How About State vs Notre Dame in FL? (Update 7/21)

It seemed like wonderful timing to throw this out after yesterday’s discussion about the ACC potentially making a move for a bowl game in Tampa and in light of what seems to be Lee Fowler’s perpetual desire to appease Terry Holland and schedule useless games with East Carolina.

While we are talking about playing football in the great State of Florida, take a look at this announcement yesterday:

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Notre Dame will play football games at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Fla., in 2011 and 2014.

No opponent has been announced for the games.

Notre Dame previously announced it planned to schedule a football game each season at neutral sites starting in 2009. It is an attempt to return the school to its independent roots.

Athletic director Kevin White has said the goal is to travel to different parts of the country and ensure that the school remains a nationwide program.

Wasn’t NC State scheduled to play a home and home vs Notre Dame at the end of this decade that was frustratingly removed from our schedule when it was announced the Irish felt that they were playing too many ACC teams AND we learned that the ACC office was doing the job of NC State’s adminstration by taking the lead in scheduling the Wolfpack’s series with Notre Dame?

Isn’t there some recent history of State and Notre Dame matching up in Florida to produce one of the best wins of NC State’s football history? (28-6)

Why NOT pursue filling one of Notre Dame’s spots in the Citrus Bowl?

With that said, take a look at this announcement from Saturday morning that the Irish will be playing Washington State in San Antonio, TX on Halloween, 2009.

Just a thought…but, NC State feels very much like a “Washington State”-type of opponent, do we not?

Great idea. Would certainly give us some much needed national attention.

It would be awesome and a good reason to head down to the sunshine state. Whether David Horning would see enough money in the game to bother with it is another story.

I’d personally love it if this happened. As I live in the area a short drive down to the citrus bowl (even though its a dump) would be nice.

A question to consider though: If wolfpack fans traveled in decent #s to this game, would they be less likely to travel to a low/mid-tier bowl game at the end of the same season? I’d hate for our Bowl travel rep to be impacted.

This would be nice, but I would prefer the home and home if possible. The South Bend trip has been on my to do list for a while.

I think it would be great and if so, use it to develop a “home and home” rivalry. We’ve got to get these GW’s and other Div II-a games off the schedule if there’s ever any hope of developing a respectable national football program.

Did TOB work toward getting Notre Dame on BC’s schedule, or is there a longer tradition between these teams? maybe TOB has a relationship with notre dame that could lead to future scheduling.

We already did that one. Hopefully TOB gets ACC title so any Notre Dame game is in the BCS.

Slightly longer history between those teams. They first played in ’75, sporadically until ’93, when the rivalry started in earnest.

^^ Yeah – we can’t squeeze Notre Dame in between all the ECU games. Not room for both, and ECU is evidently a prerequisite.

They are two predominately Catholic schools with lots of Irish blood. All we got is an Irish coach to attract them. They’d rather play UNC.

GReat idea, but this is just beyond the IQ level of our current AD. Remeber we don’t have 90,000 seat stadium and don’t have alot of resources so we will probaly schedule GW again or maber Lenior Rhyne.

I loved going to the Gator Bowl, and that would give me another reason to see Florida again.
