Schedule Stuff

On the heels of this great entry regarding strength of football schedules in the 2007 season…

…850TheBuzz gives us their annual ACC Helmet Schedule. I downloaded one and printed it off this morning.

If you have ESPN INsider then you can view Bruce Feldman’s look at the ten toughest non-conference schedules in the country.

While we are on the topic:

Football – it has been announced that NC State will host Gardner-Webb in Carter-Finley in 2009. We have updated our perpetual ‘Out of conference football schedule entry’ for your viewing pleasure.

Basketball– Similarly our 2007 Basketball Schedule Entry – most recently having added Presbyterian College – can be seen by clicking here.

The UMass game was a joke.

The UConn was scary…I missed that one, but we were in big trouble in that one. We were tied w/ them and they had the ball and were driving. At the very least we were going to OT.

Interesting stuff on the b’ball front. I love how Sidney and TOB are reaching out to all of our players.

Noah, I think you forgot to list the game @ Texas when the ‘Pack stuck it to Brown one last time.

  3. BoKnowsNCS71 07/13/2007 at 9:58 PM #

It was U-Conn. Thanks for correcting. Not sure who brought up WCU. Don’t see that.

Hopefully, the G-W date will be a first game situation. Other than that, a sure rout (which G-W most certainly will be by ’09) is neither helpful for the team nor an overly enjoyable date on the schedule after that first weekend. I’m not talking about just a sure win, I’m talking about basically a team scrimmage, subsidized by the season ticket holders. I didn’t enjoy them in bball, and I don’t enjoy them in fball. Too many good D1AA’s in the area to subject your fan base to a bad one.

nccslim – I’m kind of with you on this. I’ve gone to a few laughers in my time – and I just don’t see how it benefits the team when there is very little resistance.

I do understand the economics of it…and you also need a couple of games you know you are going to win. However, I just don’t know how fun it is for any of the parties involved -the players for both teams or the fans.

With Hart becoming available from FSU, this would be a great time to get rid of Foulup!

  7. noah 07/14/2007 at 1:11 PM #

Maybe none of the tougher I-AA squads were available.

I’m still not sure why it’s a big deal (not saying it isn’t…just I haven’t seen a compelling reason why it is). Playing a good I-AA team…playing a bad I-AA team…it’s not like either one is going to give you any credibility in the minds of people outside the program.

Clemson plays Wofford fairly regularly, don’t they? It’s a tune-up game. It’s a chance to see the third-string guys. Hopefully, no one gets hurt and you get to see your team run up and down the field all day long.

I disagree that you don’t get *anything* out of it. It’s better than a live drill. The passes that the DBs are defending are being thrown harder than the coaches throw them. The OL and DL are putting up more resistance than the blocking sleds. Plus, the guys who don’t normally get into a game get a few live reps against someone other than the scout squad.

You can always sell your ticket. I’m sure there are plenty of State fans (or Gardner Webb fans) who aren’t able to get season tickets who would like to see a game.

“You can always sell your ticket. I’m sure there are plenty of State fans (or Gardner Webb fans) who aren’t able to get season tickets who would like to see a game.”

No, I guess I will just give them to my sons (who always accompany me regardless) and their girlfriends (who don’t). Again, there may have not been a better D1AA (App, GaS, whoever… which in my mind are games I can look forward to), but as said previously, these guys probably look at G-W as gimmes. I hope there were other considerations that fell through.

Argue all you will, but I still hope the game is the first game of the year and all is solved.

  9. noah 07/14/2007 at 9:59 PM #

Claiming that Gardner Webb is a horrible game, but a game against I-AA Georgia Southern is something to look forward to…that seems like the narrowest of hair-splitting.

It’s not the G-W game that bothers me, it’s the G-W and Ohio University in ’09. Just like the Wofford game this year is made pathetic by the presence of ECU on the schedule.

  11. ncsslim 07/15/2007 at 9:13 AM #

Well, one is a team that is at least competitive at their respective level, where the other seems to be on the outside looking in. 2006 comparitive results include that perenial powehouse Coastal Carolina (GaS won 36-21 in Statesboro, where G-W lost 52-24 in Boiling Springs), AppSt (GaS lost 20-27 in 2OT in Statesboro, and G-W lost 41-6 in Boiling Springs), and one that’s a little confusing, both lost to Wofford at home by 28-10, and 34-17, respectively (fear the Terriers?). I’m not implying that I would circle the GaS date on the calendar as the schedule is released, only that playing a team that is least competitive on the 1AA national level is preferred, if you feel the need to play that level of team (which I’m NOT taking issue with).

By the way, the game is already scheduled for Sept 19, so obviously not a first game, and, my father was a G-W grad (JC days), so I’m neither oblivious to the school or it’s campus, but I was surprised to find them on our schedule.

    Over and out.

  12. packpigskinfan23 07/15/2007 at 12:53 PM #

vtpackfan- in ’09 ECU could very well be a top 25 team, or at least a dominate team in their confrence.

I know a lot of you dont agree, but its true. Get over it.

  13. jwrenn29 07/15/2007 at 4:30 PM #

Is it just me, or is the first half of the season our toughest stretch? That could fare well for us to have momentum going into bowl contention in the end of the season.

  14. pack80 07/16/2007 at 8:13 AM #

This just in. Fowler agrees to have the Pack head down to Buies Creek to help the Camels kick off their return to football. In return they get to play in Raleigh for 5 straight!!

    Not really of course but……

  15. WolftownVA81 07/16/2007 at 9:26 AM #

A little off topic but UVA just started taking ticket orders for away games this morning. I bought two tix for the game in Raleigh a few moments ago for. The price was $44 each plus a $2 sevice fee plus a $5 total order fee. If you haven’t gotten your tix, this is a good way to get them. The number is 1-800-UVA1. Go Pack!

Rumor has it we play Hogwarts in 2010. However, their best player will have either graduated or passed on by them. They are not big but I’ve head their plays are simlar to Boise State’s — magical.

Man, I hate the Summer Doldrums. Football can’t get here fast enough.

No, MLB doesn’t cut it for me.

I dont understand this comment. In ’09, our OOC schedule is G-W, South Carolina, Pitt and ECU.

We will have 8 home games in ’09. That will certainly help pay some bills.

  20. noah 07/16/2007 at 3:10 PM #

We should be hearing some good news soon on the football front. Hopefully, two pieces of good news.

this is the first summer doldrums we have had around ncsu boards. For the last # of years the bball coach situation has warranted endless topics. I have enjoyed the time off.

  24. old13 07/16/2007 at 6:48 PM #

IMO if Oblinger, Stafford and Foulup remain at NCSU, Wolfpack athletics will remain second drawer at best with occasional pushes into top 25 territory, but no more. All they understand is $$ and then it’s only IMMEDIATE $$ without any long-range foresight. (Maybe the only way to be noticed is to withhold funds en masse!)

For the last # of years the bball coach situation has warranted endless THREADS ON THE SAME SUBJECT

    There. Fixed that for you.
