a play away from the BCS and Wake can get in, we can too.

We are in such a strong conference [sic] that Wake, our version of Vandy, won our league. If all the traditional SEC powers were down and replacing QB’s, guess what? Vandy is still not sniffing a title. There are only three maybe four national powers in the ACC, and they are all in rebuild mode. We are going to be a factor, the last few weeks of recruiting support the belief. In the ACC and possibly as soon as next year, and that will be at least acceptable to me.

I agree with Mike, 9-3 for ten straight years is a good problem for a school with our history to have. And if they can accomplish that, there will be slip up years where the bounces go our way and an undefeated or 1 loss season happens, along with the customary migration to warmer climes for a compelling bowl game. I also fear Noah is right in return, that if 10 straight 9-3 years should be the case and those bounces don’t go our way, we likely will be riding TOB out of town for not doing more just like BC did. It is the current climate of collegiate sports, and if the worst thing said about us as fans is that we think we are better than we really are, or we have unrealistic expectations (unlike Gator football or UNC basketball who just HAD to make a change), then so be it. We are in America, where people daily think they are better than they are and go out and prove it, regardless of class or breeding.

    *Lemme try that again.*

*That’s the final AP and coaches poll of 1990, after the bowl game.*
*This is the final UPI poll…*

from looking at those polls in the early 90s, 2 things stand out.

In ’90 4 future ACC schools were in the top 10, and 5 were in the coaches top 15. Wow.

In ’92, State, Carolina, and Wake were all ranked in the final top 25 poll (AP and coaches). When is the last time that happened, if ever? I had not remembered that, and honestly wouldn’t have believed it true if told.

The comment about the 10 straight 9-3 seasons may be the case, but I’ll go on record now as not being in the “lunatic fringe” calling for his dismissal, as long as we’re also beating our key rivals. 90 wins and 30 losses is awfully strong and I certainly wouldn’t call that mediocre at all!

Granted, the expectations seem to get raised when you get those 9-3 seasons, but I’d like to have to worry about that when it happens.

Jimmy V—I need to take you to lunch so you could fill me in on some of those “behind the scenes” stories. I used to have a “pipeline to the inside” a number of years ago, but he’s died. I had moved to SC when Jimmy V was at his peak and never did fully understand everything that was going on except for hearsay and Gollenback’s book.

Noah…No hard feelings man…I’d much rather be at odds with a Tarhole than a fellow Wolfpacker. We just have varying opinions on what expectations SHOULD be.

Noah, must not get enough “exercise in arguing with his wife”! LOL!

Noah – I know you and others hope for the best. I also am fairly up to date to on our history – especially our recent history.

I’m not sure what you’re greater point is – a) that we should expect continued mediocrity because it has by and large defined us or b) that TOB is one of the best hires we’ve had and we should be happy if he does at State, what he did at BC.

While we may have a mediocre history, I do think that we’re poised to take a step up.

I think your comments on the fans are offbase. I personally believe that almost every fan who purchases a ticket and walks into Carter Finley stadium is doing a little bit to help build NC State’s football program.

The truth is that the recent increased interest, attendance and intensity surrounding our football program are part of what drew TOB to the program. If we’d had real nice facilities, but BC-like attendance, I don’t think he would have been intrigued by the opening.

Football giants rise from obscurity all the time. Kansas State, Colorado, Virginia Tech, Washington, and Louisville all had somewhat unimpressive history. It doesn’t mean that it will happen for us, it just means that it can. I don’t think people are foolish for hoping or even expecting TOB to lead us to an ACC title and a New Years day bowl.

^ I suspect that Noah could care less about optimism, in general. However, he seems rightly cautious about the expectations that can flow from an unopposed optimistic outlook.

Put simply, there is every reason to believe that, relative to NC State’s actual history, TOB will be quite successful at NC State. However, if frequent conference titles and NC opportunities are the standards put forward by the fans, as they probably would be at Florida, Texas or Southern Cal, then TOB could be the best that NC State has ever had and still come up very short of fan goals. In that case, do we use our rampantly optimistic standards as a way to push out an historically successful coach or do we temper our dreams for the sake of a maintaining a very solid reality?

Noah’s just trying to keep some perspective as TOB gets started. By any measure, TOB is far more likely to turn us into a perennial upper division finisher than to put us consistently above FSU, VT and Miami within our own conference. We absolutely ASPIRE to that level but to EXPECT it of TOB is at long odds versus the math that is modern D1 football.

“that TOB is one of the best hires we’ve had and we should be happy if he does at State, what he did at BC.”

    That, indeed, was my point.

  12. choppack1 07/04/2007 at 7:15 PM #

I think that’s reasonable. I’ll be thrilled if he can do what he did there. It would be like Sheridan all over again.

  13. highstick 07/04/2007 at 7:29 PM #

Haze, I totally agree and think “the rightly cautious expectations” should be correct. Frankly I get a little tired of our Clempson, South Carolina(Holtz and Spurrier eras, Chapel Hole, and Duke fans always starting off the year with those “givens” whether it is basketball or football. Granted Carolina and Duke have more of a legit right to expect that from a basketball standpoint, but it’s not realistic to think it’s going to happen on a consistent basis. Nobody has done that since John Wooden, and I dare say, never will again!

Am I wrong or has anyone really disagreed with Noah? He’s made some very good points, not withstanding the issue about season ticket holders which I can’t really even address. But I do think his potential given all of those other components, i.e. fan support, facilities, etc. is higher than at BC!

I completely agree with one of those posts that came before this one. I just can’t remember which one it was…

  15. highstick 07/04/2007 at 10:37 PM #

Confusing, ain’t it??? I’m just glad we’re arguing over “split hairs” than real issues! That’s a change, isn’t it?
